Re:Control the Ideas, Not the Code on Monday July 13, 2026 @09:50AM (#48892662)
Very uncomfortable to read. The proposed idea of not reading the code you ostensibly wrote, doesn’t just challenge the traditional workflow or methodology, it challenges the identity of a programmer itself. For experienced, respected programmers like antirez perhaps reading and writing code truly has just gotten in the way of the ideas, but I cannot identify with that perspective. The devil is in the details, reading other peoples code (and code the LLM writes) evolves the idea itself, and changes my understanding of it. My view on this is so biased by the direct relation of code I read and write to feeding myself and my family (the vast majority of my programming is for a paycheck) that suggestions of removing myself from the process feel grim, not exciting.

NTS radio https://www.nts.live (and the app) is my most recent favorite way to discover, underground/rare/undiscovered music, curated by humans that are experts in their scene or musicians themselves. Covers many genres
Re:The KLF: Chaos, magic and the band who burned £1M on Friday February 03, 2023 @10:33PM (#34651157)
Wonder showzen was inspired by this stunt and took their episode budget of ~$100k and paid a homeless person $10k to throw another $10k out of a helicopter onto the statue of liberty. It didn’t work out in the end but still was a hell of a tribute in theory. See https://www.brooklynvegan.com/wonder-showzen-creators-talk-t...
Re:Data stream hack gets UCI world championship qualifier banned on Thursday December 08, 2022 @12:11PM (#33910348)
These zwift races require two data inputs, one from a power meter (pedal or crank) and one from the trainer. So manipulating just the trainer flywheel would not be enough.
From the article, in office is 3 days per week -

Maybe you are thinking of PoC||GTFO https://www.sultanik.com/pocorgtfo/
custom ISA, 400W TDP. Sounds like a real pain in the ass =)
Private relay will egress from the same general region as the client source location. So if you’re in switzerland and hopping through a US exit point that is a bug. This is clearly explained in the wwdc video
Re:AT&T Fiber in the SF Bay Area is flipping bits on Monday December 07, 2020 @08:00PM (#25340144)
AT&T runs transparent proxies on their network that have been known to intercept and mangle tls, and directly manipulate tcp packets on the wire.

Take a tcpdump capture on both server/client side and compare the handshake/tcp headers/negotiated window size. Often you see the server sending one thing, but the client sees another

Re:Helsinki Relocation Package: City as a Service on Thursday November 05, 2020 @09:07PM (#25004187)
I'm confused if this is for people that are already employed (aren't there tax implications for working in another country?) or for startup founders, or startup employees?
I had a similar experience on a grand jury in new york (where you decide whether or not a felony case should go to trial at all) and was shocked to see a prosecutor come back 4 times on the same case, each time with a slightly less serious charge (ie, starting with level 1 felony assault and ending with some lesser assualt charge). So even after we the grand jury decided there was not enough evidence for the felony assault case to go to trial, they attempt it over and over again, with the same evidence, though requesting a slightly lesser charge, desperate for a different result.

I work on a very large internet property and can confirm that the majority of v6 internet traffic we see is mobile (easily discerned by ASN)
Re:Full third-party cookie blocking and more on Tuesday March 24, 2020 @03:54PM (#22678301)
Still dreaming of a way to block cookies per-domain

Edit: someone just told me you can do it with osx adguard, in the user rules you can set "||domain.com^$cookie" to block all cookies from domain.com

Re:Apple Edge Cache on Friday February 14, 2020 @02:05PM (#22329281)
Many ISPs do exactly this for high traffic content that is not served via TLS (which prevents it as you suspected)

These devices would be in addition to Apple's (likely large) colo footprint. Sending iOS updates to 1 billion+ devices is dissected in a paper here https://arxiv.org/abs/1810.02978
Re:Kernel-Bypass Networking on Tuesday December 10, 2019 @08:13PM (#21758604)
You can get within a few percentage points, yes

I just tested this with two hosts with 4.14.127 upstream kernel and upstream mlx5 driver, and mellanox connectx-5 card. Using 16 iperf threads

[SUM] 0.0-10.0 sec 85.1 Gbits/sec

That's pretty close with no tuning, and well beyond 10gb/s we mentioned earlier

Re:Kernel-Bypass Networking on Tuesday December 10, 2019 @07:47PM (#21758445)
We are not struggling to do line rate 10G in the kernel. Modern 100Gbe nics (mellanox, solarflare) will happily do line rate with stock upstream kernel for a while now (definitely since 4.x) you only need to tune your irq balancing, and you can probably get away with not even doing that. If you are buying 100gbe nics you are also buying server class (xeon, rome) processors that can keep up.

Source: I operate a CDN with thousands of 100Gbe nics with a stock upstream LTS kernel, and minimal kernel tuning.

Re:Open Connect on Friday November 15, 2019 @12:36PM (#21546833)
Most CDN operators do this, including apple which also has a public website about it - https://cache.edge.apple
Re:New York City is a mall on Monday November 11, 2019 @11:36PM (#21511555)
Subjective and frankly insane to say. Over 8 million people live in NYC (over 2x the population of the next most populous city in the USA, Los Angeles). NYC is commonly known in western culture as a world capital of culture, finance, and world politics (recall the UN). The population of NYC has grown by over 223,615 since the previous census. I agree with you that other cities around the world (a very large area!) may appeal to your personal sensibilities, but saying you 'feel bad for New Yorkers' is trolling. I Feel Bad for any backwoods country-dweller that thinks they have it better than the hundreds of thousands of people that made the choice to move to one of the (objectively) greatest cities in the world to improve their life. See how that feels? You just attempted to apply that to millions of people. Every densely populated has is faults (Barcelona particularly! Many, as in a substantial voting bloc, residents would prefer you to have never come as a tourist at all.) Pigeonholing the residents of the largest city in the USA to be worthy of your sympathy based on their choice to live there is not constructive, nor rational.

Anecdata, but I have worked for two of the big faangm companies and myself and every coworker I am aware of had a signing bonus.

Important things that are actually accomplishable.
Re:Microsoft Is Putting Ads on the Mail App in Windows 10 on Friday November 16, 2018 @01:46PM (#18470918)
use ssh -vvv when you connect. Several types of ciphers were deprecated for security reasons over the past few releases, you can reenable them in /etc/ssh_config or /etc/sshd_config
Re:RHEL is deprecating KDE on Friday November 02, 2018 @04:56PM (#18366680)
I find it odd there's so much emotion about KDE vs Gnome in RHEl/CentOS. RHEL is an 'enterprise' distro, which means in theory professionals are using it inside of their application of choice, and almost never interacting in a meaningful way with the DE. They need almost no customization and only the simplest file manipulation tools, and the ability to open the programs they do their work in. If you want to use it at home, you can just install KDE yourself, why expect rhel to support it?

Re:The Best Textbooks on Every Subject on Thursday July 26, 2018 @05:20PM (#17621274)
Take it at your local community college. I’m about to finish a summer session of algebra 2 and I have learned much quicker and more thoroughly than when I attempted with online resources, or books. I highly recommend it!
Quite simply, homeowners do not want homeless people in front of their abodes, and will vote to make sure it remains that way. What would you do if put in the position of said homeowner? It becomes a more difficult decision when its literally on your doorstep

Can anyone explain how to reconcile this with the massive explosion in homelessness in SF and LA?
Re:Show HN: Devstream.tv – Watch developers code live on Friday March 09, 2018 @07:03PM (#16556172)
I'm a hobbyist programmer so I don't get a chance to 'pair program' really ever, and watching someone else code is very useful. Books only go so far.
