In regards to #2: Does the company have to provide you with its last valuation? Can they force you to provide your own third party company valuation?

A few weeks back I asked Scott Gu if there were any plans for Visual Studio on OSX/Linux and the answer was no. He mentioned they're focusing on Visual Studio Online, though I don't know if that means some sort of online IDE.
Re:New generic top-level domains on Monday April 21, 2014 @09:24PM (#7625188)
Is that $185,000 per evaluation for a gTLD? Are there other costs involved?
That's an mazing story. He starts to talk about their supplies being stolen around 45:00 but it's worth it to watch the entire video.
Re:Red Bull Stratos Skydive Rescheduled for today on Sunday October 14, 2012 @02:46PM (#4652181)
Unfortunately I barely missed the live jump. Will a recorded video be posted, or is there one already available?
Re:Python/Visual Studio 1.5RC out: Mac/Linux client libs for Azure on Wednesday September 19, 2012 @01:07PM (#4544415)
Out of curiosity is there anything like this for Ruby?
Can you create subscriptions with Stripe on the fly? My wife runs a subscription business but pricing is based on the products the person chooses so my subscription rate is always variable. When I first looked at Stripe it seemed like I had to have subscription + prices created beforehand.
I wonder how a progsysadmin would compare to the desingineer. I'd imagine it's easier to find a progsysadmin just from my own experience. I've had a few jobs where I was responsible for both the programming and system administration, in small companies of course.
Re: Review My First iPhone Game on Monday October 24, 2011 @12:31PM (#3150306)
Congrats! How did you manage the graphics? Was it outsourced, did you hire someone? Can you give any details? I've built a few apps but I'm always lacking on the design side.
A friend of mine owns a small trucking business and was bidding on a contract for freight services for a university. Upon winning the bid they notified him that he had to get BBB accreditation in order to be awarded the contract.
Re:Find apartments by commute times on Sunday October 02, 2011 @02:57AM (#3062262)
A great idea. I would even be curious to see a heatmap of job availability in my area and then get travel time as I looked through them.

Is Amazon Simple Email Services an option?
Re:How to Rock an Algorithms Interview on Monday September 26, 2011 @04:05PM (#3040520)
I've been doing this exact same thing to learn. I read an interview question that asked how to sort a linked list. I tried implementing it on my own. Later I looked online to see other implementations and compared with my version. I was a little bummed to see my solution wasn't ideal but it only made me dig deeper.

Later on I found some Stanford lectures, particularly Programming Abstractions by Julie Zelenski (around lecture 14). After watching that lecture I was able to classify my linked list sorting attempt as a selection sort. I was pretty excited that I wrote a selection sort without even knowing what kind of sorting I was doing. I have yet to use my newly acquired knowledge at work but I'm now confident I can spot certain sorting algorithms and I'm much more aware of when to use each.

If anyone is aware of any other resources like books, online tutorials or videos I would love to hear about them!

Re:Stanford Offers 13 classes, including AI, for free on Tuesday August 16, 2011 @08:35PM (#2893489)
iTunes has iTunes University where a lot of educational videos can be found. If I'm not mistaken you can find the same videos on YouTube at Stanford's YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/StanfordUniversity
Re:Ask HN: Job searches don't have to suck, do they? on Tuesday August 02, 2011 @08:24PM (#2839268)
1. Location (I currently commute at least 2 hours a day) 2. Pay and Benefits (Married, 2 kids, house) 3. Work environment / culture (Hardest part to determine*) 4. Perks (Coffee, gym, flexibility, etc) 5. Everything else

I feel that understanding the problem space comes lower in the list of factors for me. I might be more inclined to work in a tech focused company but if factors 1-4 above are met at a company that works in agriculture... well then give me a straw hat, some overalls and I'm in.

The one thing that sucks for me is gauging the company culture. Phone or face-to-face interviews just don't cut it. And unless you know someone who works at the place it's difficult to get a good idea of what the place is really like to work at. I wish I could watch a video of people just working at the place. Show me how the meetings go, show me how you guys deploy code, show me a developer working on something, show me what happens when an issue in production comes up. ~ There's an idea, video job postings!

How do I discover great new companies? Search, search, search, interview & ask questions, talk to developers, go to meetups and talk to the people there, blog, tweet, hope something interesting somehow makes it in front of my eyeballs.

Oh and one other tip (not my site): http://dearrecruiters.com/

Re:Scala comes to .Net on Monday July 18, 2011 @09:47AM (#2776259)
C# now has one called NuGet.

Edit* Just wanted to clarify it is not specifically for C# but the .NET platform in general.

As a developer myself I would absolutely go with Software Dev. Much more flexibility with those skills IMO.
Re:Poll: Given the opportunity would you work at Google? on Monday July 04, 2011 @04:55PM (#2727848)
In terms of a career I would absolutely take a job at Google. In terms of what I really want to do I would co-found my own thing with a handful of really awesome people.
The only problem I see with this is when Bob, David, Mike and Steve have their own ideas about writing a story and take your love story then turn it into a science fiction novel about aliens, cowboys, race cars and heavy metal.
Re:Flux: Better Lighting for Your Mac on Saturday March 26, 2011 @01:16AM (#2371419)
I've been using F.lux for a while. I used to have it on the 20 second transition speed then I found I could set it to 60 minutes. Now I don't even notice the change but my eyes definitely do not strain as much as they used to at night.
And AppHarbor is making it even easier to deploy .NET projects (YC funded) http://appharbor.com/
And there's plenty of third-party development already happening:

Re:Why I want to learn to code (and how I plan to learn) on Saturday February 05, 2011 @03:37PM (#2183986)
Great idea! I'd love to see the "interactive" side of your idea. For me the coolest thing about starting to learn coding was writing a line, running the app and seeing something output to the screen.

Also what helped me learn was having a mentor who would answer questions and push me to keep learning. I learned a lot mostly from books and working on things I wanted to build. However I recently went through Rails for Zombies and really enjoyed the interactivity of it.

Just thought of a silly but perhaps useful feature... (And assuming this is all done on the website) At the end of each tutorial ask them to write out a commit command. Get them used to version control (Git would be great).

Good luck!

Re:Ask HN: Review RentPost.com on Wednesday January 26, 2011 @01:08PM (#2144209)
Great looking site, love the idea. Forwarded your site off to a few friends who could use this. Best of luck to you!
Re:Register a Business Today on Monday January 03, 2011 @02:16PM (#2064308)
Should you validate your idea first before registering your company? And is it ok to start out with a DBA and then LLC later?
Re:RSS Is Dying, and You Should Be Very Worried on Sunday January 02, 2011 @02:37PM (#2060789)
I want to read my RSS feeds like a newspaper. I think formatting is really the issue. I don't necessarily want a list of links.
