It's interesting how none of the top comments mentions capitalism as the reason for companies losing their original mission. It's the same force that causes enshittification: the (unachieavable) infinite pursuit of profit. Sooner or later all companies will fall into the "financial gravity". The ones the author mentioned just haven't gotten there yet.
In case you're not aware, Chinese cars have the same or even better quality than US, European and Japanese cars. Their electric vehicles are cheap and high quality, it's really impressive.
The App Store app seems to be using web views extensively.

Well in a country where company lobbying is legal, it's very debatable if political parties are really defending the interests of people.
> What I can’t quite disentangle is whether it taught me how to get what I had always wanted or taught me what to want.
This is a question that keeps coming back to me and I still don't know the answer. And maybe I'll never will.
Your charity argument only validates the parent's comment. No healthy society should rely on private charitable as safety net for the less fortunates.
It's interesting that your feeling that "academia is dying, and dare i say irrelevant", to me, is exactly what brought us here and to the status quo you're complaining about. Maybe return to academia and improve things there?

I wish Firefox had a good multi-account support like Chrome has. That, and the fact that iOS 14 might allow to set your default browser would make me move to use Firefox everywhere.
Why do you consider the time playing Everquest wasted? It was what you wanted to do, you did it and had fun. Now you want to do something else and that's fine.
I lost my mom this year to the same cancer and I get really excited with any advancements that are made in this area. I feel like we're still playing with sticks and stones in terms of pancreatic cancer treatment. The whole surgery plus chemotherapy is just barbaric.
I was going to comment that I'd love to know/read more about the author. Where can I follow him?
And it's a lottery in the end. You can't count on it until you're selected.
My mom was diagnosed 1.5 years ago, and the uncertainty of it all is the worst part. It soothes my heart to know I'm not going through this alone.
Cool, that makes sense. Thanks!

The US Government opens the program for applications on April and then it reaches the quota usually in a few days. Does that mean that if I apply for a job in the US in May (and I need a H1B visa) I'm out of luck? Do I need to hurry and apply for a job let's say before March?
Definitely not Portuguese, you're right (source: I'm Brazilian.)

I've been working remotely (not in NA/EUR) for the past 2 years now and, even though I love the life quality improvements, I feel like it might not be worth on the long run. What I'm most worried about is: how would I grow my career? I like being a developer, but I think I'm going to do my best work being a Product Manager, and it doesn't seem to be easy to achieve that being remote.I've been...
I think that one business model that will never get old is information spread. Most (all?) of the problems we see in the world today could possibly be fixed if people were more knowledgeable. And I don't mean necessarily textbook knowledge, but common stuff as well.
For example, I live in a somewhat small city and it's not easy to know where can I go to have swimming classes. Google could help me with that, but usually these places aren't very tech-savvy (or they do have a certain presence, but they don't keep it updated).
Another great example: https://www.pointy.com/.
It's not like everyone have the kind of money to do NYC shopping experience (specially if you're not American.)
Thanks for sharing you experience!

For example, if you're working in a country where you don't have fluency in the local language, is this a barrier?

I've been thinking about this for a while. From my understanding, each vote cast would create an entry on the global blockchain. But the minimum one can spend to create a node is a Satoshi, which is frowned upon on the community, and even so when you get to millions of votes, it'd become a bit expensive to keep the app working. Did I get this right or is there a better approach to scale?
I hope Apple does something similar and we can all move towards this direction, which seems to be the best approach, in my opinion.
