I don't think it's weird at all to withhold judgement before experiencing something yourself. It is pretty much impossible to know with certainty how you will feel about some things without experiencing them.

> Today, AI can generate lightweight, standalone, accessible HTML with just the CSS it needs, so a Minimal CSS Framework for Semantic HTML matters less than it used to

This argument is basically saying, "Why build anything if AI can do something similar?" Personally, I think there is a great deal of value in building things to a well thought out specification. I don't like this attitude of cognitive surrender.

bro what?
I'm not sure what point you're even making. It has never been easier to access markets. It seems like the core problem is that most Americans don't have/save enough money to get rich from buying them, nor is there specifically any mandated formal education that gives any guidance on investing. I also know plenty of people from my small town America hometown that save their money in regular cash savings accounts, despite them having internet and easy access to put money in a brokerage account with their bank and buy equities.

Similar feelings about the Duo. Very little innovation beyond what is offered by Androids. In fact, I feel like there are many foldable Android phones that offer better hardware (Motorola Razr Fold comes to mind). I say this as someone who is a huge Apple Fanboy and got a Duo on release day.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:22PM (#50278534)
As far as I can tell after just looking at the specs, what I said is still the same. For example, an Intel Core Ultra 5 Processor 338H has a TDP of 25-65W vs. the M5 TDP of 3-27W. These aren't even directly comparable, but it gets worse going higher in the Intel Stack.

Further, every Windows laptop seems to have a worse display. For example, an M5 Macbook Pro 14" has a 120Hz 254ppi mini-LED display with a peak brightness of 1600 nits vs. a Dell XPS 14" with a 120Hz 161ppi LCD display with a peak brightness of 500 nits.

So it seems like they have figured out that they can put bigger batteries, worse displays, and throttle TDP to get better battery life, but it is still not possible for them to beat Apple's efficiency just based on those TDP numbers alone—these chips are just drawing more than 2x the power at peak load.

I don't understand why there isn't more effort towards ARM in the Windows world.

Because it's not semantic search, it's text search. You don't search Discord like you search Google, which is a problem when it is used as a wiki replacement.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @06:20PM (#50266668)
last time I checked, every Windows laptop had the absolutely massive caveat that it needed to throttle performance by a ton to have a low enough TDP to compete on battery life. You just cannot match the efficiency of ARM Apple chips with an x86 chip.

That's exactly how my Mexican friend says it, and he's about as liberal as they come

Apple is happy to sell you an AppleCare One plan for $19.99 a month to soften the blow
beautifully stated
Imagine a regulatory framework so weak that a company feels comfortable to do something this anti-competitive
As of a few years ago when I left, this was completely solved by the data catalog. The columns are typed and require identification.
I don't see how you can possibly consider scuba to be bottom-tier. I have used nothing even remotely close to scuba at any other company. For example, Amazon Athena is a joke compared to it.

Your example seems like it would be a great system to have access to, but it seems like that question would be formed after using a more general system like Scuba where you can iterate on the data rapidly.

There are many valid reasons people still buy consoles. It's cheaper than a gaming PC, easier to use, has optimization for games, and consoles usually have many exclusives. I have both and I still prefer my PS5 over my PC.

Re:Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab on Sunday October 25, 2026 @07:11PM (#50236972)
At its core, Meta uses a modified version of mercurial. Most of the cool stuff I was referring to is not related to the core "hg" operations but related to the server-side hosting (monanoke) and the platform for operations like code review (diffusion), CI/CD (sandcastle), and all kinds of other tooling (notable mention: interactive smartlog for its fantastic GUI). I see no functional reason why a company like GitHub could not make the "Hub" part of GitHub better. It seems like they basically just haven't because they don't want to.
Re:Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab on Saturday October 24, 2026 @05:52PM (#50225735)
It is so mid compared to the source control ecosystem I was exposed to at Meta. It really opened my eyes to how little innovation there has been in the public space and around git pretty much since its inception.
Re:Plex laid off the whole player team on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @06:19PM (#50188460)
There are not any alternatives that match every feature. The account system and number of platforms with a Plex app is unmatched. This matters when you share it with others who won't want to tinker with anything.

No non-technical user in their right mind will be trying to vibecode an OS and flashing it to some random off-brand tablet anytime soon.

And yet, nearly all of enterprise money spent on AI tokens in the US is going to either OpenAI or Anthropic.
One of the world’s great mysteries is how Apple cannot figure out basic search features working consistently
Thanks I hate it
Maybe just quit assuming everyone is clever and just clearly state what, specifically, you are referring to.
Re:Where is all the new, good software? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @05:07AM (#50068778)
I have never once worked on a SaaS product where it felt like there wasn’t an infinite universe of things to build, simplify, improve, or change.
I haven’t had this happen yet, but I was just thinking about this last night. I would be very interested to see if exercising TDD, as difficult as that practice is to actually do, would have a meaningful positive impact on improving this phenomenon. Usually agents model what most humans do, writing tests to pass and assert that the code you just wrote works as you wrote it.
I’ve had this experience as well where it is finding all kinds of subtle bugs. The trouble is when it lulls you into checking its work a little less carefully and you let some of its bugs slip through as well. Definitely had a few of those happen to me at work.
