Re:The Ashley Book of Knots on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @11:35PM (#37684905)
if the clove hitch is tied near the end of the rope, you can take the tail and tie an overhand knot with it around the standing line to back it up
Re:The Ashley Book of Knots on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @11:29PM (#37684862)
The application and material of ropes has changed over time, specifically ABOK was published just before the advent of Nylon ropes.
i could be wrong but i owned a minilogue and don't think it supports microtuning. only some really fanxy synths do.
Re:CDC gets list of forbidden words on Friday December 15, 2017 @10:59PM (#15937509)
what about apple bananas? what about intersex people? do you consider them "mentally ill". if someone feels happier to transition, why does that bother you?

datamyne, importgenius, panjive, 52wmb are all services that collect shipping manifest information and make it searchable
Statamic is dope! not sure its open source though, i think it requires a license.
Re:Identify Plants with an App on Tuesday April 25, 2017 @10:28AM (#14193793)
or go get a book on plants and you will be able to identify them pretty easy. The guidebooks ask you questions to narrow it down (how many petals does the flower have? for example). you dont need any knowledge going into using one, and you'll learn to observe and appreciate plants more as well through the process of IDing! newcombs wildflower is the go-to for beginners on the east coast but there are many.
Re:TidalCycles – A language for the Live Coding pattern on Friday March 24, 2017 @09:19AM (#13948690)
Tidal has a MIDI add on which makes playing with MIDI instruments quite fun! I get patterns of notes playing and then fiddle on the knobs of the synths. So much fun :-)
Before the most recent update, it was updated April 10th. So 121 days between updates. At the same rate, it would be updated next around December 21st. But yeah that is a strange tweet, and lack of tweets since is also strange.

Re:Jacob Appelbaum Leaves the Tor Project on Monday June 06, 2016 @01:09PM (#11848333)
Think of all the people that have been distanced from the project because of his behavior. Think of all the other people who would be distanced from it in the future if his behavior was tolerated and defended by the organization. This is really not a loss at all!
Re:From web dev to 3D: Learning 3D modeling on Thursday May 19, 2016 @11:46AM (#11731074)
Actually, if you get into it, there is so much cool overlap between webdev and 3d, with three.js and webGL and everything. A lot of people doing really cool stuff in that space, one person to check out and get you down that rabbit hole is Vince McKelvie- really amazing stuff.

everyone should run burp on their phone at least once! its a kinda terrifying experience seeing how much data everyone collects on you...
YES my lunch break is going to rule, reading this. i love this series so far!

the first thing i noticed wrong with the first bike was 'oh my god that's a terrible placement for brake levers!' and only after I noticed the missing chain stays haha.
Re:Changes to Npm's unpublish policy on Tuesday March 29, 2016 @07:59PM (#11385953)
what happens if someone writes a script to publish then unpublish every dictionary word?
It depends on the model you have! Here is the link for more information: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
"Maybe Apple really does find the idea of hardware that can function for five years 'sad' and funny these days."

I don't think this is true. Apple just replaced the motherboard on my 2011 Macbook Pro for free. I've also upgraded the RAM, HD to a SSD, Battery, & Fans. Its running soooo good I love it.

The price of 5+ year old macbook pros, imacs, and mac pros on ebay is proof that apple does make hardware that lasts... Anyways, I'm interested in the relationship between apple releasing new products and the aftermarket value of older version. I think apple releasing newer ipads probably makes older used ipads more affordable..

the Da Vinci virus is a cover up for something even more sinister...
Re:Amazon's customer service backdoor on Sunday January 24, 2016 @08:44PM (#10965095)

Re:Finding the Tennis Suspects on Thursday January 21, 2016 @10:26PM (#10950558)
oops thanks!
ok i have a 360 camera and this is really sweet but what could i even do with the video once encoded with facebook's transform? yet at least... guess i'll have to watch the video and wait a few month/years for more adoption. I'm having a lot of fun using my camera to generate sky/light maps for 3d animation. its a ricoh theta s. a very weird product ahead of its time in a fun but buggy way!
Re:Finding the Tennis Suspects on Thursday January 21, 2016 @10:53AM (#10946009)
Great work! As someone who never does data exploratino or use python, I appreciated how annotated your iPython notebook was. It was fun to read through. (link https://github.com/BuzzFeedNews/2016-01-tennis-betting-analy... )
