That it has a name and a number, but it doesn't say what the differentiation is.
Gemma = small model
Gemini = big model
Gemini 4 = latest model.
Gemini 4 Aragon = ??
Gemini 4 Carbon = ??

Is it a variant of Argon? A different model? The next version? It seems like this is a separate class (like Anthropic's Mythos).
anyway, its needlessly confusing.
If its just tedious, I bet there is room for agentic/automation to keep things tidy.
alfred and quicksilver etc. all work surprisingly well.
Let's assume for a second that the intelligence is there and these models really are great. Would it make sense to hire CTO of some big-tech company to do code reviews for your startup? Feels kind of like overkill to me. Code review is not about more intelligence. To me, it's about more cultural context. And all things equal, what difference would the model make, at anything above sonnet5 medium level?
"That's why all the work we do in growth is justified. All the questionable contact importing practices. All the subtle language that helps people stay searchable by friends. All of the work we do bring more communication in. The work we will likely have to do in China some day. All of it."
BOZ. Meta's current CTO. Not too long ago.
lol no thanks. Even with a proven "superintelligence" A.I, I'm not giving Meta access to anything. And that says something coming from an ex-Meta engineer (Ig/whatsapp/fb).
Another option that works quite well is called FAFO. So, I'd say just publish it, and we'll see. Keep us posted!
from meta's own statement:
"The majority of the terms are required to remain in place for 10 years, but our Time Limit and Night Mode features will start with a five-year commitment. However, if industry peers sign on to the agreement, it will both extend this commitment to 10 years and prompt stronger default limits — reducing the Daily Limit to one hour per app and expanding Night Mode hours to 10:00 PM–7:00 AM (up from midnight–6:00 AM)."
I'm at loss for words at how shitty this paragraph reads. If anyone has any hope that Meta (and the rest) are even slightest concerned about the problem at hand (mental health of children), then they're very dim.
Meta literally goals on creating high-quality teen producers and consumers. Every single experiment, every single project is optimizing for that.
At least now its clear that behind the fancy marketing, its all "just business" for them and if they could, they'd sell the kids' soul to create "more shareholder value"
Hmm... interesting. previously this was annas-archive.pk, now its on gl domain. What happened?
I don't think most of it has anything to do with intelligence and what I need the AI to do. In our own Claude.md files, we aggressively cut down on things that are irrelevant. Claude code has rules/ feature. Most of the content of Opus 5's system prompt can probably live in a rule or a progressively disclosed file (e.g. when asked about Mythos, read [md file link].).
In my personal experience, the claude.md file heavily influences the LLM's responses. It makes judgement from any and all information you give it, and try to tailor the response to fit the stereotype it gave you. After deleting my claude.md file (ironically, on the advise of Boris), Claude Opus 5's language slop issues drastically went down.
> Claude avoids saying "genuinely", "honestly", or "straightforward". Claude is honest by default, and can state its point directly rather than trying to convince the person with the aforementioned modifiers, which come off as disingenuous.
And honestly, that's the most useless thing in Claude.md file because literally every paragraph has an "honestly" in it!
* No one, not even E. B. White wrote the final document in a single pass. With dynamic workflows, you can now implement a writer's workflow.
* Opus pays more attention. So anything in your Claude.md, your code's claude.md, in Claude Desktop, the customizations, even your name, will be used as context. If Claude knows you are a mechanical engineer and trying to write code, it will try to write code and explain it to you in some stereotypical way you did not expect.
* There are problems that require horizontal scaling and not vertical, even in intelligence. If I want to serve tea to 200 people at my home, I just need 10 decent adults, not Gordon Ramsey. So if your problems demand horizontal scaling, a dynamic workflow with Sonnet 5 medium with 200K context window will be more productive than Opus 5 max at 1M token context window.
Kudos to France. But the problem isn't telemarketing calls. It's the wholesale grab-fest of phone numbers from every.damn.nook.and.crany of the US soil. Hospitals, Car dealers, dentists, vets, brokerages, title offices... literally EVERY one of them is leaking YOUR information to everyone in the world.
within a week of closing a deal on my house i get a scam paper mail that almost looked legit asking me to pay $100 to get the title documents for my house. There aren't that many parties involved in the sale.. and its one of them (or all of them) broke the trust and bartered my information.
nearly all of them are uploading their contact list to meta and google.
THIS practice has to stop.
Why is "12. Enhance Virtual Reality" in there? T_T
Not buying it. In the end, OpenAI will throw these people under the bus and settle out.
I'm not Apple's biggest fan either (I got super upset when they conveniently wiped out all information about the person comiting suicide in one of their conference rooms and TMZ caught the police line and the sherif said "there is a gun, next to a dead person, we can't say much at the moment" and that was it). But it is unlikely that Apple would depriortize its brand on a fake story.
So excited to see what this dream team cooks!
At first sight, it looks super cool. Kudos for pulling this off. At closer look, feels very overwhelming. The claude tone doesn't help ease the nerves either. The text version is too verbose.
This is cool, but I wish we could stop building landing pages to assess the intelligence of these models. There is much more to them than that. There are infinite number of complicated things that require a crap-ton of intelligence (biological or digital). The most fascinating of these for me these days is large scale migrations. Projects that are so ginormous and risky that many teams have either given up on them, or don't get funding. But with models like Opus, those projects are now within reach. What's MORE fascinating is that leadership is now asking if we can use opus models to get the refactor/migration done. This is the opposite of what has been happening for decades. Its so hard to make a convincing and affordable business case for large scale refactoring or migrations.
absolutely love it! Gorgeous drawing, meticulous detail.
1. been using sudoku.com's app for a while and have some reservations with it, and a few new ideas that i wanted to try, so building a new sodoku app. this is in its earliest stages. Have a prototype to test ideas i want to build in.
2. Continuing work on Standly, a standing desk app for iOS and Mac (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/standly-standing-desk-timer/id...). I just grossed $1000 total on the app and get few customer feedbacks a week which is very exciting.
3. Almost finalized the first episode of my labor economics youtube channel, hand animated by a team of amazing artists. Looking to build it into a sustaining channel.
4. Building a server-driven UI framework at work with Go and OpenAPI on server side, swift and kotlin on client side.
Enjoyed it until the first emdash (was half expecting it to arrive anyway). Sorry.
its not a misconception. As an advertiser, I can go use meta's tools, target people specifically, and show them ads on meta's platform. While i don't get the CSV dump, but if i can target people with my message, its the same thing. Meta keeps the data AND the distribution. Data brokers have the data but no distribution of attention for that data. Newspapers have distribution but don't have the granualar data for direct targeting.
There are many, many use cases of having a CSV dump of the data, but in reality, all of it boils down to either reselling the data, or marketing a product to the demographic in the data.
The 3rd use case is that of palantir but let's not get distracted.
So, meta is not selling data is like saying netflix is not selling movies (its actually buying them). Technically true, but a shallow understanding.
which email client do you use?
The overbearing of gmail and the perpetual tech issue with Apple Mail made me want to look for a new email client software. I landed on Spark Mail and i Nope'd the heck out of it very quickly.
There is no guarantee today that any software manufacturer will not slap AI whenever, wherever they can.
I want stuff to work like linux commands. Do one thing well. Work well with other processes over a standard protocol.
If you ever find a good email client @speckx let me know. Something that does not get in my way, can work on mac/windows/iphone/android, can work offline, can do basic things like search predictably (I'm look at you apple mail) and (FFS!) does not show me random unread badges on folders where everything is already read (You again, apple mail).
found a good no BS collection of tips from a friend using AI in legacy production codebases

Mad respect for his work. Love his writing. But no, i'm not buying the story of going offline, especially not with a trending hackernews post and a typewritten letter to the internet. When one is done with something, they're done. Cold turkey. like "F
ck this sht, i'm out". If someone notices that you are missing, they'll ask, and you can give them your spiel about being AI-Amish or whatever.
Even if you ignore all that, I think you just need a break, rest, recover, find something else in life and move on. The whole thing about "life was better in the past" is just plain non-sense, simply because the past, for all we know, extends to infinity. Why 1980 and not 1890? or 1590? the inquisition? maybe the crusades? or maybe the pharohs? If you believe in biblical tales then how about being in the great flood? or being one of the pharoh soldiers that die after the sea moses split closes on them? or one of the skulls in gengis khan's tower of skulls?
You can read Steven Pinker's "Better angels of our nature" and get a good sense of how far along have we come.
in a good way or bad way? in my experience going back to 4.6 was a breath of fresh air again. Opus 4.7 for some reason was "suffocating". Too obnoxious, tried too hard to impress and used exxagerated/pompous language.
