The sooner that IBM and Oracle die the better.
I agree. The free-market did not work, time for regulations.

Violating terms or not- it's still a lot of power for Google to hold over a person and there should be some consumer protections for this.
Re:First Paper to Link CO2 and Global Warming (1856) on Monday October 14, 2019 @10:12AM (#21248464)
Yeah, being left out of the models plays into the conspiracy factor. My father mentioned that climate scientists are shills knowingly leaving out this data.
Re:“My Google account got suspended because of NewPipe” on Monday October 14, 2019 @09:36AM (#21248056)
Is there a way to get your data out if your account is suspended? In the very least there needs to be some recourse and a way for users to export their data if their account is suspended.

>legally demanded

Meaning whenever the hell they feel like it. From the outside looking in, one problem seems to be a lack of a legitimate legal framework. Is there truly law in China? In the US at least, companies can throw out illegitimate requests for information. Can you tell the Chinese government, "no" for any reason? Citizens in western Democracies regularly sue their own government and win.

This, "everyone does it" defense is bullshit.

Re:First Paper to Link CO2 and Global Warming (1856) on Monday October 14, 2019 @07:06AM (#21246953)
My father has been going on about cloud coverage lately. The conspiracy being that they have a cooling effect and invalidate some liberal climate change agenda.
Re:Apple Removes HKmap.live from the App Store on Friday October 11, 2019 @08:02AM (#21223488)
That's true. The Chinese government could just decide they do not like you and you have no recourse whatsoever. Good point.
Re:Apple Removes HKmap.live from the App Store on Thursday October 10, 2019 @12:14PM (#21216234)
They are seeking new revenue in the Chinese market. To them they see a minuscule boycott in the US as the cost of gaining that market- net positive.

How many people have died in these huge, violent and destructive protests that have been raging for months?
All your peers are doing it and improving their social credit scores. Do you want to fall behind your peers?
A lot of things are taxed multiple times. I pay income tax, then use that taxed income to purchase a vehicle which carries a sales tax, and for awhile I even paid a tax on the value of that car annually. Same money being taxed multiple times. All recurring property tax can be viewed this way.

Inheritance or gifts should absolutely be taxed as income to the person receiving.

Look at it this way- they basically are not allowed to say anything else. I pity them but at the same time I hope things improve for them.
Is China a more profitable market than the US? It's worrying that US companies are willing to go this far for foreign profit.
Don't forget that long starship travels and long timeline scientific endeavors are now a reality.
The person receiving should count it as income and have it taxed accordingly.
Imagine $1.9T investment into fusion?
Re:Why some software developers hate Agile on Thursday October 03, 2019 @02:34PM (#21150371)
Kanban seems pretty similar to a method I used in college to track tasks, not even software tasks. This leads me to believe that it is intuitive since it more or less naturally made sense to me before ever knowing Kanban was a thing.

Going to look for this or something like it when job searching.

Apple should allow app sideloading.

I'm more free than you- I use whatever the hell that I want. No social movement required.
Re:Is the era of the $100 graphing calculator coming to an end? on Monday September 23, 2019 @03:13PM (#21052457)
This is a contributing factor as to why I'm still shit at math to this day. I'd just spend all class writing programs in the calculator that did the work for me.
Re:Will America's debt doom us? on Monday September 23, 2019 @11:22AM (#21049730)
Bill Clinton accomplished that but at some cost. My father still laments the cancellation of the superconducting supercollider that he had the pleasure to work on.

These protections are used all the time- it just doesn't always make the news.

>demonstrably taking steps to ensure better oversight.

Like expanding the protections? We see a whistle-blower complaint right now in the news working pretty much as intended, with the whistle-blower's identity being protected.

Re:My Talk at Microsoft on Monday September 23, 2019 @09:27AM (#21048697)
This is a hypothetical. I realize the improbability.
Just say that then? He was intentionally misleading or he was lying.
Re:My Talk at Microsoft on Monday September 23, 2019 @09:02AM (#21048491)
I'm usually the first to shit on Stallman but I really liked his suggestions here.

But hypothetically if Microsoft fully implements all of what RMS suggested would Windows be listed as an approved distro on gnu.org?

https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-non-gnu-distros.html

https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guideli...

I have. Being a hero means some risk to yourself does it not? Ultimately if you piss off a government you're going to run the risk of things going poorly for yourself.

All I know is the last place he should have went was to a foreign country. Official channels -> congress -> media, and this is at great risk but this is what Ellsberg did.

With all this said- whistle-blower protections ought to become mandatory training for all DoD contractors, government employees, or anyone who handles classified information.

If that's the case why does he feel the need to lie about it? Why should I believe anything that he says now? I don't like being lied to- not by my government, and not by Mr. Snowden.

If he had noble intentions he took the worst possible route through this minefield.

Re:iPhone 11 Pro Camera Review on Thursday September 19, 2019 @11:17AM (#21016997)
The new iPhone camera looks pretty sweet but the part that I'm starting to disagree with is what they call, "semantic rendering." This is where the camera recognizes different things in the photo and treats them different like sharpening some areas, smoothing others, etc.

To me this this aspect feels like basically an Instagram filter. Are we going for accuracy or how pleasing the photos are? They're definitely more pleasing but not an accurate representation.
