Re:After automation: Solo founding will be the default on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:23PM (#50187841)
thanks for the kind words, and i agree with your comment about PMF. i'm grateful to be off the treadmill this time.

a couple of additional insights i gained:

- don't start a new company at the same time you have a newborn baby. it's an impossible balance.

- raise a little more money than you think you need to extend your runway. i should have continued fundraising but was anxious to get to building.

Re:After automation: Solo founding will be the default on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:09PM (#50187661)
> With solo as the default, the main reason startups die will be loneliness

i'm a solo-founder whose business was likely included in his research and was dissolved this morning.

we ran out of runway while trying to find PMF. i think that's why most solo companies will die, not loneliness.

Re:US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution on Sunday September 20, 2026 @06:25PM (#49780746)
The 2024 plan would have reduced annual CO₂ emissions by about 533 million metric tons by 2040. That's roughly equivalent to taking half of all U.S. passenger cars and light-duty trucks off the road.

With the rollback, that reduction will no longer occur. So, this is significant.

Re:US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution on Sunday September 20, 2026 @03:56PM (#49779437)
you're comparing years, not standards. i hope you're just foolish and not intentionally disingenuous.

"The 2024 standards required existing coal plants and new gas plants to capture 90 percent of carbon emissions or shut down by 2039, which would have reduced carbon pollution by an estimated 1.38 billion metric tons through 2047"

Before the 2024 Carbon Pollution Standards, the federal limits were much weaker—and for existing power plants, there was effectively no operative federal CO₂ limit at all.

i don't think so - the ascent looked good. i don't think they need to put the ship on another suborbital trajectory because the booster landing burn failed. also, i don't think this impacts prop transfer or ship catch - both are separate problems.
Looks useful.

It'd be interesting if you put some of the bible in there and published any continuity errors. Would be great press, regardless.

Shocked? DOGE defunded USAID and children's cancer research funding. And have you read his twitter feed lately or seen this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VfYjPzj1Xw

I agree that we don't judge his work based strictly on its merits but that's consequence a that he's created by his behavior, and I wouldn't call it brigading.

The fact that you're shocked is silly.

Scout is the best tool for finding activities for your child.I built this to solve my personal pain point.Currently the best solutions are wordpress blogs where people manually aggregate this information. But human-run blogs can't possibly find every event, they don't know what my child's interests are or what's near my home, so my wife & I would spend hours just learning what we can do...

i wonder if this is how engineers felt when the first electronic calculators came out and engineers stopped doing math by hand.

did we feel uneasy that a new generation of builders didn't have to solve equations by hand because a calculator could do them?

i'm not sure it's the same analogy but in some ways it holds.

Re:Trying out Zed after more than a decade of Vim/Neovim on Friday January 24, 2025 @07:39PM (#42818342)
>I love (Neo)Vim. Like I wrote earlier, it's been my primary editor for the past 15 years. What I don't love is all the configuration that goes into it before I can use it to start writing code.

this resonates with me. i've spent so much time configuring neovim in the terminal (kitty) and i've never had everything work 100% of the time. simple things just like seeing an entire typescript error are challenging to get working. those errors just continue on one line outside of the screen.

with LLM's the tradeoff tipped in the favor of cursor with the neovim extension.

> 2. It just works

so i switched to cursor last week from neovim in the terminal and this is how i feel. but, i'm not going to invest more time to check out Zed now that i just got cursor set up the way i like it.

but it's great to see all the progress in IDE's lately.

Re:Show HN: LLMpeg on Saturday January 18, 2025 @05:15PM (#42751840)
i think this type of interaction is the future in lots of areas. i can imagine we replace API's completely with a single endpoint where you hit it up with a description of what you want back. like, hit up 'news.ycombinator.com/api' with "give me all the highest rated submissions over the past week about LLMs". a server side LLM translates that to SQL, executes the query, returns the results.

this approach is broadly applicable to lots of domains just like FFMpeg. very very cool to see things moving in this direction.

how long ago was the last time you checked?

expo has solved the native dependencies issue, and it's a fantastic way to build an app.

this is one of the few hills i'm willing to die on. expo is great for the RN community.

also you can download my RN expo app here: www.shopcats.app.

Re:Show HN: Copy React code from any site on Saturday July 09, 2022 @09:06PM (#32040896)
I don't disagree - write your own components in most cases.

Your original comment stated, as fact, "you'll get yourself or your employer sued, and/or your work pulled off the internet against your will."

You're right that suits do happen, and while there is a grain of truth in what you said, stating it the way you did is just too bold in my opinion. I highly doubt the individual developer would be sued. How would a company seeking damages know who made the git commit so they could target the developer?

The clarification in your reply about copying being willful, profitable and profit-damaging is where things start to make sense. And if you had said something along the lines of that, I wouldn't have replied and would have found myself in agreement.

Re:Show HN: Copy React code from any site on Saturday July 09, 2022 @04:42PM (#32039112)
Two absurd claims: 1. Getting sued 2. Getting your work pulled off the internet

You say that you or your employer would be sued if you did this. Going through a legal battle over some copied HTML, CSS & JavaScript is expensive, distracting and time consuming. You'd first get a cease and desist letter. Who has the time or energy to sue over this?

Getting your work pulled off the internet against your will. How would that happen? Have you heard of the pirate bay? There's no off-switch because you used someones react component.

You might not like this tool or feel it facilitates behavior you consider unethical, and I get that, but these claims you made are absurd.
