I truly enjoyed this essay. Regardless of if you agree with it all or not, you will come away with new ways to think about the subjects. I really appreciate the effort that went into this.
We conducted cyber evaluations of Anthropic’s Claude Mythos Preview and found continued improvement in capture-the-flag (CTF) challenges and significant improvement on multi-step cyber-attack simulations. *edit - This is the headline from article, not associated with the review.

I've always thought profit sharing was more fair overall than shares/options for most employees. I'm really glad to hear that this happens at relatively larger companies too.
Re:Ask HN: Show me your half baked project on Saturday January 09, 2021 @06:07PM (#25706033)
I've been working on https://dedolist.com/ on and off since summer. I wanted a one stop place to find and be able to use open data from around the web. I even have an open API (no authentication required currently) for each data source. I have basically done no marketing at all for it. Mostly just wanted an excuse to play with some new technologies (Netlify and Eleventy in this case).

Not sure how much I want to continue adding data sources or supporting it, but it doesn't really cost me much keeping it online currently.

Re:Songcraft Beta – A songwriting tool and guitar tab builder on Tuesday December 11, 2018 @01:31PM (#18657519)
This is really great! I used to work at another music startup where we did something similar. I've been using OnSong (mobile app) to organize my songs for live performances, but I love that this is focused on creation. Excited to try it out.
This is really impressive. Too good to be free in my opinion.

Check the helpers, the main app is low, but it's likely over 1GB of RAM in use with the helpers.
I second that, I have discovered more new artists, and new releases through Rdio than anywhere else. Hopefully their competition does better with discovery in the future.

None of the scroll animations work in Firefox either. Not just touch based devices. Didn't leave a very good impression on me.
Re:When Google Decides To Delete Your App on Thursday April 10, 2014 @04:05PM (#7569323)
I get why Google suspended the app. That was excessive use of the keywords. What I don't get is why this seems to be an absolute suspension with no recourse. It would make a lot more sense if Google gave them a chance to change the listing to comply with their terms then reinstate the app when it did. Better for the developers and better for the users.

Ok so this system works by tracking MAC addresses. I assume the same sort of system using cameras and facial recognition would work too, and you can't turn off your face. I assume this must be already happening somewhere.

The amount of privacy we think we have must be a small fraction of what we actually have.

Re:Two thousand mice dropped on Guam by parachute to kill snakes on Tuesday December 03, 2013 @02:15PM (#6842404)
They definitely get accustomed, she is quite predictable in her time table and eating habits. It took a good couple months before she finally ate her first mouse. The brown tree snake in Guam appears to be quite the survivor and doesn't appear to be as picky. Still, from the little I do understand about snakes, the temperature of the food seems to play a major factor for them. That's where I'm most concerned about this plan failing.
Re:Two thousand mice dropped on Guam by parachute to kill snakes on Tuesday December 03, 2013 @01:04PM (#6841937)
I'm not sure they thought this through completely. As a person who owns a snake, I can tell you that convincing a snake to eat an already dead mouse, when they are not used to it, is not easy. They prefer live and warm prey. I'd be very surprised if this actually works with any amount of efficiency. Perhaps the brown tree snake is different than typical captive snakes, but in my opinion it would be only be more difficult to convince a wild snake to eat an already dead mouse.

I know the useless tunnel that counseling can be all too well. I also know my son. He is not like the rest of the kids. Exceptionally bright, exceptionally short fuse. No energy, always tired and constant sleepwalking or night terrors, and I do believe he may have already had auditory hallucinations. There is a history of mental illness in his lineage.

That being said, I have seen the kids first hand pushing his buttons on the school yard. There are so easy to push it's hard for them to resist. We are working with both the school and some mental health workers to make the situation more livable for all parties. I appreciate your concern, and I do understand that play-yard aggression is often mis-construed. That is most definitely part of this situation.

Tragedy yes, though I do believe that if it was caught earlier and appropriate help was provided while the child was younger. The tragic outcome may have been avoided. There are a lot of people who live with Schizophrenia and live 'relatively' productive lives. I believe he could have been one too.
What a timely article. Just today received a call from the school that my grade 3 son had thrown a girl to the ground threatening her. This was the second incident in a week. A team of councilors and mental health workers were called in as an emergency response team.

The similarities between the child in the article and my son are startling and scary.

Although we are still at the beginning of our story, I do believe that in my area in Canada, the system has gotten better. I can only hope that this continues and the system does not let him down like it did to the child in the article.

My son will be seeing a counselor and accessing services that were previously unavailable to us starting in 2 days. Thanks Hacker News, you are always so poignant.

Re:Moving PhoneGap to the Apache Software Foundation on Wednesday September 28, 2011 @03:08PM (#3049403)
I think this will be generally great for the PhoneGap community, but I can't say I like the name Apache Device Bridge. There has got to be something better than that. Off the top of my head, how about "Apache Web Bridge"?

I think Arq (http://www.haystacksoftware.com/arq/) seems like a particularly useful program. Wasn't aware of it before. I like how they give you control over your backup storage.
