Re:Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic? on Friday January 16, 2026 @12:35PM (#46649188)
Answer: You CAN NOT and no amount of money, parties, socializing will ever work.

Loneliness is an emotion, you can never get rid of your emotions, but you can control them. Some people more so than others. I'm never alone anymore, because exactly what is quoted below from avensec in the thread.

Quote from avensec:

"Personal anecdote: No amount of community would have helped me feel like I wasn't alone, because I needed the world around me to provide some sense of my self-worth. It felt counterintuitive, but for me, I had to learn to be alone. Only then could I feel like I wasn't alone. It all came down to attachment theory and self-worth."

What else my own, Java, coding for over 50 years. If YOU can't figure out what your own code is doing after ten years of not looking at it then nobody else can either. Hint, Comment your thoughts as much as possible, to make things clear when there not to you.

Format just like a book. Use full text variables, methods, class names. Don't start a project until you define your formatting. Stick to it! Do this and your documentation will be easy.

I had a tool like this, or course without ML. It was called Ajqvue. There is still a clone/fork over at GitHub. Worked on it for over ten years. Was created by myself to use for testing access to database while developing UI for inventory database management system with accounting also built in.

It really evolved into a UI to get the common users off the back of the db admins.

1) Open Source 2) Data Access Locally and Remote

docs/ has Manual, have somewhere videos.

Outerbase seems to finally get to solutions that were just lacking in alot of past UIs. Well I guess, Tableau, but gone now. Problem it just takes alot to get a decent one, that functions, and in my opinion now everyone thinks tech tool solutions are a web UI base.

Ajqvue was not.

Re:Ask HN: How to do cross platform GUI? on Sunday August 23, 2020 @03:54PM (#24254775)
For a native application for the desktop Java fits the need for cross platform. Yea its GUI is rather plain, but it has all the components required.

I have a Java application that was built in 1999, still works on Mac, Linux, and Windows. I have built some JavaFX apps, but they have had problems rendering on some machines, so I have abandon that avenue. Besides it appears to be designed for the web, and was just a pain for layouts.

For years I have been working a Java framework that allows for quick building of basic applications. The framework comes with database access, SQLite included, and a deployments and what is now called package management.

There appeared an anomaly in COVID-19 Tracking Project for April 12, 2020, US Daily Hospitalized Increase. Plot shown. Perhaps bad data or maybe not.

I have been tracking my expenses in one form or another for my entire life. How long well before we had computers and I used columnar paper spreadsheets. Its always been a pain, Excel, whatever when you need data at the end of the year.

Now I use a database with my own application that handles table entries just like a spread sheet, has analysis, and charting, import/export of data.

Need income tracking, project time tracking whatever add a table(s).

It will read whatever schema you define and works with MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite and others. If you want something a little extra then it supports plugins. Make your own. Videos, docs, and plugin tutorial see website. Its free open source.

I'm interested in desktop applications that interface to various databases, servers for processing information locally on personal systems that now revel anything scientist, engineers, researchers, etc only dreamed of having as individuals 20 years ago.

The model being followed now of an all encompassing web browser server processing service is introducing complexities that need not occur. Let alone the privacy implications that are being compromised. Steam seems to be one of the only companies designing otherwise, though their application still looks HTML based. That is the type of softwork work that interests me.
