Another day another GHA incident
Re:JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases on Friday October 16, 2026 @01:50PM (#50121795)
Fair point. HDR images in Firefox just do not work at all, regardless of the format.
Re:JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases on Friday October 16, 2026 @12:49PM (#50120879)
I really hope that some day Firefox supports HDR AVIF images
Re:Apple's smart home camera reportedly won't record video on Friday October 02, 2026 @02:28AM (#49930416)
it has also been available on apple home for 10 years
in addition to the absolute lunacy of the charges in the main article, the list of similar cases where parents were charged/convicted for letting their children walk a short distance alone is absurd

america really is a backwards place

I also appreciated that the site didn’t give me a popup asking me to sign up to its newsletter.
Disregarding the fact that this thing is completely broken, its grading rubric is ridiculous to begin with (as was mentioned in the article itself, but I must reiterate how completely stupid this is):

> 35 points for open source contributions

> 30 for personal projects

I don't contribute to open source or have personal projects because I don't spend my free time doing what I do 40 hours a week to make a living. My 15 years of work experience is worth a maximum of 25%, so any company using this idiotic system would pass on me immediately. Open source and personal projects are fine, but in no sane world are they worth 65% of a resume's score.

it should not be legal for the product page to say “purchase” or “buy” when in reality you’re only renting it with a to be determined end date
Re: on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @10:11PM (#48667990)
this news article from the catholic church is surely going to be objective and free of bias
> I built

Seems more accurate to say “an LLM ripped off”

i am pretty confident that at least 99.99% of people dont put their phone in airplane mode when not actively making a call
Re:Jellyfin: The Free Software Media System on Saturday February 15, 2025 @07:13PM (#43063880)
im running a pihole so i take advantage of lighttpd that it uses, with the mod_proxy configuration. i can then do something like the following to have a friendly url on my local network

$HTTP["host"] == "jellyfin.dc" { proxy.server = ( "" => ( ( "host" => "192.168.1.99", "port" => "8096" ) ) ) }

Re:Google Maps now shows the 'Gulf of America' on Monday February 10, 2025 @08:17PM (#43007749)
> Gulf of America is a more inclusive name anyway since both USA and Mexico are part of North America

gulf of america is not more inclusive. the "renaming" was not meant to be inclusive, it was very clearly meant to be divisive.

this is a similar argument to one often used when people call canadians americans: "umm, ackshully, canada is in north america, so it's correct to call them americans"

and of course the flaw in that argument is that literally nobody on earth considers canadians to be americans except people on the internet trying to sound smart.

i'm playing around with your onshape document and learning a lot of things for my own projects. thanks! (also, amazing work of course)
Re:How ads are chewing through half of your mobile data on Sunday January 05, 2025 @03:20PM (#42604684)
i’ve been doing the same for a few years now. wireguard’s “on demand” feature is perfect for this. the odd time i’ll have to shut it off to get through a captive wifi portal, but otherwise it (along with browser ad blockers) has made mobile browsing significantly less terrible

i am really really tired of having to close 3 pop ups before finding out i can only read the headline of the article before hitting a paywall. wish hn would have a rule against unusable links like this, or a bot that automatically swaps to an archive link or something

Re:Man dies after being knocked down by woman on scooter on Sunday September 22, 2024 @11:50PM (#41622242)
we have these scooters in my (very touristy) town. they make an annoying “bing bong avoid sidewalks” sound when driven on the sidewalk, but that’s it. they don’t limit the speed to something annoying/reasonable like 3-4kph. tourists constantly blasting by people on the sidewalk, it’s not surprising to me that this sort of thing happens.
Re:Firefox update added more sponsored content on new-tab page on Tuesday September 10, 2024 @01:38AM (#41497473)

Re:Apple iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max on Monday September 09, 2024 @03:11PM (#41492378)
it is likely that they are disabling it in software as it is only missing on the product page for the usa

Re:Freetube is the best way to watch YouTube on Saturday August 31, 2024 @11:02PM (#41413906)
Oh no, not a DMCA violation
Which carrier? Presumably they’re an MVNO? That price is what I’m looking for.

Re:You Need a Backup Bank on Friday June 28, 2024 @04:33PM (#40824985)
Who uses cards anymore? I don't even carry a wallet. Everything has been tap to pay on phones for years now.
i left a high paying tech job in san francisco, mostly because san francisco is a terrible place to live and i hated the constant tech culture. i took a 60% pay cut (even more when factoring in equity) and moved to a smaller city in canada. quality of life is significantly improved, and with the raises i’ve gotten over the years i’m living a very very comfortable life
Re:Linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky dies at age 95 on Tuesday June 18, 2024 @04:42PM (#40722028)
the link also contains no content whatsoever. there is no article, only links to other parts of the website
i’d guess that a very very very large majority of people don’t know or care what RCS is. i certainly don’t. i can’t even remember the last time i used an sms or mms. most likely people use whatsapp or telegram or signal or whatever if they’re not using imessage
