Re:American views of higher ed decline, once again on Friday October 30, 2026 @03:06PM (#50308720)
The reality is that college is a business decision. You pay in years of your life and quite possibly loans as large as mortgages, so you better not be another highly educated barista when you're done.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @03:11PM (#50123021)
Just go test drive a Tesla. No one can properly explain the driving experience.

You don't have to buy it and it costs you nothing. The sales people aren't sleazy either.

Just try it so you can speak from experience.

>the property tax is a form of wealth tax...

I stopped reading after that. That's when it became obvious the author has valued ideology over understanding.

Property taxes affect renters just as much as home owners...unless you think your rent only goes up because your landloard is greedy.

Re:Ask HN: How is AI destruction of books legal? on Thursday September 17, 2026 @07:57AM (#49739486)
Its private property. I don't like it either, but I wouldn't like intrusive laws either.
Re:The U.S. just had its hottest summer on record on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @06:20PM (#49635345)
Supposedly I live in much above average. But I thought it was below average and nothing seem3d out of the ordinary.
Harnesses are the new Javascript web framework hotness.

Have you noticed there haven't been any new web frameworks in a while?

That's been replaced by harnesses.

Re:The Graph That Should Be Front-Page News on Monday July 13, 2026 @07:27AM (#48891042)
The mean is created using 29 years of data. Why those particular 29 years? IDK.

But I tend to dismiss findings like this that don't explain why they chose a very specific dates as the baseline.

This seems a bit dramatic.
I don't have much love for this guy. He donated millions to the EFF to the point where CL owned the EFF.

When CL bullied people who lightly scraped their site with CFAA threats, the EFF would not help. Ultimately, they ended up on the wrong side of history.

While Musk has created hundreds of thousands of jobs and God knows how many millionaires, Newmark complains about him while having only created around 50 jobs. 50.

Instead of building something else and employing more people he watches TV and feeds pigeons.

Bravo. He's basically a beatnik who won the lottery.

Re:Midjourney Medical on Thursday June 18, 2026 @08:31AM (#48584358)
This is more true than people realize. My wife and I got full body MRI scans.

Both showed "possible" medical issues. My though was "Great, I have a baseline, in two years I'll get another one and compare".

My wife on the other hand got a bit obsessed about her results and had what was probably an unnecessary procedure to biopsy something, which turned out to be benign.

I suppose you could argue that another way...better safe than sorry...but the stress that is caused by known uncertainty vs unknown uncertainty can be too much.

I don't let the AI make any choices. I have a lot of instructions and sample code for it to follow. It is basically a glorified code generator at that point.
I wonder if that is even possible since the whole point of the motor is an imbalance of magnetic forces.

From the outer Cape it sounded like a long low rumble. I tought it was the wind making an unusual noise.
Re:AI sticker shock hits corporate America on Thursday May 28, 2026 @09:33AM (#48308756)
I don't think compacting often is good for saving money. It generates more output tokens and then the input is no longer from cache, which is priced differently...typically very differently.
Re:dotNET (OK, C#) gets union types on Saturday May 23, 2026 @05:49PM (#48251896)
I wish the syntax looked more like typescript. This will confuse my eyes for a while.
Or is it posible this administration just took a win-win-win position?

1 - US oil and gas companies make money as oil proces rise. The US is the largest producer in the world.

2 - China loses it's major source of oil and gas.

3 - Iran gets neutralized. It may not look like it now, but it will probably end up that way.

Re:SQLite Code of Ethics on Thursday May 14, 2026 @08:07AM (#48134239)
It's nice to see some humble people inside the tech space.

Too many of us believe we are gods as we command our machines to do our will. That was me once.

If the news about his investing over the last several years is true, he's been shorting a bull market for 4 years now. It better go bust or he will.
Re:A Context Editor Is All Codex Needs on Friday May 08, 2026 @09:14AM (#48062635)
Won't this have a negative impact on token cache?
Successful men are not intimidated by successful women, they just don't desire them (for their success)...in general.

The intimidation comes into play when men are put at an income disadvantage. Women also don't find men who make less than them desirable (in general). So it's a double wammy.

A single mutli-millionaire guy is not going to be impressed by a woman who works 50 hrs a week and makes $400k.

He would rather someone available to take care of his needs while he can take care of the financial needs.

This is the opposite of what successful females want.

Counter point...have you seen the rates a females on anti-anxiety / anti-depression medication in our culture?

I'm not a moral relativist, but I'm not sure we've perfected things here either.

I'll play this out...

Every human is equally valuable in the moral sense.

But value is subjective when we are talking about relationships and we can only generalize about this value.

High income women are more valuable to low income men.

High income men already have money. They value other attributes.

And this is the paradox successful women can face. Their success doesn’t attract the mates they desire, quite the opposite. And worse, they were never told that. They were told the opposite.

I feel like you didn't get the joke at the end.
Yeah. I've seen this happen with people doing it. It's just bad access management.

And anyone can do it with the wrong access granted at the wrong moment in time...even Sr. Devs.

At least this one won't weight on any person's conscience. The AI just shrugs it off.

Re:Clay PCB Tutorial on Sunday April 26, 2026 @12:57PM (#47911773)
Interesting project but I can't tell, is the language used supposed to be satire?
Yes, I meant to respond to other comments in here directly, but got messed up.

Others had floated the idea of locking by using an alternate finger with touchID, after the fact.

INAL, but if the authorities had captured your device with touchID enabled and legally ask you to use it to login and you do an action that would disable touchID, then that would be "obstruction".
Re:What do agents like OpenClaw bring to the table? on Friday March 13, 2026 @11:11AM (#47365553)
The major thing I like is being able to use it from telegram. Its a different usage model.

It feels like a co-worker.

Re:I’m joining OpenAI on Sunday February 15, 2026 @05:56PM (#47028612)
Openclaw did what no major model producer would do. Release insanly insecure software that can do whatever it wants on your machine.

If openai had done it themselves, immediate backlash.
