Your revisionist history is another thing that makes me angry. Ruby and Python were getting popular long before Rails and Django came on the scene so before you go running your mouth about core people ignoring the needs of people you should think long and hard about subverting the needs of an entire community just so you can develop another web app.
Ruby is much more than Rails and I think it's a little sad that a large portion of the developer population has no idea that Ruby exists outside of Rails.
Re:Debating the Value of College in America on Wednesday June 01, 2011 @04:59AM (#2606558)
Human are associating machines. Learning requires a bit more because if it didn't then the AI problem would have been solved long ago by neural nets. What schools don't do well is teach people about meta-cognition which is how all learning really happens. Anyone can memorize a few facts and regurgitate opinions but few people can connect the dots and see the big picture by collating all the local pieces of information we are constantly bombarded with.
Re:Results for: Pick a number from 1 to 10 on Monday March 28, 2011 @04:38AM (#2377655)
I don't get it. How is the selector relevant to what people choose? You might as well have put a different colored rabbit somewhere on the page and measured responses that way.
Re:Amazon Terminates Illinois Affiliates on Friday March 11, 2011 @03:19AM (#2312639)
I don't see the point in punishing the affiliates or how the tax law makes any difference in how the affiliates get paid for generating sales.
Re:Charlie Brooker on Tuesday March 08, 2011 @04:49AM (#2300400)
Yup. Fixed.
Re:Should CS students be graded on performance? on Sunday March 06, 2011 @03:01AM (#2293756)
No. Stuff like this only comes with experience and it's more important to teach students about the fundamental and overarching themes of computer science than to pester them with optimization issues.
I have no problem with the mandate. It's the clear lack of competence in intelligence gathering that bothers me. Who honestly considers anything said on reddit to be of any significant value to state security matters? They might as well throw a dart on some board and make decisions that way if they are so desperate as to use postings from reddit.
All these goof-ups by the FBI don't paint a pretty picture about the agency at all and I'm surprised some news agency isn't up in arms about their funding and incompetence like they are with the teachers' unions.
Re:Breakup Notifier Shut Down By Facebook on Wednesday February 23, 2011 @02:53PM (#2255511)
This started to interfere with facebook's own stalking experience so they shut it down. Don't need to be a genius to figure out that out.
Re:You Owe it to Yourself to be Old-School on Tuesday February 22, 2011 @04:00AM (#2249275)
I think he's just saying develop better debugging skills, the stuff about the good old days is irrelevant.
Re:Ask HN: Lying on your resume on Sunday February 20, 2011 @05:40AM (#2241602)
It probably happens all the time and you are just wasting your time even thinking about it.
Re:I finally understand why I'm not allowed to use Lisp on Sunday February 20, 2011 @05:24AM (#2241582)
I'm waiting for perl 6.
Re:Show HN: Launched my side project: Goalfinch on Thursday February 17, 2011 @03:10AM (#2230265)
Incorporate twitter login or some other OpenID provider.
This is really cool. I really like his take on lambda being ^.
Re:Dear Google: please let me ban sites from results on Thursday January 06, 2011 @09:40AM (#2075428)
I'm not sure how this would be implemented. Where would the blacklist be held and how would it influence the search results? I know that they already do a lot of search customization but most of it is just aggregate statistical computations. It's not that they return results specifically tailored to you but more like results tailored to a very fuzzy average version of you. A blacklist seems way too specific to each user to be susceptible to meaningful aggregate statistical operations like spam filtering which is one of the reasons that spam filtering in google is so good. Each user contributes something and everyone benefits. I don't see that happening with blacklists. I think to make it worthwhile they would need to figure out how to feed the information from blacklists into providing more meaningful results for everyone.
Re:Breaking a WoW addiction on Friday December 31, 2010 @07:15AM (#2055224)
Why the fuck are you getting upvotes? Your hijacking of the points and arguments he makes doesn't even warrant a response.
Re:Important Safety Notice from WakeMate on Friday December 31, 2010 @07:12AM (#2055217)
That's a shitty justification for causing irreparable harm simply because you need to make a buck.
Re:Important Safety Notice from WakeMate on Friday December 31, 2010 @05:33AM (#2055081)
So you were basically saving $180 in exchange for a more polluted planet. Great exchange if I ever saw one.
Re:All Household Appliances Should Be Made By Apple on Monday December 27, 2010 @03:28AM (#2042092)
Horrible article. The whole thing is just a plug for a bunch of kitchen products. Why would you post this?
Re:Facebook intern visualizes friendships, draws world map on Tuesday December 14, 2010 @03:51AM (#2003575)
So where's Kevin Bacon?
I don't get this facebook thing just like I didn't get AOL and myspace before it.
Re: Why I’m Not On Facebook on Saturday September 25, 2010 @05:22AM (#1726643)
Nope, I left it a while back and I'm not missing anything but then again I have always valued face to face contact above any other and I consider facebook to be a very poor emulation of a social experience.
Re:Laid back men considered more attractive on Monday September 20, 2010 @08:34AM (#1708543)
Cortisol eh? So Buddhist monks must be topping "100 sexiest men alive" list.
Re:Google Instant Proves Google's Design Process is Broken on Thursday September 16, 2010 @05:46AM (#1697340)
Something similar happens with realism in cartoons. Up to a certain point of realism people react favorably but then there is a point when people no longer like what they are seeing. So if you just interpolate the test results with shaving off seconds it sounds really good on paper from an engineering standpoint but in practice it is something else. Shaving off seconds after you press enter I think is a good thing but shaving off seconds while you are typing is a completely different thing. The instant thing doesn't make any sense to me and all it does is just add visual clutter. Plus I'm not entirely convinced google added instant for the benefit of the consumer. What were they trying to do, save an extra keystroke? All instant does is make ads pop up sooner and I think that was the real motivation behind implementing it.
Does Siegler ever make any points or does he always ramble on like this? Is he upset that people are buying android based phones or is it that the carriers are customizing the os too much and google won't force any strict guidelines? That was the appeal of android from the beginning. Basically anyone could take the os as a starting point and do some cool stuff with it. The fact that the carriers are using their monopoly to force certain conditions on their users is not really the fault of whoever produced the os which happens to be google in this case.
