A website that lets you match watches with different straps to get a feel for how it'll look.

Mixing and matching watches with different straps is something that I really enjoy doing. It's not often easy to tell ahead of time whether the combination will work.

Hello! Is this US remote only or global remote?
Re:Ask HN: Does this web automation tool exist? on Thursday November 23, 2023 @07:14AM (#38391928)
Nice, I'm going to look into playwright, looks promising.

I've seen a couple of automated test frameworks. I'm not looking to test thou, I'm looking at way I can quickly automate my daily work. There's a healthy overlap between what test frameworks offer and what I want, so that's probably my best starting point.

Ask HN: Does this web automation tool exist?

Hi HN, I'm looking to automate some web workflows. Here's an example of a what the tool would do.1. Open a new tab, navigate to my builds page. Select the latest successful build, and click on the link. Copy the url to the latest build artifact.2. Open a new tab, go to my deploy tool. Paste in the artifact link from the earlier step. Fill in some other values in a form, and hit submit.I know...

Ask HN: How does your company maintain documentation about architecture?

I work at a large company with hundreds of microservices. There are numerous architecture diagrams distributed across different wiki pages. These are often outdated or wrong. There's no good way to search for the architecture of a component. It's not easy to tell at a glance what other services a service interacts with.Would love to hear if any company has really nailed a system for how to...

Re:Ask HN: What are some good keyboards? on Thursday March 03, 2022 @10:00PM (#30550122)
Been using my ErgodoxEZ for the last 6 years. Fantastic keyboard, great ergonomics, rock solid build quality. Pricy but very worth imo.

If I were buying today, I'd buy a Moonlander, the newer version of the Ergodox.

I use the IdeaVIM plugin. I do "vib" (visual inside braces) to select everything within the parentheses. Added benefit of it works in lots of other places as well (terminal etc).
For Jetbrains IDEs, I've installed the IdeaVIM plugin and that's been a huge boost to productivity. I get the best of both worlds, the IDEs amazing tooling but also VIM's navigation which I find very intuitive.
Re:The human tendency to over-water plants on Sunday October 03, 2021 @09:49AM (#28737122)
I do that quite a bit, but I have pots which are 12 inches deep. I want to know when the bottom has dried out.
Re:The human tendency to over-water plants on Sunday October 03, 2021 @04:33AM (#28735512)
I agree that watering only when the soil is completely dry is best. It's really hard to tell when that is with large plants thou. I have a massive monstera and a mid sized ficus. I can't pick these up to check their weight. Why are there no smart plant meters? Something I push into the soil and sends me a notification when the soil has completely dried out?

I've used those analog two prong moisture meters, but I'm looking for something that can just sit in the pot permanently..

Re:What the Cat Knows (2020) on Thursday September 23, 2021 @03:54AM (#28626398)
``` There is a type of flourishing available to a cat that is only rarely available to us. A human is never simply what she is, but is always striving to become something she is, as yet, not. This is the result of a self-image – a conception of herself and what her life should be – which, when unrealised, can occasion frustration and despair. ```
This part of the article jumped out at me. I spent about 5 years of my life on a start-up that eventually failed. I now have a pretty comfy tech job, and definitely earn enough money to be comfortable.
But there is always this restlessness that I feel. I learnt a lot of things in my 5 years, and feel I could do a better job if I were to start another company. I almost feel like those 5 years would be wasted if I don't take what I learnt and put it into my next company.
Re:Show HN: Tubenotes.xyz – Annotate and Loop Videos on Wednesday June 02, 2021 @08:40AM (#27367988)
Oh this is very interesting. I'm going to take some reference from this. We're not trying to do the exact same thing, but there's definitely an overlap.
Re:Show HN: Tubenotes.xyz – Annotate and Loop Videos on Sunday May 30, 2021 @10:52AM (#27333660)
Hi, I've mostly learnt guitar by going through JustinGuitar's excellent videos.
I put this together because I felt I needed a way to jump back to sections that I want to rehearse or reference.
Hope it can be of use to you too, and also happy to hear brutal feedback.
Re:Ask HN: Best Office Chair? on Monday March 30, 2020 @03:44AM (#22726001)
Love the Steelcase Leap as well, the chair has all the right adjustments for me and feels very sturdy and well built. If shop around you can usually find these available second hand.
I have two and spent 350 each on them.
Thanks for the feedback, will add that to the backlog!
Working on my site that lets you annotate and skip around youtube videos - tubenotes.xyz
I built it mostly to organize and catalog guitar tutorials that I learn from.
I learn songs for the guitar primarily by watching youtube videos. I built this tool to organize these videos and to let me skip around to the the exact bits that I'm learning and practicing.
I'm sure there are other uses for this. Would love to hear feedback!
Re:Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on? on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @01:41AM (#22178067)
I'm working on a personal project that allows you to add notes to youtube videos, and be able to skip quickly to specific sections.
I started this because I'm learning guitar mostly from YouTube, and I find myself constantly seeking videos to specific sections.
I'll probably launch the site on ShowHN soon. Feel free to DM me if you can think of other uses for this, or if you're interested to know when this launches.
Re:Unboxing Rose: Not your typical unboxing. (Fiction) on Sunday January 06, 2019 @01:27AM (#18836908)
This reminds me of Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age: Or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer. It's a great book and highly recommended for anyone that enjoys fantasy.
I wonder if in the future education will move towards individualized teaching based on systems like this, where a child is free to explore his interests.
Oh my god that pepsi document.
It's real? Was someone actually paid to produce that document?
As I scrolled downwards I just kept getting more and more convinced that it's some kind of ridiculous surrealistic joke thing.
Re:Ask HN: What are your hobbies? on Sunday June 24, 2018 @09:59AM (#17386582)
Man tell me about it. The reason I asked this question was because I'm feeling like I'm spending way too much time on YouTube. I'm even completely aware that some of the things I watch are really just trash.
Re:Ask HN: What are your hobbies? on Sunday June 24, 2018 @09:58AM (#17386577)
I started learning Guitar specifically because I was spending all my time in front a screen.
It's helped a bit, but a I also spend a ton of time watching guitar YouTube tutorials to learn things.
How are you learning Piano? Are you self taught? I'm learning Guitar from Justin Guitar and the quality of the instruction blows me away.
Re:Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect? on Friday May 11, 2018 @05:50AM (#17046025)
1. Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind
Mostly the bits about how our society is mostly built on collective fictions.
2. Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse
I remember being very moved reading this, but I can't quite remember why.
Looks like it's time to re-read it.
I went to your website, and I can't figure out what your product is or does. I had to click in to individuals before I figured out what it does.
Why not put "BeeLine Reader makes reading on-screen easier, faster, and more enjoyable. We use a simple cognitive trick — an eye-guiding color gradient — to pull your eyes from one line to the next." on your front page?
Maybe you guys have already done some kind of testing and found out that the current layout is optimal?
Anecdote: I used to work from home and pretty much sat down the whole day. I would still go for a run once or twice a week, but I would quickly experience a sharp pain in my lower back that made it really hard to run. Some Googling led me to believe that my tight hip flexors might be causing my back pain, and that sitting down all day could lead to tight hip flexors. I've since started working for a couple of hours per day at a ghetto standing desk and my back pains are pretty much gone.
Another thing that I really highly recommend is Joe DeFranco's stetching programme, Limber 11 (https://youtu.be/FSSDLDhbacc). You can do the whole thing in about 10 minutes, and it leaves your whole body feeling nice and relaxed.
