News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

deadcat

I'm not surprised, given the fragmented nature of Linux in terms of distro, packaging, and libraries. Given the low number of Linux gamers, there is probably no business case to deal with the support effort.

Slashdot website, which was once a massive tech discussion site.

Odd, I just tested this and it worked correctly.
Re:Teams is killing my Mac every day on Thursday July 14, 2022 @01:03AM (#32092215)
This is a strange thread for me. I have a 2021 16" Macbook pro. I use Teams every day, and have some long meetings. The memory use is about 1Gb. I have no issues with it. It is snappy and performant.
Re:Aurelia 2 alpha announced: releasing March 2, 2021 on Sunday February 14, 2021 @10:41PM (#26138793)
Probably far better than Angular, yet will still be ignored by the corporate world... which is a real pity.

Really? you really want to argue that Trump wondering if disinfectant can be injected to destroy the virus is anything other than dangerously ignorant?

We have things that can be injected to destroy the virus. They are called "vaccines".

Trumps dumb suggestion is like watching someone use a weed whacker in their yard, then asking if microscopic weed whackers can be injected to fight the virus. I expect it off a young child, not a President.

Wow, those are the ugliest desktops I have ever seen.

I can't see Google following through, but just imagine... Australia forced to use Bing!

Re:Developer Experience: Fundamentally harder than normal UX on Monday February 24, 2020 @02:46PM (#22407655)
I've always referred to myself as a Developer, as my degree is Info Tech, not Engineering.

I'm not an accredited engineer, so I feel I have no right to the title.

It really annoys me that some manages at work call themselves Release Train Engineers.

Re:Windows 10 to offer Paint and WordPad as optional features on Saturday February 08, 2020 @06:49PM (#22279438)
If you are writing .net core sure. Otherwise you are going to hit issues building and debugging. Why you would be attempting that outside of a Windows VM, I'm not sure.
Re:What should have been an IMG element became this on Sunday October 20, 2019 @11:12PM (#21309057)
Reddit is trying to eat their lunch?

Imgur sprung up as a fast image host for Reddit, then Imgur turned into a social media site - a competitor for Reddit.

In that process Imgur became shitty at their core function... hosting images!

Vscode is perfectly hackable and open, can you be more specific?
Re:We Need Chrome No More on Thursday February 28, 2019 @01:39AM (#19269453)
Sadly I find that the Firefox debugger is more likely to stall and flail about.

I keep trying to change to Firefox, but bring dragged back to Chrome.

I mostly work on stupidly big Single Page Apps, which may be part of the issue.

Re:Australian Government Design System on Monday January 14, 2019 @11:47PM (#18908916)
You are preaching to the choir here mate. Keep in mind we have over 60 developers, and over 100 single page applications under development/support.

The frameworks we are using have been in use here since 2014 (pre-dating the DesignSystem). It is not an easy matter to switch over to these components, especially considering the only framework supported is React.

As far as unnecessary public expenditure... I could probably write 1000 pages on it and not make a dent.

I would like to, but they are too tightly coupled to our stack.
Re:Australian Government Design System on Monday January 14, 2019 @07:40PM (#18907963)
The agency I work for is doing pretty extensive work to support JAWS 2018/2019, and NVDA. The problem we have is that a fix for a specific issue in JAWS may break NVDA (or cause double reads).

Making everything work nicely in our Single Page Apps is a nightmare.

Re:Australian Government Design System on Monday January 14, 2019 @07:36PM (#18907953)
The business portal already has work underway to replace it. The Tax Agent portal has a replacement currently in beta. My gov itself doesn't have much content on it - or are you referring to ATOOnline ?
Re:Australian Government Design System on Monday January 14, 2019 @07:35PM (#18907945)
Bigger Australian government departments tend to roll our own components anyway - simply because we are all running on our own stacks with differing needs.

The department I work for still uses Knockout/Durandal for example.

They also fucked the Queensland Health payroll system.... 1 billion over budget.
Re:Giving Up on the Current MacBook Pro Keyboard on Wednesday April 25, 2018 @09:17PM (#16928033)
Thinkpads are made by Lenovo, who have a very bad history. They have used the UEFI bootloader to install spyware.

The mac UI is nicer than the various Linux window managers.

Running a mac lets me do cross platform development
