A part of me doesn't want to believe this story.
Re:Permissive Action Links – how nuclear weapons are secured on Tuesday February 05, 2013 @10:25PM (#5174734)
I like the part where it says "the secret unlock code was set to 00000000." Some things never change.
Re:Why did men stop wearing high heels? on Saturday February 02, 2013 @04:21PM (#5157368)
Reminds me of the theory that men stopped wearing hats because of cars. http://www.npr.org/blogs/krulwich/2012/05/04/152011840/who-k...
Re:Show HN: LaughMatch on Saturday November 10, 2012 @09:32PM (#4768570)
I think it's an alluring idea for match making. But what's to stop OKCupid from releasing this same feature for their audience in less than 3 days. I assure you that their engineers also read Hacker News. That aside, really innovative use of youtube, better than Feross Aboukhadijeh's creation of Youtube Instant.

This is a Japanese site that uses similar technology. http://www.3dcg-arts.net/art/polygon/1679/full

http://p3d.in/ is another one.
I just want to be cautious. My cofounder and I are working on the video and application in time for the deadline but since we're in New Jersey there's a high probability of power and internet loss in our area... which would really suck.
Re:Medal of Honor uses WebGL for Nations on Battlelog on Wednesday October 24, 2012 @11:32AM (#4693364)
This is a modified version of Google's 'WebGL Globe' library. I've created a couple of these myself for Reddit

Re:Google Tag Manager on Monday October 01, 2012 @08:17PM (#4600050)
To compete in the growing Tag Management Market. Adobe offers a Tag Management service and there are many other paid premium versions. Tag Management is a tool for digital marketers to deploy agile javascript code in a technical environment where site builds are not agile.
Re:Architecture firm proposes NYC underground park on Sunday September 30, 2012 @02:19PM (#4593555)
Inside the Delancey Station (next to the Williamsburg Bridge - Manhattan Side) there is a huge underground open area which served as a small train yard up until the 60's/70s. This place has leaks, garbage, graffiti and rats. It would cost significantly more money to convert this area into a park than was spent on the highline.
Re:WebGL Car Viewer on Friday September 28, 2012 @12:54PM (#4586499)
http://www.webgl.com has a decent collection of demos (full disclosure: self plug)
Look into 'fail fast' as a concept. Facebook claims to take fail fast to the extreme.
Keep in mind that facebook's engineering philosophy is to push new code out every single day. This means that there is little to no QA on code push. Every engineer takes responsibility for their own code push and because people are human they mess up from time to time. I don't think this means that the culture is broken... there are simply pros and cons to on the fly site builds.

Re:Manchester (England) Airport's body scanners scrapped on Monday September 17, 2012 @10:17AM (#4532651)
I think the TSA officially pretends that things like the the 2011 Moscow bombings don't happen.... at least they don't happen to the U.S... therefore it's not a real concern.

Re:Google Glass and the Future of Technology on Thursday September 13, 2012 @08:26PM (#4519397)
I think it will be interesting when certain classes of people reject the idea of being privately recording without their permission and will simply refuse to hold a conversations or interact with anyone wearing the device. Kinda like a boycott against the device's impedement into social situations. For example, if I was at a job interview and my interviewer was wearing this device, I would walk out the door. Even if the job was at Google.
Re:Left Alone by Its Owner, Reddit Soars on Monday September 03, 2012 @11:35AM (#4470703)
Yea, that's David Carr's voice (the NYTimes writer). He's kind of a skeptical luddite, but I have immense respect for him. He's one of the central figure in the NYTimes documentary "Page One: Inside the New York Times."
I see it now. Pledge 1 million dollars (1 of 5 left)and be invited to NASA command center during Rover touchdown. Plus all of the above.
Re:Coding Horror: I Was a Teenage Hacker on Thursday August 09, 2012 @10:55AM (#4361311)
omg, WinPopUp! That brings me back.
Photojournalists follow a slightly different standard of operations than reporters. They are supposed to let images speak for themselves and work as an impartial observer. This is the attitude that allows them to be embedded in dangerous war zones where hopefully they wont be shot or kidnapped...
He wants to keep his job at the NYTimes. If he is known as an biased photographer who 'agitates' police, he won't be sent on certain assignments.
Re:Anti-nuke protesters surround Japanese parliament on Sunday July 29, 2012 @12:34PM (#4308887)
I think the point is that Japan can live without nuclear power. As a collectivist society, Japanese have voluntarily cut down on energy usage. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/05/japan-nuclear-react... However losing the nuclear industry in Japan will harm the economy and increase the unemployment rate at a bad time (everytime is a bad time for a debt nation).

Sanity has really little to do with the situation.

Re:A Dust Over India on Sunday July 08, 2012 @11:51PM (#4216598)
I agree completely, my apologies if I made it sound like a mathematical postulate.
