Location: Dublin, Ireland

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: No

Technologies: AWS / PHP / ... People?

Résumé/CV: On request - or http://ie.linkedin.com/in/danielhunt/

Email: [email protected]

I'm a deeply technical leader with a passion for cloud infra & automation.

Looking for new leadership opportunities, happy to work remotely but have preference for Dublin.

I’d like to see this too if you’re willing/happy to share
This looks really useful for commutes.

Will be trying this one out tomorrow I think.

The comments look a bit weird though. Don't fit the look/feel of the rest. Love how the articles are embedded though.

First I've heard of Opbeat - it looks beautiful and functional. A great pairing.

I'd love to try them out, but it seems like no one gives PHP any love any more so it's not possible :(

Re:AWS Lambda – Best practices on Thursday March 02, 2017 @04:02AM (#13772696)
Unfortunately, there's absolutely nothing here regarding things like git, or CI/CD, or how-to-use-it-when-a-medium-to-large-team-is-involved

If anyone has any research, thoughts, or comments on this side of Lambda, I'd love to learn more

It looks like HN and Reddit combined just DDOS'd Dominos.

Wow.

Those `cemented` examples appear to be ones that don't have a tag at all

If you uncheck all boxes, those items remain. That's probably why they're there for your case.

That behaviour is frustratingly frustrating.

A few colourful words were uttered because of their shady, terrible UX choice.

And all for a few extra email addresses? God damnit, what the hell is wrong with people?

Re:Challenges you’re going to face when building a chatbot on Tuesday January 03, 2017 @11:43AM (#13310406)
The immediate redirection as a result of the HN referral on this page is frustratingly childish
Re:Insecam: Large Directory of Unsecure Cameras on Wednesday December 28, 2016 @02:06PM (#13272758)
Sure, I get that, but are these cameras being sold as "secure from anyone that isn't you", or as "keep an eye on things easily, from anywhere in the world!"

The distinction is important, because an implication of secure-by-default means that the manufacturer has dropped the ball. If there's nothing to imply that the device is secure (as opposed to just providing 'security' via CCTV), then this is more a case of the installer of the device willingly, and knowingly, providing a live-stream of their property to the world.

Re:Insecam: Large Directory of Unsecure Cameras on Wednesday December 28, 2016 @01:56PM (#13272680)
I understand the intent behind your comment, but is it really "left open in error"?

It genuinely feels like these devices are unintentionally intentionally left open.

Re:Hello admins of EU AWS systems – DNS outage in eu-west-1 on Wednesday December 14, 2016 @10:02PM (#13182037)
I've been using AWS for years and this is the first I've ever heard of this.

All I can say is "WHAAAAAAT?!"

You've made me question my reality. Take an upvote for that alone.

Re:Hello admins of EU AWS systems – DNS outage in eu-west-1 on Wednesday December 14, 2016 @09:55PM (#13182000)
Seeing an increase in errors in `1a` and `1c` now myself too
Re:Hello admins of EU AWS systems – DNS outage in eu-west-1 on Wednesday December 14, 2016 @09:55PM (#13181996)
That's true - they loadbalance instance creation unless you specifically ask for an instance in a zone

That doesn't apply here though. Instances that are already up are experiencing DNS resolution issues because the Amazon-provided DNS service (which is distinct from Route53) is failing

Re:Hello admins of EU AWS systems – DNS outage in eu-west-1 on Wednesday December 14, 2016 @09:44PM (#13181946)
Interesting difference in experience there

Complicated networks are complicated, I suppose

Hello admins of EU AWS systems – DNS outage in eu-west-1

https://status.aws.amazon.comLooks like there's a DNS outage in AWS DublinAll DNS request coming from `eu-west-1b` fail completely if you're using the default AWS DNS resolution itself - if you switch to `8.8.8.8` it's all totally fine, but that's of no use if you have private services that need internal AWS resolution`1a` and `1c` are also affected, but to a much lower extent from what I can tell

Ludicrously simple but I rely on it and use it every single day for Dev (and real) purposes

<3 single purpose apps

edit the app I use for HN (MiniHack) seems to have mistakenly replied to the first reply instead of the root

Sorry for comment sniping!

Re:Tech Talent: How the UK lost six potential titans on Monday September 19, 2016 @03:11AM (#12529540)
I'm not English, I don't live in the UK, but the approach and wording in this article bothers me.

Are these companies "sell outs" because they sold, or because they sold to foreign companies?

Shouldn't they be lauded as successes for having been sold in the first place? Is this part of the problem that the root of the article (as I see it) is actually talking about?

I quite like how this approach to storytelling/demonstration has been put together.

Sure, they hijack the scrollwheel, and there isn't a lot of textual content on the page, but it is done very well in my opinion.

I thought it would be appreciated here (I have no connection with NYT or this story)

A++, would scroll again.

Please don't take my random internet musings too much to heart (if you have at all).

As I've said elsewhere, I have a lot of respect for everything that you as a group have pumped out to get LO to where it is right now.

Thank you for everything you've done so far, and what you'll (hopefully) continue to do into the future.

Yup - this was, and is, completely subjective.

(also, I think pessimizer missed the username of the user he replied to. It wasn't me)

I don't want to get drawn into this type of argument - suffice to say that hand-waving me (or anyone) away with a "well why don't you commit code to fix it|make it better?" doesn't make what I'm saying any less valid.

That sort of argument is pointless, and does absolutely nothing for further the discussion.

I have great respect for the creators and contributors to LibreOffice, but in my opinion, the UI is outdated. I even said at the very start of my comment, that this was an opinion. My opinion. One man's opinion.

Maybe I wasn't clear - having TOTP integration is a (genuinely) great thing.

My issue is that it's ugly as sin, not that it's there. As above, though - I'm well aware that these are opinions from one person.

The icons aren't the problem, for me at least

Look at the embedded video that's linked on the article - see the integrated totp interface for Google auth? An interface that ships that kind of 'it works, it'll do* UI comes across as half-baked to me.

PHP4eva!

Also, ya I know I'm generalising a lot with my statement. I did give a disclaimer at the start, but as with all opinions ... They're usually wrong

[opinion-disclaimer]

I've often been drawn to testing out LibreOffice (and OpenOffice), but every single time I open the apps, they always look terrible.

This isn't 1990 anymore - if the kind of UI design that the devs have gone for (have settled on?) alienates a tech-friendly user such as myself, there isn't a hope in hell of people like my parents using it regularly.

Does anyone know why the style they use has persisted for so long? Is it just a case that no one cares about this sort of thing on that project?

Re:Network Performance Issues in Europe on Monday June 20, 2016 @10:24AM (#11938208)
A number of high-profile, consumer-centric sites/services were completely offline for around an hour throughout what appears to be a large portion of Europe.

Seems like a fair statement to me

(Dublin, Ireland - a heap of sites and service were completely offline, including hackernews, whatsapp, and reddit)

Re:A Revolutionary Discovery in China on Monday April 11, 2016 @03:35AM (#11470124)
I tend to read comments, and not articles - as a result, sometimes I wish that HN had a special `TLDR` subsection, directly below a posting, that used vote-based mechanics for the selection of a post like this.

Kudos to you for such a concise summary
