The bad parts are there, but as of today it's a very powerful language that runs on every browser (hence every computer in practice?) with massive community support.

Michio Kaku says: "Lets say we have an ant hill in the middle of the forest. And right next to the ant hill, they’re building a ten-lane super-highway. And the question is “Would the ants be able to understand what a ten-lane super-highway is? Would the ants be able to understand the technology and the intentions of the beings building the highway next to them?"

The chance of higher civilisations being all around us, but us being too primitive to perceive them is my favourite explanation.

There is a great article about The Fermi Paradox (why we might not have been contacted - to our knowledge&proof - by extraterrestrial life): http://waitbutwhy.com/2014/05/fermi-paradox.html

I love the idea but not the implementation. Categorising software according to purpose and tech stack would be the best.
Re:Maps of the Roman Empire on Wednesday August 20, 2014 @05:45AM (#8201691)
Indeed those few centuries after Roman Empire collapses is a great example of human race not (necessarily) advancing as time passes.
Robert C. Martin's Clean Code book has a great section on comments:

- The proper use of comments is to compensate for our failure to express ourself in code. Comments are always failures. We must have them because we cannot always figure out how to express ourselves without them, but their use is not a cause for celebration. So when you find yourself in a position where you need to write a comment, think it through and see whether there isn’t some way to turn the tables and express yourself in code.

- The older a comment is, and the farther away it is from the code it describes, the more likely it is to be just plain wrong. The reason is simple. Programmers can’t realistically maintain them.

- Comments Do Not Make Up for Bad Code! One of the more common motivations for writing comments is bad code. We write a module and we know it is confusing and disorganized. We know it’s a mess. So we say to ourselves, “Ooh, I’d better comment that!” No! You’d better clean it! Clear and expressive code with few comments is far superior to cluttered and complex code with lots of comments. Rather than spend your time writing the comments that explain the mess you’ve made, spend it cleaning that mess.

``` // Bad:
    // Check to see if the employee is eligible for full benefits
        if ((employee.flags & HOURLY_FLAG) &&
        (employee.age > 65))
    // Good:
    if (employee.isEligibleForFullBenefits())
```
So how do you make money off your site?
Re:All your Moves data on one screen on Tuesday May 13, 2014 @01:38PM (#7739477)
All Moves data is not only on this screen.

"We may share information, including personally identifying information, with our Affiliates (companies that are part of our corporate groups of companies, including but not limited to Facebook)" https://www.moves-app.com/privacy

Number of connections, message size, and frequency of messages sent are three main parameters to measure performance, and for some frameworks like Engine.IO, number of connections seems to have the biggest impact on performance (https://medium.com/node-js-javascript/b63bfca0539). It would be good to see the benchmarks with much higher number of connections, as non-blocking IO is usually why people choose Node.js platform.

Re:CityMapper – Point to Point City Directions on Thursday May 08, 2014 @11:56AM (#7715961)
I use CityMapper in London an I'm a huge fan of it. Some of the features I love the most are:

- Foursquare results when searching for a destination

- Saving a trip plan to access it without Internet connection (handy when changing lines underground)

- Get me home and Get me work shortcut buttons on homepage

- Underground line statuses

- Rain safe travel options

- Taxi prices for the chosen travel

- Very user friendly design

Yes exactly. My suggestion was the application to fork (CPUs - 1) workers, ie. 1 master 7 workers, instead of 1 master 3 workers and 3 stores, and have workers manage their key-value stores. Apparently each worker don't need a store, see author's comment (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7713561) so it looks good.
I'm aware, and what's the relevance? I didn't even mention threads.
Why does each worker need a seperate store process? It seems on an 8 core machine max worker count can only be 3 (1 master, 3 workers, 3 stores). If workers had in-memory stores -or at least connect to a Redis server-, with 4 more workers performance should increase.
I'm actually working on a project quite similar to what you two are talking about: http://www.mosttalked.com/ The idea is to prioritise news be shares + display the most popular tweets of people that you possibly care about, along with a summary as well. It might inspire you hopefully. I believe merging news outlets with social media has so many points to improve.
Re:Chapter 7: Real-Time Communication on Wednesday April 09, 2014 @02:21PM (#7561207)
Agreed. With current browser support (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebSocket#Browser_support) and fallback libraries (like http://socket.io/), I believe WebSockets are usually the best choice when it comes to real time communications.
