I'm very happy to report that most sentiment analysis is awesomely, incredibly, even beautifully inane.

Great list, thank you. Dhalgren is incredible. Glad to see it.
Re:Ask HN: What job did you leave IT for? on Wednesday May 31, 2017 @12:30AM (#14450427)
I left my job to help people quit their jobs. Seriously. Even though I was writing code and managing teams for big clients (Google, Starbucks, P&G) I found people's individual careers more exciting.

Really sorry to hear about your illness and struggles. That sounds pretty tough. Would you say that IT feels like "your calling?"

I've had friends and clients leave tech for more fulfilling, but lower wage work in cooking, farming, design, music, art, after-school work, and non-profit work.

There are a lot of good ideas on this thread, but it would be easier to speak to your situation if I had some more details.

Email me if you're up for sharing more, I'd be happy to help if I can:

I loled. What do you do for money?

Re:Ask HN: Does anyone here have an art degree? on Saturday January 07, 2017 @12:11PM (#13345174)
I have an MFA in 'Literary Arts' and studied creative writing and visual art in undergrad.

I have worked in a silly amount of industries, from retail to cleaning beach houses to coaching ceos. I have consulted for large energy companies, small non-profits, and, most recently, marketing agencies.

A friend in the startup game inspired me to stop dabbling and make a go of it as a coder, mainly for $$, but also because I enjoy endurance problems and painful growth.

I make art because people are fascinating. The emotional systems they construct around themselves- and the systems they are woven into- endlessly blow my mind.

Making good art requires a fascination with human systems. All of them.

I have stood out to my employers as someone who 'isn't like other coders' because I am interested in the emotional stakes of their lives, and have developed the skill of re-communicating those emotional stakes back to them in an artful way.

Art teaches you to see. This is helpful, socially, professionally, because most people want to be seen.

This understanding has been powerful and lucrative, for sure.

The creative writing workshop process also thickened my hide and killed unproductive parts of my ego.

Most professional meetings with supposedly 'high stakes' don't come close to the kind of personal vulnerability required to put your poem, your inner life, in front of a group of strangers.

I've read through these reviews- pretty wild how they openly attack anyone who has a negative experience with them, instead of demonstrating drive to fully resolve issues. Being sympathetic, positive and following through are customer service basics, and they are just flailing here.

Re:Why I Still Get Shunned by Taxi Drivers on Saturday October 24, 2015 @11:42PM (#10445895)
Users can enter the destination before being picked up. I've had drivers cancel before arriving, so I usually wait to enter the destination until my seat belt is buckled.

It looks like they reserve double quotes for JSX attributes:

Same here. Top three are partner, mother and sister. Makes sense. 4 is someone I haven't talked to in 8 years and barely know.
Thanks for this. Really clear writing, I'm devouring this quickly.

Re:Alan Watts: Money, Guilt, and the Machine on Wednesday February 12, 2014 @11:47AM (#7225338)
Watts has experienced a general surge in the past few years or so-- I'd attribute it to the growing number of Youtube videos featuring audio of his lectures. The 'What if Money Were no Object' video in particular was passed around a lot in art communities and college campuses about two years ago. Trey Parker and Matt Stone animated some of his lectures, adding to the surge as well. Also, the band The Books prominently features Alan Watts samples in their music too, which is how I was introduced.

Betterment, 40% portfolio return this year! You can very easy adjust allocations according to your risk level and goals. It's low maintenance and awesome.
Re:Sigil on Thursday September 12, 2013 @07:22PM (#6377635)
It was very clear that a friend's workplace could leap 40 years into the future with a basic user database and eCommerce platform, so I explained the financial/productivity benefits at a party and offered to do it at a really low rate.

Other clients have come from telling friends I was freelancing, especially developer friends who will refer you when they're too busy to take on new work. If you have no developer friends, show up at meetups, design events, and start introducing yourself to others as a freelancer. You shouldn't start hard selling in social environments necessarily-- make authentic connections with people you vibe with so when they have some work down the line, they think of you.

For me it has boiled down to what is effectively networking, though the term/concept as I understood it from afar always made me nervous and misanthropic.

Its essential for freelancers, though.

I watched a lot of Ramit Sethi videos on youtube about social behavior in negotiations, networking, and how to not being a weirdo in otherwise anxiety producing environments. These helped immensely. And the amount of free info is amazing.
