No, it's not
Re:Can “Indie” Social Media Save Us? on Sunday May 19, 2019 @12:49AM (#19951507)
Mastodon is AGPLv3 so there is nothing to buy.

Most of the time you'd come across a post on a different instance in your home feed which just takes a click to reply to, the same as any other post.
Re:Improving support for adult content on Mastodon on Monday May 06, 2019 @12:27AM (#19836880)
> Nobody thinks of Mastodons when thinking of any form of communication, but we all hear birds tweeting every day and have been used in real life to send messages

This seems like backwards reasoning. If you named a new platform after pigeons, which were actually used for transmitting information, you'd get critics saying "It's so archaic, nobody has used pigeons for 80 years!" Birds carrying messages is just as "extinct" of a metaphor as Mastodons are as an animal.

What's not cute about elephants? Especially fluffy ones?

It's ActivityPub, not OStatus!
Re:Mastodon 2.7: Highlights from the changelog on Sunday January 20, 2019 @05:43PM (#18956098)
If you decide to change your managed host, you take your domain name and database with you, so outwardly, nothing changes and you lose nothing.

Re:Ask HN: Did you delete your Facebook account in 2018? on Sunday December 23, 2018 @07:42PM (#18749453)
Yes, I deleted mine! Deleted my Twitter account too
Re:Deploying Mastodon on Digital Ocean on Thursday November 15, 2018 @05:24AM (#18458211)
FYI there's a more recent, and much more in-depth official installation manual: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/administration/installation/

The documentation also includes various guides on horizontal scaling, using pgBouncer etc.

Re:OAuth for the Open Web on Saturday July 07, 2018 @07:19PM (#17481225)
Unless there's gonna be native browser support, the different websites you visit won't be able to know which accounts you've recently used elsewhere.
Re:OAuth for the Open Web on Saturday July 07, 2018 @06:42PM (#17481077)
OpenID doesn't provide API access like OAuth does, does it?
Re:Why ActivityPub is the future on Wednesday June 27, 2018 @01:18PM (#17409972)
What would be a better name?
Re:Why ActivityPub is the future on Wednesday June 27, 2018 @11:20AM (#17408850)
Then your account is gone, but your friends on other servers are still where they were. With backup/import tools you can reconnect with them from a new account easily.
Re:Why ActivityPub is the future on Wednesday June 27, 2018 @11:18AM (#17408830)
From the thread:

>I don't expect any major changes are needed for compliance, which is why it's been pretty low priority. it's just a matter of getting a document together that better informs admins.

Mastodon has all the features needed for compliance, and does not collect or store any data that's not for its primary purpose.

Re:How to become a successful artist on Mastodon on Sunday June 24, 2018 @06:09PM (#17388647)
Bug found and fixed and patched!
Re:How to become a successful artist on Mastodon on Sunday June 24, 2018 @05:42PM (#17388537)
I checked and I noticed that the pictures in the embedded toots don't show up on Chrome. Investigating.
Re:How to become a successful artist on Mastodon on Sunday June 24, 2018 @05:25PM (#17388471)
Thank you! Hugo is awesome.
I'm seeing the opposite, as independent platforms like Mastodon won't be able to implement content ID they won't be complying with this new law, which means it'll potentially become legally dangerous to run Mastodon within the EU. It's like the EU parliament is bent on giving all the cards to Google and Facebook and shutting down European competition...
Re:$1M to build decentralized social networks on Friday May 11, 2018 @12:15PM (#17048520)
I built Mastodon alone for a year for like $600/mo until it got popular. Now I'm getting more ($3k/mo from Patreon) but I don't think I'm even anywhere close to hitting $100k. So it's possible :P
Re:Friendica – A Decentralized Social Network on Thursday April 05, 2018 @08:18AM (#16764077)
Friendica is part of the fediverse, that is, "federated universe." The model of decentralization is "federation" here. Friendica is interoperable with Mastodon, GNU social, etc.
There are more languages in the world than English, not supporting Unicode is not an option for most.
>The elephant in the room is not Facebook.

Can you really say "elephant in the room" in a thread about social media and not mention Mastodon[1]? That's a facebook rival that's not staying mum...
