A small town in Appalachia I grew up in had a Scottish Museum and Festival. Franklin, NC
I'm actually from that area and recently been back to take the glass bottom boat tour. The monkey's are pretty illusive and usually stay away from humans and live in the Silver Springs state park, which is next to the Ocala national forest (second largest nationally protected forest in the US). I remember the guide telling us only a few people have died from contact. In those cases were reseacher/scientist that had been studying the monkeys and had been urinated on (in the face in one case). The monkey's do bring tourist dollars to a pretty poor economic area.
Also it looks like it is patented tech http://www.faqs.org/patents/app/20140240578
Just go to the ones that interest you. meetup.com is a great place to find hack nights, meet friends, and find startups. When I first moved here I went to Ruby meetups, hack nights, dev talks. I quickly realized that everyone here was way smarter than I was and it was awesome. So much to learn.

Yes, I agree. The flow of traffic for most commuters, like myself, seem to around 75 mph.

"The speed limit is commonly set at or below the 85th percentile operating speed (being the speed which no more than 15% of traffic is exceeding)[41][42][43] and in the US is typically set 8 to 12 mph (13 to 19 km/h) below that speed." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limit

Just last night I watched an older episode of Jay Leno's Garage and they brought in a few of California Highway Patrol (CHP) cars to show off. The officer explains that new cars are equipped with a license plate scanner find wanted people.

Re:Hubble captures the sharpest ever view of Andromeda Galaxy on Monday January 05, 2015 @07:12PM (#8842148)
You are right about the collision course. The two will slowly merge into a bigger galaxy like in this picture: http://cas.sdss.org/dr6/en/proj/basic/galaxies/images/752-6-...
Re:Hyperloop is making progress on Friday December 19, 2014 @01:49PM (#8773770)
The article says "800 mph". Meaning it would be around 30 minutes. Not including accel/decel. No? It takes a flight hour to hour and a half from LA <> SF.
How many years?
Re:Ask HN: How do you keep your eyes in healthy? on Friday December 05, 2014 @05:21PM (#8707265)
Flux is on Windows and Linux, as well.
Wow, almost $2.5B at today's cost. There is no way that they would allow that much today.

Side note: I found out a while back that 47,500 55 gallon barrels were dumped off the California coast near the Farallon Islands.

Re:Time lapse of the Sun reveals the largest sunspot in 24 years on Tuesday November 11, 2014 @03:37PM (#8592006)
Everytime I see pictures or video of the Sun I feel very small. Some of the solar flares are bigger than our planet. I am not even going to mention the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field poster on my wall that has around 10,000 galaxies.
Re:Sleep, Caffeine and your daily schedule? poll on Tuesday November 11, 2014 @02:17PM (#8591605)
- Software Engineer

- 7-9 hours

- sleep from 10pm - 6:30am

- 8 hours for optimal

- 1-2 medium coffees per week when I need it most. I do this so my body does not get use to the caffeine.

I signed up to http://codingforinterviews.com/ awhile back and only got a couple problems in my inbox. Hope to have better luck with this one.
Re:On the phenomenon of bullshit jobs on Wednesday November 05, 2014 @02:05PM (#8563572)
I disagree somewhat. Repetitious physical work can make you lose focus quite easily and that is when most accidents occur. On the contrary, office employees that drink lots of coffee and being drowsy doesn't have to do with work necessarily, but with the their bodies being immune to the caffeine.
Is salary a factor? What if your salary was $50K or even $40K? Would that deter you from pursuing software development as a new venture?
Re:Ask HN: Orange-tinted sunglasses for programming at night? on Wednesday October 15, 2014 @02:30PM (#8460675)
f.lux saves money and you look less goofy IMO. They both do the same thing by blocking the blue from screens. Sounds like companies are just trying to make and extra buck selling glasses.
Re:How contagious is ebola? on Thursday October 09, 2014 @03:56PM (#8434686)
On NPR radio this morning with doctors answering questions about the issue. Some doctors say that the only way to contract it is by body fluids and then through going in open abrasion, mouth, and etc. They also say that is could potentially be caught within a radius of 3 feet, but there still is not a lot of research.

On VICE they went to ground zero and showed the epidemic up close. They always had to wash their hands with chlorine.

A side note, they are putting Ebola testing check points in five different US International Airports. This seems a little worrisome because I believe these Airports could be easily bypassed.

In honesty, as an American, I am not too worried about contracting it here.

Re:Prison Bankers Who Profit from the Inmates on Tuesday September 30, 2014 @05:37PM (#8391444)
I am a victim of these ridiculous fees. I thought about how someone was getting rich and I justified the fees because of the convenience. It most certainly cut back how much I sent and how frequently I used it. This directly affects the incarcerated person.

Side note: PayPal allows you to send money to friends and family for free.

Yes, this would be nice since I couldn't figure out the heart in the demo.
What about Sidecar? Isn't that Lyft's rival? I think SideCar and Lyft are about the same service since they don't offer black town cars/luxury SUVs.

Re:Space Needle Still Standing After Reported Drone Strike on Thursday July 24, 2014 @09:03PM (#8083290)
"Space Needle Still Standing After Reported Small Drone Strike" should be the title and nobody would care. Seems like the government likes to instill fear. I thought it was a terrorist attack or something. Weird timing with all the Obama law talk about drones.
