Re:Falcon 2 on Monday May 13, 2024 @11:52AM (#40344687)
First headline in bold: "Next-Gen Falcon 2 Series launches [...] and is only AI Model with Vision-to-Language Capabilities" ...
Can someone more knowledgeable on the subject please clarify if this proposed therapy requires personalization for each patient or if it can be (eventually) mass produced? Thanks!

What a (terrible) slashing streak for Amazon: first DPReview, now this...
"... 10 aerial color images taken April 19 during Ingenuity’s Flight 26" - I am more excited by the fact Ingenuity continues to operate and has so far collected unique imagery and telemetry on 26 flights!
Re:Engineers should invest in decision-making skills early on Wednesday December 29, 2021 @02:36AM (#29722763)
Sorry, but being an engineer is different than knowing your way around "code and stuff". Being an engineer is also different than being a computer scientist or programmer. The authors studied arts and mathematics, but that didn't stop them from starting the post by making it look like its written by engineers:

"Early in our careers as engineers, we’re told to invest in technical skills."

I posted the link on facebook and it got flagged as spam and removed..
I really don't think being called a Youtuber is meant as negative. I take issue with how the writer chose to present this story. If this was about the intricacies of ad revenue on YouTube for example, great, no need to specify he also has a physics degree. But I'm disappointed to see them paint him as just a guy who "likes to break down funky science" (and made 10k off a physicist) when he is more than that, with relevance to the actual story. For someone who doesn't know his work, he might as well be one of the guys burning snow with lighters a few months ago to prove its fake snow...
I see your point, but the title and first paragraphs try to paint the picture of a "funky science" youtuber betting a UCLA physicist $10k and winning (which for me is very different to the truth: UCLA physicist bets another physicist $10k and loses)
"A popular YouTuber filmed himself driving a wind-powered vehicle downwind faster than the wind itself. [...] Muller, the creator of the Veritasium YouTube channel, likes to break down funky science concepts for his 9.5 million subscribers."

The "popular YouTuber" is Derek Muller, who studied Engineering Physics and has a PhD in Physics Education Research... It's so frustrating to see how the writer tried so hard to make as much as clickbait-y title as possible...

Re:Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity' on Monday August 09, 2021 @07:49AM (#28115559)
I still don't see how our individual actions can have a widespread impact regarding climate change, sure, it will have some effect, but I'm willing to bet it would add up to fractions in the end. Pushing political and economic leaders to take action by tackling just the top mega polluters on the other hand seems like it would have significant impact https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac13f1
"compensated fairly for just how much you helped grow the software company’s bottom line" - as others have said: what do you do with all the stuff below the waterline, that DON'T grow the bottom line? Bugfixing, reliability, privacy, security, etc.

PS: Thanks, knew that, the dropdown buttons didn't work. And they still don't.

Is this "winter is coming", "the end is near" tone helpful? I'm not necessarily saying it's outright false, but look, there've been past times where the end truly felt near, but we managed to overcome it... Again, we might not this time, but why should we bet against us? Does anyone want to be the lone survivor in the post-apocalypse? Sorry if overreacting.
"... and actually drives everyone to compete in how much they can contribute" - because this is what we all need, competing everyday for making someone else more money. Also, this model seems to work reallly well for you: none of the top navigation buttons on your site work for me (using Chrome beta)
Re:Climate tipping points are now imminent, scientists warn on Wednesday July 28, 2021 @02:23PM (#27987523)
Honest question: Shouldn't we hedge our bets at this point and also start investing heavily in infrastructure that helps mitigate the worst of the effects? (Flood management, water desalination, cloud seeding, etc.) I feel the race to zero emissions is a trendy topic now in media, but perhaps we are past the "we can still stop bad things from happening" point.
Hmm, interesting, this reminds me of recent research where they used electrical currents and magnetic fields to enhance tomato plants, I wonder how the two findings are linked. (here's the article I saw: http://horticulturejournal.usamv.ro/index.php/scientific-pap... )
Re:Microsoft is bringing Android apps to Windows 11 on Thursday June 24, 2021 @12:18PM (#27619771)
"Android apps will run natively on Windows 11 and will be downloadable from Amazon’s Appstore, via the new Windows Store that’s included in the operating system." - confusion intensifies
I don't fully agree, as a more quiet person I don't feel excluded... Sometimes listening in to a conversation is enough, and in my experience people tend to group together such that everyone ends up chiming in their opinion...
Re:EA hacked and source code stolen on Friday June 11, 2021 @03:43AM (#27470417)
> "Source code is a version of computer software which is usually much easier to read and understand than the end version in a finished product, and could be used to reverse engineer parts of the product."

This excerpt is another example of why we need better computer literacy, starting with journalists.

Lastpass Off-Facebook Activity or why I stopped using it

In the process of going through and disabling as much data collection in Facebook as possible, I stumbled upon an entry for Lastpass in the Off-Facebook Activity page, showing 30 sent interactions (!).I was already leaving Lastpass after the recent news about the trackers they use in their Android app, but seeing this just made me go straight in and delete my account. Why would they do this? I...

2021 best comment so far :))
Would new shots adapted to novel strains have to pass the same trial process as the first versions of the vaccine? Or are there some provisions for an even faster approval? I don't know how it works for the flu vaccine.
Re:NordVPN disables features when you turn off auto-renew on Saturday February 06, 2021 @11:33AM (#26047617)
For me, Nordvpn was much much slower than Expressvpn, and with this, its a no-brainer
I don't work that much with GUI applications, but Dear ImGui was perfect for a past project and I just wanted to chime in on the positive feedback :) Take care everyone!

Re:The Social Dilemma on Monday September 21, 2020 @03:50AM (#24540859)
I think its good documentaries like this are made, so a greater audience gets attuned with these issues, but I for one could not get further than about 30-mins... I was honestly disappointed that such an important topic was deemed too "complex" and "nerdy" that the creators decided to resort to actors to show us the effects of these technologies... Which I guess is in line with the short attention spans caused by social media :/
Re:Rogue planets could outnumber the stars on Saturday August 22, 2020 @12:29PM (#24245198)
Maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject could answer, but could a much larger than expected number of such bodies partially explain Dark Matter?
Re:Germany plans to dim lights at night to save insects on Thursday August 06, 2020 @10:40AM (#24071305)
My experience in Germany was that a lot of small streets were already pretty dimly lit...
Wow, what a shitty move... Even if this is an automated process, this is still shitty. This app is one of a select few I think work perfectly, as it does exactly what I want it to do. It was also the first app I paid for since it was so good.
