It works if your existing population is willing to do unskilled labour. Which in my country is not the case
Re:How Meta Built the Infrastructure for Threads on Tuesday January 09, 2024 @03:36AM (#38923755)
"informed the infrastructure teams to prepare for its launch with only two days’ advance notice. "

What a nice way to say we don't respect our engineers. They should hide in the woods with their planning skills and not post about it

Re:Maybe getting rid of your QA team was bad on Friday December 15, 2023 @02:31AM (#38651875)
Yeah this hit home so hard. Had to leave the startup i loved working at, because started doing all this release fast crap. And somehow people think releasing fintech stuff fast and untested is fine.
My personal experience im a daily drinker 2-3 cups, but can easily not drink for couple of days no problem. But i have high blood pressure my uneducated guess is that BP has a lot to do with how you handle non coffee days
Mostly agree, but i think the more seniority you get in your company the less you will deal with these issues and of course changing jobs helps. So basically you might encounter all of these but not necessarily.

And starting from scratch and college is basically the same point

Re:Things I've learned about building CLI tools in Python on Wednesday October 25, 2023 @06:40AM (#38011352)
Same here argparse does everything a cli tool would ever need. Looked at click lib and actually don't even find it more readable
Its interesting that the weight is such an issue. I have 13 pro it weighs a lot and i love it and the case actually adds some weight. Cant name all the reasons why i like it ( just a feeling i guess) but one reason is that i know for sure when the phone is in my pocket and i didnt forget it.

Ask HN: How do you deal with well paid job being too easy/not interesting?

I don't doubt there are a bunch of us who work at the job which is not interesting and at times too easy, but the financial resp. does not allow to change the job to something more interesting. For me personally switching would involve a reasonable pay cut and im no longer single in my 20s (have all the time in the world to learn new stuff) One thing i found is working out every day makes it...

Re:Never waste your midlife crisis on Tuesday July 18, 2023 @06:44AM (#36770304)
Anecdotal: but all of the psychology students i've met were far from being stable and had serious issues of their own. But its just my own experience and a stereotype i have now
Can anyone explain how can it be 20 kilometers in depth and yet Mariana trench is the deepest place on earth 11km ?
Re:Stop Developing This Technology on Thursday February 02, 2023 @08:33AM (#34626263)
I don't really know it does sound super hard. But maybe if we consider that we go down the path where you do not own your tech (we are close to that now) and the companies have some monitoring tools to see what you are doing. And then you have this kind of network of trusted machines that you communicate with.

Edit: i really don't like the idea that i have to be paranoid about every interaction with tech.

Re:Stop Developing This Technology on Thursday February 02, 2023 @08:21AM (#34626128)
I wonder if some form of regulation is coming to tech. We do not allow people to spread heroin freely or slavery or some other sort of horrible stuff.
Re:Quitting the Rat Race on Tuesday January 17, 2023 @04:33AM (#34410667)
Oh I can relate to this as well, but I think its not just being mentally tired. Me personally I want to get through the story, I do not have time to explore the world to get to the next chapter. And I feel a lot of games nowadays have this goal of rewarding exploration at least thats what I get from youtube reviews of the games. So like you for me eventually the game just becomes more work after work
A lot of comments about the internet availability. Living in Northern Europe - never a problem. And as for lets say a flight, you can download spotify music. Audio quality i do agree that spotify kinda sucks
The personal social credit scores section i believe is already happening in China. I saw a DW documentary which was describing social scores in China.
Very interestin. I wonder if you can already have a startup based on this - providing some sort of auth. Not even sure how this kind of tech could be implemented

Ask HN: What tech utopia/horror ideas do you see materialising soon?

What i see happening soon is:With all this recent AI stuff where it is able to create content that feels real I started to think about how AI could just create the world for you.Since we already are basically living in the internet we could have some terrorist organization finding an isolated enough person and attack him with a program that would generate a bubble just for him: fake friends,...

Re:What happens when babies are left to cry it out? on Thursday December 29, 2022 @05:26PM (#34178915)
Human infants were not left alone to go hunt for food, i believe the modern concept of family is at play here. People used to live with their parents so, much more help - much less crying.
I have exactly the same feeling. I wonder if there is something like "Facebook 2008" ? It seems like LinkedIn is slowly taking that spot
Re:Understanding the War in Ukraine on Friday February 25, 2022 @04:05AM (#30465166)
Following your logic sanctions are useless. I think this is ok because nothing will affect Putin. Russian people should eventually not reelect him or somehow remove this government. And for others I think its very reasonable to not do business with such an unpredictable/hostile country.
Re:The reMarkable as a notebook and eBook reader on Monday November 22, 2021 @07:50AM (#29305809)
Seems like mostly people that are not satisfied with their remarkable are trying to do the extra features (ssh, book reading, etc.). for me i 99% use it to keep notes, sketching, read articles and its perfect. for the first time in my life i do actually read my notes
well it kind of make sense due to the fact that people used to look up much more. i suggest you travel outside of light pollution and at night you will see what ancient people saw.
Re:World on 'catastrophic' path to 2.7C warming, warns UN chief on Friday September 17, 2021 @01:45PM (#28568523)
Don't think EV is going to help much. On the individual level anything you would do is miniscule. The change has to come from politicians, so its all about voting.
I wonder if going underground can help (being realistic that we are not going to make any drastic CO2 related changes)

Cheating in school/university makes you better equipped for being a dev

In ex-Soviet country Universities cheating is like an art form, its something we (at least in my University) used to be proud of. It dawned on me that cheating and copying others work (adapting it to look like your own) is very similar to what i do now: take code samples, solutions from the Stack Overflow etc. and adapt it to look like its the job that i have done. I was pretty good at...
