Ask HN: Why is the MS default: No, remove the files?

I might put off the decision making of the Document Recovery task too often, but as a result I've noticed how often I have to thoughtfully select 'Yes' before closing Excel/Word. If the default were 'Yes, I want to view this files later." then I could just click OK.This default seems to go against the norm in software of making the user actively select delete/remove.

Re:Light Pollution Map on Friday April 23, 2021 @01:06PM (#26916806)
I love this sort of thing, but like many heatmaps, I wish it had a color blind toggle.
Re:FBI File for Russell Tyrone Jones (Ol' Dirty Bastard) on Monday February 04, 2019 @08:09AM (#19075997)
I have to wonder if this is on the front page as part of a marketing campaign for the new Showtime Docuseries.

But when you’re in advertising all that matters are the results.
Very interesting read, but as more of an analyst, I kept waiting for the ‘meaning.’ Maybe I missed it, but for anyone else who may be considering reading this, it is more about ‘giving business structure’ to analytic events.

Good article none the less.

Re:Waze for Android Auto on Wednesday July 26, 2017 @02:45PM (#14858965)
I bought my Toyota for the motor, so I didn't pay a lot of attention at the time of purchase. I wish I had though. Entune is absolutely terrible. I'm still mind boggled that a quality manufacturer like Toyota would allow such a terrible piece of engineering in their vehicles.
Re:The Holder Report on Uber on Tuesday June 13, 2017 @02:56PM (#14547522)
Unfortunate as it may be, sometimes in large corporations, it takes paying an outsider to identify and document something, before anything will be done about it.
Re:The baby MRI: shrinking tech to help save newborn lives on Friday January 27, 2017 @11:30AM (#13500700)
What an interesting take away. This is why I like online forums, because I would have never expected such a response.

For better or worse, I read the headline and hoped someone had made some progress that would make those dealing with ill babies, lives just a little easier.

Re:Proposed server purchase for GitLab.com on Sunday December 11, 2016 @06:33PM (#13154202)
Think much harder about power and cooling. A few points:

I've only ever built desktop machines, and this top comment drew a surprising parallel to most help me with my desktop build type posts. Granted, I'm sure as you dig deeper, the reasoning may be much different, but myself being ignorant about a proper server build, it was somehow reassuring to see power and cooling at the top!

This list of known browsers(cookies) would be worth well over $1mil to US advertisers right? I can only assume they're selling it, according to the privacy policy.
Re:How we use Slack in our family on Monday February 01, 2016 @03:15PM (#11015041)
Someone at work was recently giving me the slack pitch, and mentioned the cool bot that be configured to announce people, answer questions etc...

It made me very nostalgic for my old IRC friends, both people and eggdrop bots alike.

Re:HTT Breaks Ground to Make Hyperloop a Reality on Wednesday January 20, 2016 @04:03PM (#10941325)
As a Carolinian I can't help feeling left out when I look at their proposed map. Even if this is just fiction at this point, I would be interested in hearing their reason for completely bypassing both Carolinas.
Re:Zenefits asks court to drop ADP lawsuit on Tuesday July 07, 2015 @03:30PM (#9847563)
How else would she show her appreciation for all of these emails between the two parties?
Re:Stuff in Space on Monday July 06, 2015 @10:00PM (#9843240)
This is just beautiful. Definitely put all of those things in a new perspective for me. Well done.
Re:Logitech K480 – Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard on Wednesday September 03, 2014 @08:12AM (#8262563)
Very cool and useful product. I can't help but feel like I'm in some kind of cycle though, because I felt the same way about a KVM Switch 20 years ago.
"...almost certainly safe" Is that similar to "definitely maybe"?
This is awesome. Although an excellent resource, there are many times I get very distracted using Google to get this kind of information. This could help me stay on task.
Re:How the Recession Reshaped the Economy, in 255 Charts on Friday June 06, 2014 @07:59AM (#7857342)
If you can make it to the bottom, I found those simple charts, segmented by Industry, the most interesting and easiest to digest.
Re:Odoo: The new OpenERP on Thursday May 15, 2014 @12:22PM (#7750412)
OpenERP could've really benefited from some usability expertise, and if this site is any indication, Odoo may suffer the same fate. If you're going to put this much time/money into a new brand, how could you miss so badly?

In my experience with OpenERP, the end users always took a back seat to the developers. Granted, ERP software is inherently complicated, but with each new version you could tell they made an attempt at a simplified interface and never hit the mark.

Re:Regex Golf on Friday December 20, 2013 @08:48AM (#6941322)
I have the most trouble with regex, and something about seeing my matches as I type made this incredibly useful for me!

Ask HN: Suggested reading for basic statistical analysis of web analytics

I was hoping to get some suggested sites or books I could use to do more with our Analytics. I do not have a statistics background, but I work in an area where ideas backed up by data get a lot further than just an idea. I've been doing the best I can with excel's basic formulas to try and gain better insights from our Analytics, but I feel like I could do more than just averages and such,...

Unfortunately, the only exchange I've tried to access, out of pure curiosity, times out.

Looks like they're using Amazon AWS

Ask HN: Hacker side of Insurance Exchanges going live today?

I'd love to hear from anyone that has been involved in the development of these new exchanges. One of those posts on the technology stack or high scalability posts would be great. I've read so much about them and the influx of people their expecting, and I'm tired of the major media spin on their flaws. Would love some first hand material out there, but I haven't seen anything.

I still prefer IRC over all of those Instant Messaging options.
These organizations are requesting either 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(6) exemption in order to collaboratively develop new software. The members of these organizations are usually the for-profit business or for-profit support technicians of the software.[1]

#slicehost on freenode. I know the company doesn't exist anymore, but I learned so much about setting up my first debain box from these guys/gals. It is still going strong 6 years later.

I can't put my finger on it, but this app makes me very sad.
Re:Parse Launches Web Apps with the Express Web Framework on Tuesday June 04, 2013 @02:47PM (#5821348)
Can someone translate this for me? I'm not sure what it would mean to have 'Parse Hosting', 'Cloud Code', etc... I've only recently started to learn nodejs and didn't have any trouble pushing my tutorial made app to Heroku. Is this just an alternative to Heroku that hosts your app?
