Re:I Switched to Brave Browser on Monday September 28, 2026 @03:01PM (#49882824)
Like?

Edge, chrome, chromium, brave, vivaldi, opera... its all just rebadged chromium.

There's chrome, Firefox, safari.

Re:I Switched to Brave Browser on Monday September 28, 2026 @02:58PM (#49882786)
Unfortunately, by switching to YACB, the user is effectively making Firefox less relevant.

So if you want it to be relevant, you actually do have to use it. Otherwise you can just as well give up and not care at all about the browser monopoly.

Re:Israel Destroys Villages in Lebanon on Sunday April 12, 2026 @06:26AM (#47738078)
Not sure what country you are referring to, Iran? USA? Israel? Libanon?
I have a coworker who is obsessed by LLMs and keeps reiterating that he is super productive with them.

Yet I have to still see the first delivery or codebase by that same person. (I am not his manager)

I lean in the LLM skeptic camp, I know they're great for some things (never to outsource your thinking, what unfortunately a lot of people do), but I'd like to see some studies. Because there are a lot of net negatives in the business press, or max up to 10% improvement.

Re:Why is your open source project still hosted on GitHub? on Saturday September 20, 2025 @02:08PM (#45315764)
The company i work for is adopting github in lieu of a solution hosted in our datacenters.

We've had more downtime with github than without. So I'd take the "reliable" with a grain of salt.

Oh, you mean, standing up against full monopolies?

> Our users (including top founders and VCs) usually trust us with the AI features because it saves time and thinking.

I like to think myself, not have AI do it for me ;)

At that point calling it end-to-end encrypted is not true.
Before I would even consider something like this:

* Where's your privacy policy?

* What/how are you handling the different customer protection laws? What juristictions are you working in? Where's the data hosted?

* Where's the design description?

* What encryption are you actually using? If you rolled your own, then well.. good luck.

* How could you ensure end-to-end encryption over multiple protocols, without either completely reverse engineering said protocols? If your answer here would be that you're using a central server where messages get passed between services (and thus decrypted), it isn't end-to-end.

The site is also very flaky. Sometimes it loads, sometimes it doesn't. There are so many questions, and zero answers.

We (partner and I) average between 700 and 900 searches a month. Kagi has been so worth it.
Re:Apple 'broke law' by pushing out labor-organizing dev on Tuesday November 05, 2024 @01:59PM (#42054245)
I do find it hilarious how little traction this story gets, but if it would be the identical story about Google, meta, x, ... it'd probably blow up.
This week, packages from repo.saltproject.io will be migrated to packages.broadcom.com. This means a variety of disruptive changes are being implemented around installing, upgrading, and pinning/locking Salt.

I did this, once, on a 386. Did I learn things? Definitely. Will I ever do it again? Definitely not ;)

Apple has a contract with their developers that probably prohibits just rolling back to an old version. As long as the app works, does not violate the AppStore terms and is intended as per the developer, who is Apple to say what they do with it?

I'm not saying that this is should not be handled, but .. I don't see many good outcomes here.

Every time I switch off my bluetooth Plantronics headset Apple music starts. Why? Because Apple.

Another clear sign Apple doesn't really care about it's users, it really cares about the bottom line, and getting people to sign up for their services.

As a musician, this is... revolting.
Re:Multiple Displays on a Mac Sucks on Friday April 26, 2024 @10:00AM (#40169503)
I've experienced many of these things on a regular basis, on my work supplied MB Pro (M1 and Intel)

* multiscreen: I use my macbook, a widescreen, and a 24" in portrait mode. Window management /sucks/ on mac. It either doesn't remember where apps go (even just between sleep), it loses track of them, and the fact that you can just partly drag a window onto a separate screen can cause it to "vanish" until you finally figure out it's that tiny edge

* full screen - you fullscreen one app, and macos decides that the other two monitors should go black. eh, no?

* MST. Please. For fcks sake.

Plugging in two distinct monitors at the same time made my Intel macs (plural) freak out. Screen 1 would activate, screen two, one would go off, two would blink, etc.

* I don't want the dock to move all around. So I disabled that. But then, the menubar is also stuck on just the main screen.... WHY!?

* non-existant window-management. Rectangle solves a lot, but really?

I've got more gripes with this thing... probably mostly to do because I want to use accessories which aren't blessed by Apple. Like my Poly Voyager 2 headset. Every time I switch that thing on or off, apple music starts up. Why? Because Apple. Nowhere to switch that off, so I'm using the NoTunez app to immediately kill Apple Music again if it starts.

The constant mixed use of home-end-pageup-pagedown (most apps it acts properly - you know, like every other os handles it, and some apple specific apps suddenly end is "end of document" instead of the end of the line.

The list goes on. I guess if you're deeply embedded in the apple ecosystem with their gear, it works, but once you go outside of that, it's .. shite.

Lenovo thinkpad t14s AMD, gen 3.

Everything on it just works.

Re:iOS 17.4 Nerfs Web Apps in the EU on Saturday February 10, 2024 @06:47AM (#39325482)
They knew the DMA was coming for years. For a company with the resources like Apple to not have enough time is just a load of crap.

They don't want to, and will go out of their way to make their statement.

Re:The Ozempic Plateau on Monday January 22, 2024 @02:15PM (#39093992)
It matters.

Keeping people on this medication for life seems like a really bad thing - atleast until we clearly know what the long term effects are. Those are unknown.

The other medication you mention is known, studied, affordable. Comparing insulin to Ozempic is .. well, a non-comparison in my book.

Generally speaking - definitely for something that you can treat with a life style change and some inconvenience in the beginning - a life where you can live without a drug is better than one where you keep being dependent on it.

Unless you're the pharma industry, that is.

Re:The Ozempic Plateau on Sunday January 21, 2024 @02:53PM (#39082320)
Honestly - I'm not sure if people actually realise what they eat is bad for them. And this I mean in the sense that the food industry goes out of its way to make sure food is addictive.
Re:The Ozempic Plateau on Sunday January 21, 2024 @02:48PM (#39082245)
And when you stop taking it you go back to your old weight. Win for everyone except for the person using Ozempic.
Re:The Ozempic Plateau on Sunday January 21, 2024 @02:33PM (#39082061)
It's something called free will about what you choose to consume.
Re:The Ozempic Plateau on Sunday January 21, 2024 @02:27PM (#39081986)
Does this even work in the long run? When you stop using this drug, and you have not adjusted the way you eat/live... don't you just yoyo back up? I'd think so.

Having been morbidly obese, i can say that being told to lose weight doesnt work.

You have to want it, be dedicated to it, and have the mental support.

For me it was exercise and changing your food patterns: more small things to keep you full longer. Not denying yourself anything, but everything - and i mean everything- was weighted, added to a calorie tracking app. Your max is your max. Want crisps? Sure, but that comes out of your food budget.

It requires dedication that i find a lot of people are just not willing to put into it, and hence... the popularity of a drug like Ozempic.

I've lost 70kg (154lbs) and it is nearly a decade in still a struggle, having been obese for 20ish years. But the health benefits alone make it worth it.

Courtesy of the apple marketing team.
I guess they'd care if they could monetize it.
