Re:AI is destroying my CS degree on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @11:21AM (#50353973)
> This is entirely unacceptable. Professors who are using AI to generate assignments and course loads need to be discipline and removed if they can’t start doing their job.

Why? How many times have these same assignments been created, semester after semester for decades before we see how wasteful this is? These are solved problems in 99% of cases and just busy work for the staff to justify their existence. Their job should be to lecture and assist students, not create endless assignments that just regurgitate what was already done a thousand times already.

They arent publicly traded so they can choose to not be assholes. Gabe intentionally chose this route, he only answers to customers.
Re:Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews' on Saturday October 31, 2026 @09:48AM (#50316176)
> The winners begin to think there success is their own doing, forgetting the luck, good fortune, and many people who helped them along the way. They grow arrogant and full of hubris, looking down on and belittling others.

This line from the poster. Its been my experience over 30 years.

People stand on the shoulders of giants and bitch about the view
They aren't cutting staff because they made a ton of money. They are cutting staff because they see trouble on the horizon and are positioning themselves for that. Layoffs are rarely lagging indicators. They are more often predictors of trouble coming. This bubble will explode, MSFT wants to survive it. Thats all there is to it.
Re:What was a Token Ring network? on Friday October 16, 2026 @11:12AM (#50119399)
Token Ring was always a bad idea, even before IBM screwed it up. Tanium still does this crap and it's awful.
The price hikes drove me back to windows. If I'm paying those prices I may as well be able to play games with my kid again. I see no advantage to using Apple right now outside of the iPhone.
Re:OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @10:16AM (#49727413)
This sounds awful. AI Chatbots will be everywhere Shopify is. I just see a lot of popups in our future with fake names and faces pretending to be people asking us how they can help us.
The oldest supported kernel is 5.10 and that loses support in December. That's wild they are using a 3.X kernel

It was "garbage in, garbage out". That's the only conclusion I've been able to draw from all the propaganda around it.
Re:A misalignment of AI in mathematics on Friday September 11, 2026 @03:03PM (#49663605)
Everyone that will now pick sides. Just wait, I’m already seeing it on Reddit.
Re:A misalignment of AI in mathematics on Friday September 11, 2026 @02:57PM (#49663489)
This time, until they dont anymore. The next stage is people attacking the mathematicians and accusing them. The OpenAI fans come out to attack, then the masses will pick sides and it all just becomes a mess
Re:A misalignment of AI in mathematics on Friday September 11, 2026 @02:55PM (#49663450)
Everyones outraged all the time. It doesn't mean anything anymore. It's that meme from years ago about the red ants and the black ants living in a box peacefully until someone shakes the box and they start trying to kill each other. They go after each other and not the one shaking the box.

OpenAI/Anthropic are shaking the box.

Re:Feeling Sad about AI on Friday September 11, 2026 @01:32PM (#49662148)
That's kinda what I feel like telling him. He has a lot of passion and he's a very smart kid. I don't want to crush that, I want to nurture it. I think being real about things is important though and he has a lot of years still to ultimately decide.
Re:Feeling Sad about AI on Friday September 11, 2026 @01:30PM (#49662122)
I got him a ChatGPT account with parental controls on it. I'm just hoping he uses it as a tool and not a crutch.
Re:Feeling Sad about AI on Friday September 11, 2026 @01:25PM (#49662015)
You may be right, I really don't know. I can't control the ocean, all I can do is learn to surf. I use the tools, bring home the check and go about my life. I just feel terrible for the people following after me who wont get to experience what I did. Maybe it's for the best, maybe not. Time will ultimately tell I suppose.
Re:Feeling Sad about AI on Friday September 11, 2026 @01:18PM (#49661914)
My son told me yesterday he wants to program video games for a living. He's 13. He's looking at how it used to be done and seeing the pride people had in doing it. He hasn't seen how it is now.

Not sure I have the heart to tell him how terrible the industry has become. Feels like telling a kid 30 years ago that being an astronaut is pointless because they no longer go to the moon.

Re:Show HN: Hacker News, without AI on Friday September 11, 2026 @11:52AM (#49660483)
I'm mixed on that. Definitely topics I hide when I think people can't discuss them like adults, but sometimes even bad stories have some great discussions in them.
Re:Matt Mullenweg put on 'leave of absence' on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @06:02PM (#49635101)
Had a President make a big ordeal about leaving "for health reasons". His LinkedIn had him at a new company within a couple months doing the same thing.

Had a CISO leave for "personal" reasons. Talked to him a couple years later and yeah, he was fired.

Steal 20$ out of a cash register and make the local news. Waste a billion dollars at a corp and make insane decisions and ride out on a golden parachute. Its a fucked up world.

Re:Apple Watch Series 12 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @05:47PM (#49634880)
No one that does this with any regularity or seriousness uses an Apple Watch, they go with Garmin or one of the real fitness watches that can claim battery life in weeks and even months. My Fenix 8 charges once every 26-29 days. I left Apple Watch and never looked back. It's just an inferior product in every possible way.
Re:Defining AI Psychosis. Part 2: "Prolific AI Psychosis" on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @01:08PM (#49629788)
> Psychosis as a diagnosis is a serious condition. there's an implication that there's 'harm'

I just watched a company fire an entire department of people under the sincere belief a chatbot run by a middle manager could save them 10 million a year. This failed miserably and they now need to hire or re-hire people.

There is a tremendous amount of harm happening. Psychosis is a perfect term for what is happening.

Presumably. The headless CLI part of libreoffice is even included in Codex and Claude Code.
I didn't realize how addicted some orgs were to VMWare until Broadcom bought them and I witnessed zero people migrate to alternatives. It's been one of the single biggest shocks to me in my career. Watching them get squeezed openly and ruthlessly and just accepting it. I've only ever seen Microsoft pull that off before.
Unfortunately yes.
The broken, terrible English on that website does not inspire confidence of any kind.
