Re:Passit: Open-Source Password Manager on Friday January 19, 2024 @01:02PM (#39058794)
Could the "sync" mechanism be provided by iCloud, Dropbox, etc. so long as it's end-to-end encrypted?

Managing a vault server sounds like a pain.

Re:Terraform best practices for reliability at any scale on Saturday August 05, 2023 @07:46AM (#37011071)
If many different "states" are used for one big architecture, how are the boundaries between them managed?

Under one state, Terraform will spot issues here during `plan`, but with many states issues will only appear after `apply`.

Not disagreeing, but you might find it interesting to learn about the history of the term "jaywalking"

Ahh why?! Scala is FP larping as OOP. Great type system, poor syntax.

Does Nostr have any mechanisms to ensure anonymity, or can the relay log everything?

Be sure to checkout Koyaanisqatsi if you like experimental films and Philip Glass

But then you are working on half as many things.
Re:Netflix's New Chapter on Monday January 23, 2023 @02:42PM (#34493887)
Indeed. Feels like vast majority of the TV worth watching is HBO. I value my time so I'd rather have access to a few HBO series / year than an endless sea of A/B dross.
Re:Pipe Operator (|>) For JavaScript on Friday January 20, 2023 @02:14PM (#34458222)
At work I am always hopping between F# and JavaScript and I'm convinced that if more people had this experience they would want the pipe operator in JavaScript.

Unfortunately it's hard to convey the advantages to those who haven't used it. Maybe it's because it's such a simple bit of syntatic-sugar?

Re:Pipe Operator (|>) For JavaScript on Friday January 20, 2023 @02:10PM (#34458157)
The F# syntax is an incredibly simple bit of syntactic sugar.

Just replace this:

    x |> f
With this:

    f(x)

For the join example, you must do this:

    xs
    |> x => x.join(' ')
It de-sugars to:

    (x => x.join(' '))(xs)
... which of course is simply:

    xs.join(' ')

Until it's not though. This is a pretty major architectural constraint on your code that you would not hit quite so early with a faster language.

Hmmm I wonder about trolley problems

RAII can push resources to a collection that is disposed later

I am very bullish on Carbon. Using C++ semantics will make switching and integration much easier.
Re:Three things for the next 100 years of Computer Science on Tuesday December 27, 2022 @02:51PM (#34152937)
Will we care about proofs and type-systems once we have AI systems that reliably answer questions like "does this code do X?" and "under what conditions does this code violate invariant Y?"
Funny what gets picked up. I'm not convinced Neuromancer is a good movie plot-wise, and it risks looking like a cheap Blade Runner clone.

Why can't someone adapt Consider Phlebas? The book is already an action/adventure movie and the drones would make great merch :)

Dune was enjoyable and all but HE SKIPPED THE DINNER SCENE arguably one of the most important bits!

The 360 launched first so it was probably at a higher units sold for a few years at least.

Are Nix and Bazel mutually exclusive?

Re:Act: Run your GitHub Actions locally on Saturday November 26, 2022 @06:14AM (#33751744)
I agree. GitHub Actions should call your scripts but your scripts should not depend on GitHub Actions API.

I also suggest Bazel as a consideration alongside Make. With Bazel, you get two advantages over Make:

1. It is easier to ensure that what GitHub Actions runs and builds is the same as what you have locally, since Bazel can fetch toolchains as part of the build process

2. Using a Bazel remote cache, you do not have to repeat work if the build fails halfway and you need to make some changes before running it again.

I think that BH has underperformed the S&P500 for some time now. They are also quite old now - what happens to the share price after they pass?
> They have to find Brexit benefits so we have pointless plans to depart from eu rules

The purpose of this is two-fold:

1. Make it harder for future governments to reverse Brexit or reverse parts of Brexit

2. Make it harder for Scotland to leave the UK by making it harder for an independent Scotland rejoin the EU due to regulatory differences
