Re:Neopets Is Coming Back Bigger and Better Than Ever on Wednesday July 19, 2023 @10:50AM (#36787356)
I was going to mention this as well. I am of the demographic squarely aimed at the NeoPets revival (late millenials/early gen-z) and not a single person I know views NeoPets in a good light after they tried to pivot to NFTs.

I'm sure not everyone holds the same views as my friends and I, but I know they burned a LOT of good will trying to make a quick buck.

Ask HN: What are some things you wish your onboarding included?

Hey Hackers, I am tasked with coming up with a new on-boarding process for newly hired programmers. The vast majority of these will be mid-level/intermediate programmers who have several years of experience, but not necessarily in Government.Besides the basic meet n' greets and getting development environment setup, etc. is there any specifics your companies onboarding process did well that...

Re:The rise of lonely, single men on Thursday August 11, 2022 @04:18PM (#32431206)
I don't understand how this is exclusively a men's issue. Now this is completely out of my realm as a gay woman but wouldn't this roughly mean that there is a similar amount of straight women who are single as well? In my experience polyamory among the straights isn't nearly as common as the internet likes to make it sound. In general, millennials (and I assume gen-z as well) are having less sex on average and getting into less relationships than previous generations.
Re:Top Secret Rosies: The Female “Computers” of WWII on Thursday August 11, 2022 @04:03PM (#32431029)
I find it hilarious that by just having fellow women exist it is somehow political... You do realize the overwhelming majority of computers in WWII were women right?
Re:Flipper Zero – Portable Multi-Tool Device for Geeks on Wednesday July 20, 2022 @11:19AM (#32167013)
Do you have any source for this? A cursory search brings up nothing for me.
Re:Soft deletion probably isn't worth it on Tuesday July 19, 2022 @03:14PM (#32156540)
As someone who has done development work with Class A data and specifically in the realm of justice, soft deletes aren't simply a good idea, they are required by law.

Most of these downsides are easily mitigatable issues as well. As many users have stated, something like views solves the issue of forgetting the 'deleted' clause.

Lastly, I'm not sure the issue with foreign keys/stray records really resonates with me. I'd be hard pressed to be comfortable allowing a developer or DBA who isn't fully comfortable with the data model to be hard deleting records, let alone flagging them as soft deleted.

Having grown up somewhere northern that doesn't follow DST (Saskatchewan) I never really understood this argument. Winter months you get so little sunlight anyways I don't really see how it would make too much of a difference.

Mind you this could be because of where I grew up, but moving to somewhere that follows DST I always saw it more as an inconvenience than anything else.

Re:Discord has won over gamers. Now it wants everybody else on Thursday August 26, 2021 @11:33AM (#28316219)
As far as I know this is still in A/B testing as well, and not a fully rolled out feature. I've had a friend with it for the better part of the year, yet I have yet to get the option on any of my servers.
The new ray tracing is being done in real time rather than being baked into the scenes.
Interesting. The entire site is geoblocked with this message

Re:Akira Kurosawa’s Record of a Living Being on Thursday June 04, 2020 @03:30PM (#23420760)
Another film that deals with Nuclear Holocaust, albeit more of the direct aftermath is BBC's Threads[1].

Re:A first look at Unreal Engine 5 on Wednesday May 13, 2020 @11:55AM (#23168178)
It may have changed, but back when we were looking into Engines to use, Unity had a completely free license until you hit $100,00 in sales or wanted to remove the unity splash screen on app launch which costed a then flat $1500 licensing fee for the "Professional Edition".
Re:A first look at Unreal Engine 5 on Wednesday May 13, 2020 @11:45AM (#23168051)
This is a huge jump from the previous $3000 per quarter being royalty-free when they initially made UE4 free. It will be interesting to see if it helps them capture more of the indie studios from Unity.
Re:How to Detect Business Fraud on Tuesday May 05, 2020 @11:34AM (#23081139)
We have this growing wild everywhere in Northern Saskatchewan. I always was terrified I would accidentally touch it and die as a kid up at our cabin.

Thankfully, once you know what to look for, it sticks out like a sore thumb.

I completely get that! I grew up in a large low income family, so I completely get that mindset of having a job above all else.

What would your plans be if you weren't to strike out on this business? Another option is to always moonlight your startup while working somewhere else. That gives you a bit more of a cushion if your business idea doesn't turn out.

It may seem like everyone is wiser than you, but that isn't true! Often times you will have a better understanding than you think :)

Does that $600 make a large difference in your budget?

Realistically, a one man operation shouldn't be too affected by this pandemic, depending on the market you are going for. Obviously industries such as hospitality are getting hit a lot harder than others.

Outside of you personally getting sick and causing it to halt development, I don't think it should be much of a concern.

Oh for sure, I don't expect it to have any significant impact.

Interesting point regarding HVAC usage, I am curious to see the density required for it to become a net positive.

It will be really interesting to see how much of an affect on Global Warming this Pandemic has had.

I'm hoping if we can learn any lessons from this, it is better pandemic planning and larger companies finally seeing the benefit of remote work.

Re:Startups threatened by iOS 14’s new features on Wednesday March 11, 2020 @06:50PM (#22551655)
I really hope this is the case. The biggest issue I always have with the trackers is the granularity just doesn't seem to be fine enough.

Mind you I have never tried Tile, so they may be better in that regard, but there is only so much you can do off a single bluetooth signal

Re:Startups threatened by iOS 14’s new features on Wednesday March 11, 2020 @06:37PM (#22551578)
Bluetooth. I think AirTags will most likely use some combination of bluetooth and the new U1 chip included in the iPhone 11 Pro which should hopefully give it more granularity than a plain old bluetooth tracker would.
Irresponsible mostly. Bahrain has already said it plans to hold their Grand Prix in an empty grandstand.

I do think the host tracks would prefer to have a full Grand Stand, due to ticket sales, but I'm not sure how much it would affect F1 as a whole.

Sadly, there seems to be a sense of invincibility almost towards the virus in Western Countries until all of a sudden it arrives and you are dealing with hundreds or thousands of cases.

Thank you! You said my words better than I could have.

I probably shouldn't compose comments when I am rushing between things!

That makes a lot more sense to me. I do think both sides of the politcal spectrum are seeking to advance any parts of their agenda they can with this outbreak.

I just felt that if something that ridiculous was said (and I am a fairly liberal person!) it would have most likely made international news.

I asked for a source where the quote is said as I was not able to find one, yet you still haven't provided one.

Again, could you provide an article (Italian or English!) where "they" are telling you the only virus is racism?

Could you provide a link to where "the left" has said the only virus is racism? I wasn't able to find anything, but admittedly my Italian is not great.

I find it hard to believe, and given Italy's recent problems with the far-right surge, it seems to be more fake news.
