Same here - simply cannot fix it, and it's somewhat annoying that it talks about Yubikeys when I'm only using on-device security keys instead. Must be very confusing for many others!
Re:Ubiquiti Launches UniFi OS Server for Self-Hosting on Thursday July 31, 2025 @01:48PM (#44748162)
I've been self-hosting a Unifi controller (now called 'Unifi Network') for years in a Docker container, and before that I'd run it on a Windows machine whenever I needed to make changes to the configuration - I assume this pivot to call the self-hosted version 'UniFi OS' implies a future where more than just the Network application can be self-hosted.
Re:Recreating Daft Punk's Something About Us on Saturday April 05, 2025 @10:24AM (#43593780)
A genuine confusion for me - as a visual artist - about how two things can be true: this can be a great love letter to such an iconic and brilliant song, and also why generative AI was used to create accompanying imagery in this article. I don't see how an piece about the 'joys of music production' - aka, creativity - should also actively be anti-creative. To me, those two thoughts seem completely opposing.
Re:Apple Brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad on Tuesday May 09, 2023 @11:26AM (#35875809)
At $50 a year (equates to $4 a month if paid annually), this is - albeit a subscription model - so much better than Adobe's £20 a month plan for just Premiere (obviously to get you to go for the £50 a month plan). It's a much better plan and I hope things like this make Adobe consider their costs. It's a big ask and I know they won't... but you can hope.
Agreed, I'll be waiting for more information - but it's even more mad that I have to wait until 'next week' for that, a mere handful of days before the shut off date as well.
A horrific idea. Surely, no developer at Twitter surely believes this is a good idea? Personally, my computer science project relies on this as it tweets to Twitter and it's an integral part of the project. With one swoop from Muskrat, it's 40% of my entire grade, gone. Thanks Elon - hope you're happy. Rat.

Edit: a stronger insult.

I'd argue that's not really something Google have wrong - parental/education control blockers aren't few and far between.
It was the last corner of the last lap - hugging the wall damages your car but because he didn't actually need to tap the brakes he just kept on going, round the wall faster than the others.
Re:National Rail Network Map on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @05:54AM (#32835068)
I assumed this was the UK, because our rail network is the 'National Rail' network. Could the fact it's the US be added to the title?

Edit: It's not just the US (!) Maybe a 'North American rail network map'?

*they, but yes
This seems like it's some 'muh free speech' post from this new account in response to Cloudflare removing KF's services...

The major thing to worry about with Cloudflare is what happens if it goes down, when, and how often. It doesn't go down often enough for me to worry about it, but also: 99.9% of people reading this probably use Cloudflare's free tier - as do I! If you want constant uptime, pay for it.

Also, probably best for discussion of CF vs KF to go in that thread.

Re:UK set to have automated drone superhighway on Tuesday July 19, 2022 @11:39AM (#32153144)
The UK loves the word 'superhighway'. They usually fail. We had 'cycle superhighways' in London, started while Livingstone was Mayor and then left to basically rot under Johnson's term. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cycle_routes_in_London
To whoever is annoyed at this, please use this space to discuss this instead of vandalizing the Wikipedia:Advice_to_T-Mobile_IPv6_users page in an incredibly childish way ('we are poo poo heads').
It doesn't, though. Google use other domains.
The ISP I use in the UK [0] has VoIP offerings too, and they let you search for a pattern of numbers. We've got several similar numbers for our businesses and some fun 1234 patterns too. Very memorable!

Re:No-code startup Integromat becomes Make, snatches huge domain on Wednesday February 23, 2022 @05:48PM (#30447673)
I've heard a lot about Integromat, but in the worst way. Not a fan [1] of services that appear to spam me with adverts or their competitors spamming me with adverts to make them look bad.

On the topic of the name - 'Make', to me as a developery-person sounds like a code system (because of GNU make) or some electronics/hacker type thing ('maker' as in 'makerspace'). But I imagine people who know what GNU make is aren't the target market.

Re:Gov.uk Platform as a Service on Thursday January 27, 2022 @09:11AM (#30100769)
A bit off-topic, but gov.uk is quickly improving into an actual usable site. The GDS (Government Digital Service [0]) and the GDS (Government Design System [1]) - who run the posted link too - are doing a great job. Want to renew my passport? Easy, same UI/UX for getting a drone license, taxing my car and filing for benefits. Want to renew my driving license? Well, that's yet to move from the old DVLA site, but it's all getting there!

Edit: Yes, I know the UK Gov's system for benefits isn't easy to understand. That's on the Gov, not GDS :)

That's kind of on Roblox then for not answering their questions transparently.

Deep in the Google Apps for Work/free G Suite/Workspace ecosphere – what's next?

Hi!Similar to [0] and [1], but hoping this is different enough to warrant a new topic. For the last 15 years, we've had Google Apps For Work/G Suite/Google Workspace for our family - and we use Gmail, Drive, Photos, and importantly have spent hundreds on Google Play Store purchases (albeit, 90% of that was using credit from Google Opinion Rewards) - we've all only ever had Android phones, so...

This weird hatred of not sharing pronouns is harmful - it's.. a few characters next to your name to help people talk to you and to help people who use different pronouns to what society has given them. Please stop acting all high-and-mighty over them - it's always with good intent.
Genuine Q: how is it racist?

Re:Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021? on Friday December 24, 2021 @08:20AM (#29673330)
Shon Faye's 'The Transgender Issue'. Revolutionary.
This isn't how Formula One should be. This isn't how a Championship should be decided. The 2021 season wasn't a sport, it was a show.

The Race Director didn't follow the rules today - I've read them. Either all lapped cars should've been let through, or none. If none, the race could've gotten underway with two laps to go. If all, then there should've been a lap afterwards to get those cars catch up. That's what the rules say.

Mercedes protested the race, but not against Max. They protested for clarity from the FIA over what happened and why. They want to know why this race turned into a show, to get as much racing as possible, disregarding safety and the rules.

The result of the protest didn't explain that - in fact, it made it worse. It created precedent that means the Race Director can decide whatever rules he wants. This isn't right.

With millions of new watchers around the world, motorsport as a whole lost today. I don't understand why any new fans would want to watch our sport after what happened today because it was a shambles of inconsistency and incompetence.

2021 has been a season of incredible racing, but unfortunately a season of incredibly bad leadership and regulation too. Formula One needs to change in the future. We need a sport where the regulators are consistent and stick to the rules. There's no point racing if the sport isn't fair.

Many people dedicate their lives to Formula One. It's a massive disservice to all those working in and around F1 (drivers, mechanics, management, marketing, support, journalists, photographers, staff, pundits, and feeder series staff) to have races where this happens.

The events of this season will be remembered throughout history, and must not be allowed to happen next year.

Congratulations to Max for winning the Drivers Championship, and Mercedes for winning the constructors. But this isn't what Formula One is, and it's a disgraceful decision and a bad day for motorsport. I hope for a better season next year, and I hope that Mercedes' protest appeal holds the FIA accountable for their mistakes today, and throughout the year.

See you in March, F1. Roll on Bahrain. Roll on '22.

Re:Legendary F1 team boss Sir Frank Williams dies, aged 79 on Sunday November 28, 2021 @01:22PM (#29371355)
Frank was simply a man with a dream and he achieved it. 9 constructors' championships, 7 drivers' championships: Jones, Rosberg, Piquet, Mansell, Prost, Hill and Villeneuve.

The last decade or so of Williams has been very hard for the team, but I'm glad he saw the beginning of a return to form with a decent amount of points this season - and that podium at Spa.

I never met him, but I know some who did and they always had nothing but praise for the man. He was loved by all, and was very, very smart. His relationship with his drivers, even after leaving the position of Team Principal, was second-to-none. Williams was his family, and I'm very glad Capito/Dorilton kept the name after purchasing - it's more than just a name.

This world is thrown around a lot, but I think it's fitting here: he was a legend of the motorsport world, and a legend of the engineering world. His reputation and status in the paddock cannot be overstated. Rest in peace, Sir Frank.

Re:Against Discord Channels on Saturday November 06, 2021 @08:40AM (#29129725)
User of Discord for years here, Discord certified moderator and community admin for a content creator you might know (330k+ members).

There's a feature relatively new to Discord that'll help your issue with topic channels, and it's called Threads[1] - similar to, like, Slack's threads in the sense they're essentially mini custom channels for a specific topic of your choice.

As someone who has to decide what channels to make for a demographic of relatively young people (mostly 13-20), we just listen to what those people want. If there's enough suggestions for a channel, and there's no safeguarding issues that mods have brought up (not encouraging sending personal information - something like an #introductions channel can encourage people to send their age and location, for example) then we'll probably add it. This is because channels suggested by the community will reflect what the community want - we've never had a #technology channel suggested because we're a community of people who are fans of a content creator who plays Minecraft and is in a band, not a community of a content creator who makes videos about robots.

The Discord hate in these comments seems to be a range of simply 'Discord bad' to 'Discord isn't scrapeable by Google' - neither was IRC! Discord is IRC for the 21st century, and for large communities it is better: better moderation tools, better onboarding, better server management and it's so much easier for people to join: just go to a link in your browser. No need for a client if you don't want it.

A lot of people's experience with Discord depends on what community they're in. If you're in communities that are toxic, then you probably won't like it. If you're in communities that are welcoming, you'll probably like it. If you're in a large community and don't like how fast the discussion can be, then you probably won't like it. If you're in a very small community with just 5 people but you're after urgent help on something, that might take a while. I've been all of the possible sides of the platform and I love it.

Discord also makes me happy for what the platform itself is doing for moderation, whether that's against the amount of phishing taking place on the platform by adding platform-wide link filters for phishing links, to supporting[2] and educating[3] community moderators by curating articles and guides[2] to help out. I don't think there's any other social platform that actively talks to and supports its users like this.

This turned in a love-piece for Discord, yes, but for me it's the most important website I've ever visited. I've met so many great people and done so many cool things. I hope you can also find a website where you can do that too, whether that's Discord or otherwise.
