NVIDIA, Disney Research and Google DeepMind release Newton, an open-source, extensible physics engine to advance robot learning and development. Compatible with MuJoCo Playground or NVIDIA Isaac Lab, it is an open-source, unified framework for robot learning.

Apparently mostly back office
Getting that sort of range is not common. Most of it is line of sight. Sat comms work far at sea where VHF is useless. With ARES, you are relying on an inconsistent volunteer network with spotty results by location and time.

I'm a licensed ham and have worked emergency events. I would not rely upon this if my life depended on it.

I took their in-person class in Ada, OK back in the day. Highly recommended the training material. https://www.advancedpilot.com/

They have a great test bed for validating their science.

note that words have special pronunciation such as kehBEC not keeBEC. Pilots also pronounce numbers differently Tree (3) or Fow Er (4)

All pilots, private and commercial, have to learn this. I taught it to my kids driving to school when they were in elementary school.

Your comment belittles the hard work Vint puts in every day. He could easily retire but is still amazingly energetic and engaged. Downvoted.
Re:Early Retirement (2006) on Wednesday August 04, 2021 @12:17PM (#28062807)
AFAIK, Philip is not really retired. He does a lot of expert witness work these days https://philip.greenspun.com/software/expert-witness

He teaches occasionally at Harvard, usually a short course. This is covered under the subsection "Teaching might be the answer."

Ham radio transmissions are not allowed to be encrypted per FAR 97.113(4). [1]

I suspect this is also a violation of FAR 97.113(3) "Communications in which the station licensee or control operator has a pecuniary interest, including communications on behalf of an employer"

I’ve seen Dan Bricklin in the local Whole Foods on several occasions. I want to yell out: “see that guy! He changed the world!” but then I let him pick an avocado in peace.
So is the only reason to change filters to avoid blockage and reduced airflow but not filtering capacity?
My comment isn’t about importance to society, it is about innovation for future contributions to society. I believe that ad tech has fueled more recent and greater potential contributions than law has, and therefore is more meritorious as a field for intelligent people entering their careeers.
That’s a very cynical comment. I recommend you examine the research and open source contributions Google has made to ML that have nothing to do with ads.
But ad optimization has led to many other technical innovations in ML and scalability. I don’t think the same can be said about law school.

Disclosure: work on ad tech at Google. Opinion my own.

Re:Why Zoom Chose Oracle on Thursday April 30, 2020 @01:31PM (#23033509)
As of April 29, Google Meet is now free, which is seemingly direct competition to Zoom, especially with the emphasis on security.

Opinion my own not Google's.

I’m deeply worried about the US food supply in 4-6 weeks time, not because of availability but because of a lack of healthy people to process, transport and distribute the food. Given the sorry state of migrant farm workers in the US [0], it won’t take much for infections to spread.

One of the books that most influenced my coding was Software Tools by Brian W. Kernighan, P.J. Plauger [0]. Even though I never used Ratfor, the clear descriptions were immensely useful.

Re:How to Respond to COVID-19 on Saturday February 29, 2020 @03:51AM (#22449685)
Marc Lipsitch, a Harvard epidemiologist, estimates that 40-70% of the adult world-wide population will be infected. [0]

Assuming a conservative 1% mortality rate, that would mean 30-50M deaths, a tragically huge number.

Well stated. The author also misses two other critical points: (1) accuracy is a poor measure of quality for non-numeric, classification type problems, (2) increasing model complexity has an asymptote in order to prevent overfitting. You can’t arbitrarily increase the number of weights and expect that the NN will continue to improve.
And CS109 which I used to TF: https://www.extension.harvard.edu/course-catalog/courses/crn...

Not sure where you got the $50k? Mine was significantly less like $25k, which is a great value for many of same classes as the College.

Re:Makani’s time as an “other bet” comes to an end on Tuesday February 18, 2020 @09:56PM (#22362691)
As a serial entrepreneur now Google employee, I think the bets have received too much funding. They seem like long term government research projects not scrappy startups trying to scale. Putting more rationality and business expectations is a good thing to determine the viability of some of the ideas.

Opinion my own, not Google’s.

Re:Ask HN: Which is the best book on nutrition? on Monday December 16, 2019 @06:26AM (#21802303)
Agreed. Eat to Live is the single best nutrition book I’ve read. He also continues [1] to be an active medical researcher and clinician. His diet is challenging to strictly follow but the results are very clear.
