"Better" is subjective a lot of the time, but load times are not. Modern web is so. slow.
It's like watching that Sloth in Zootopia sometimes browsing the modern web.
> And good thing you documented it, since in half a year you'll need it again.
Man this is too real for personal projects. I really need to write down my findings and thoughts more for future me.
> The rants about dishwashers and HVAC were memorable for being completely impractical advice and ignorant of economics
How you got that message from hour long rants and findings about dishwashers I'll never now.
The main take aways I got were:
- You might be using way too much soap
- Run your tap until it is hot before starting the dishwasher
Noxious weed probably? They can be harmful to local ecology.
My wife refuses to use bookmarks and instead uses open tabs. It drives me nuts.
Definitely. And often repeated/redundant information in many cases.
Not a lot of tears to shed for folks waiting a long time for a $250k (starting, at least at the time) toy.
I'd bet most of them see this as a cooler, shinier toy.
Well if you live in some areas (Greater Seattle any ways) it's often same-day arrival so it's even more addictive and useful.
In what context? Online shopping?
> Got a dud? Quality not as expected? Ordered two by mistake? Size is not fitting?
I totally agree, but I find the quality of the items I get off of Amazon to generally be a lot less than other places I chose to shop. Likely due to the fact that I intentionally shop on other sites for specific products but on Amazon I get things that just aren't necessary for me so I spend less time curating the purchases.
I learned this (public info) about Sweden a few years ago and as an American it really pissed me off.
In the US you can get the exact same info and probably more by simply paying a private corporation/middle man (background check services).
It seems like a huge trend in many sectors. We have the same setup as other countries, but shittier for consumers because there are lifeless leaches as middle men to make a quick buck.
I really enjoyed Fair Play. While we didn't really prescribe to playing the game rigorously or really start keeping track of cards, it was a great read for our relationship and really made both of us look at how we lived our lives and acted in our relationship. We immediately made some small but lasting pivots that removed unneeded friction and now have new-found respect for each others daily "grind".
I've recommended it to a few friends and they have had similar stories. Nothing life changing, but some small, nice changes to the dynamic and how they think about it.
> WHO IS IN SPACE is a project created by Destin Sandlin of Smarter Every Day and Geoff Barrett.
Neat. Destin has a great talk that he gave to/at NASA about Artemis a few years ago.

It reminds of one of the later scenes from Secret Life of Walter Mitty when Sean (photographer) decides not to take a picture of the elusive snow leopard in front of them.
> Walter Mitty: Are you going to take it?
> Sean O'Connell: Sometimes I don't. If I like a moment, for me, personally, I don't like to have the distraction of the camera. I just want to stay in it.
> Walter Mitty: Stay in it?
> Sean O'Connell: Yeah. Right there. Right here.
Missing FCA (Glacier international airport in Kalispell, Montana, USA).
It's small but a beautiful flight!
A huge ecosystem of third party accessories, cases, skins, etc.
The openness is easily worth it.
I had no idea others hit this, I just assumed it was some wonky setup I have locally. I hope we both figure it out one day haha (or Firefox does)
> Sometimes, these redirect URLs take a perceivable amount of time to load, which is very irritating.
Great. On top of my on-going battle with Windows + Firefox + DNS/TLS resolution sometimes stalling for seconds at a time, another few second server-side stall is introduced.
I swear that every day modern computing scenarios get slower and slower instead of snappier and snappier.
I am also not using anything near an industrial PSU. I am using cheap ($20) "5V" DC barrel chargers from Amazon (similar to a shabby laptop charger).
Are you sure you aren't a clanker? You seemed to have missed some critical details from my short post.

Mostly unrelated, but I (mostly Copilot) spent some time re-authoring a software stack of HUB75 displays in our office with rotating pixel art. A previous team set them up on a overly-complex stack that relied on a bunch of services that haven't existed for years, getting them stuck in place for the last few years.
While I found the hardware pretty simple, HUB75 displays seem _very_ picky about over-volting. The setup is basically a simple controller (such as ESP32-Trinity) plugged directly into one HUB75 (potentially chained to a few more).
When running off of USB power it pulls the voltage down to ~4.7v and the image looks great. When running off our junky Amazon 5v barrel connectors the image gets all sorts of artifacting. Quite frustrating!
Anyhow, I can't recommend HUB75 displays enough. Toss some retro pixel art on there and it is such a nice little picture frame sized treat!
> As an aside, I recently started having Claude help me with configuring my *arr stack and it has helped tremendously. I used to have to babysit and manually intervene on maybe 10% of requests, now it’s near zero
Any more details here? I hit this a lot and it's not too much work, but still pretty annoying.
I didn't see any details in the article other than this quote, which seems promising.
> He’s the guy who sits with the new kids at lunch and passes it on.
Slanted take here, but this is exactly what they are doing with the federal government.
They like to complain that "big government inefficient and bad" while actively making it inefficient and bad. They are fulfilling their own prophecies.
Similar to immigration I'm sure. If all immigration is illegal then it's all bad!
No, but it also doesn't not support the Polar (the wet feeder I use). A good starting point though, thanks for the link!
This is giving me the confidence to RE my cat feeder. The company (Petlibro) has an outage and now my chilled wet feeder that should be a dumb, offline feeder is basically bricked now.
The device reports fine wifi but the backing services are totally busted.
I was a few years late to the start (early 90s kid) but I am nostalgic for the vast amount of myfreewebs + dot.tk websites out there.
Hit counters on the front page was mandatory of course.
And how much they (like all other social media) put their mobile web experience into limp mode for no good reason.
This website reminds of me a small site I want to make.
For years I have taken pictures of bathroom sinks. My main curiosity with them is the crazy variance of proportions and layout of the bowl and the faucet(s). It all started because there are so many sinks where you basically have to touch the sink bowl just to wash your hands because of the faucet choice. So I want to make a similar website which shows the bathroom sinks of the world!
Seattle to Joburg is brutal. It's ~23 hours of flying with a lay over somewhere like Dubai. As much as a 23 hour flight sounds terrible, it's hard for me to express how much dread I felt getting back onto a plane right after a 13 hour flight. I'd rather just hunker down for the full day I think.
