Turing: Opposition from the Intellectuals

From Intelligent Machinery, A Heretical TheoryThere would be great opposition from the intellectuals who were afraid of being put out of a job. It is probable though that the intellectuals would be mistaken about this. There would be plenty to do trying to understand what the machines were trying to do, i.e. in trying to keep ones intelligence up to the standard set by the machines, for it...

Delay-Tolerant Networking is a network architecture providing communications in and/or through highly stressed environments. Stressed networking environments include those with intermittent connectivity, large and/or variable delays, and high bit error rates. To provide its services, BP may be viewed as sitting at the application layer of some number of constituent networks, forming a store-carry-forward overlay network. Key capabilities of BP include: • Ability to use physical motility for the movement of data. • Ability to move the responsibility for error control from one node to another. • Ability to cope with intermittent connectivity, including cases where the sender and receiver are not concurrently present in the network. • Ability to take advantage of scheduled, predicted, and opportunistic connectivity, whether bidirectional or unidirectional, in addition to continuous connectivity. • Late binding of overlay-network endpoint identifiers to underlying constituent network addresses
Re:Cram – A Compressed RAM Service on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @06:45PM (#49985222)
This idea goes all the way back to the 1970s. There was a program that compressed your 8k ram to "double" the space. The bytes were uncompressed on the fly.

Stanislaw Lem quote related to LLMs

A man can control only what he comprehends, and comprehend only what he is able to put into words. The inexpressible therefore is unknowable. -- Stanislaw Lem "The Futurology Congress"This is certainly interesting in LLM land :-)

Re:I was impressed by Jev, please explain why I shouldn't be on Monday September 28, 2026 @02:36AM (#49874372)
JEV is rule-based programming with a better pattern matcher. Charles Forgy did this back in the 80s.
Re:What makes Lisp difficult to read? on Monday September 28, 2026 @02:00AM (#49874174)
Lisp is trivial to read. I find the C++ example hard.

A novel woven robot hand design based on traditional fabric technology.

Should robot hands use tendons in the forearm or motors in the fingers?

Recreate Eliza Using JEV?

Would it be possible to recreate ELIZA using JEV?It seems like this should be possible. You would need to ask questions about what the person brought up in a sentence, e.g. "My MOM calls all the time".Then you write JEV "rules" to construct a reply based on various probabilities.

Signal Processing Circuit to detect Hall effect?

The Hall effect is a change in the electron location due to a magnetic field. The effect is small and needs some signal processing.I want to play with the sensitivity. Do you have a circuit diagram for measuring the Hall effect?

Tsundoku.

I own about that many. Fortunately a large percentage is PDFs. Never the less I have about 200 linear feet of shelf space to hold my books in my "library" and in my home office.

The temperature is 98. The humidity is 77. That's a web bulb temperature of 92. People my age die in those conditions. Few things would be too ugly, too noisy, and bothersome as a hospital death bed due to organ failure.
Re:Open Source Software Is the Pastime of the Rich on Monday June 29, 2026 @03:43PM (#48724142)
I don't know who the uneducated individual was that posted this.

I developed open source software for 25 years even during the stretch when I was living in my car. I never made money from open source.

I bought full self-driving in September 2025 for my Model Y. I have not touched the wheel on any public road since then. It drives everywhere better than I would. It drove from Pittsburgh to Louisianna to Jacksonville and back without intervention. My wife is returning from Michigan at this moment without intervention.

So tell me why you think this doesn't work.

The best way to cut through this noise is to visit a Tesla dealer and ask for a test drive.

Must Read: Men, Machines, and Modern Times

This excellent book deals with change. It details the point that "systems cannot change within themselves"From this book it is clear that the gas car industry is doomed. Car companies cannot support the change to electric. From this book it is clear that the energy industry is doomed. Energy from hydrocarbons cannot compete with wind and solar. It is a worthwhile and enlightening read.

Implement the protocol by using drones rather than pigeons
I have 53 years of experience in programming. I taught CS at 4 Universities. I have led an open source project for 25 years. I know 60 languages.

My professional advice is "Don't learn to program".

Your question is like asking... should I learn to shoe horses?

Tesla FSD exceeds Starlink Mini speed limit

I bought FSD in September 2025. Since that time every trip has been on FSD. The only exception was during an ice storm with black ice.I bought Starlink Mini in January. I installed it in my Tesla.I just got a notification that I exceeded the Starlink Mini speed limit.Apparently FSD "hurry mode" goes too fast for Starlink. That's annoying.

Knuth Art Of Computer Programming V1 p9:[1] The values of variables m and n, can be interchanged using t = m, then m = n, then n = t. Show how the values of four variables (a,b,c,d) can be rearranged to (b,c,d,a) by a sequence of replacements. In other words, the new value of a is to be the original value of b, etc. Try to use the minimum number of...

Project Paperclip. The time has come

Long rumored that the world would end due to a goal of "maximizing paperclips" it is time to start. Every good world-ending idea needs a plan.Given an infinite number of paperclips what are the design constraints?Paperclips designs are the "string theory" of physical construction.Ideas in 1 dimensionObviously you could make a single one-dimensional line of paperclips. This raises the question...

UFOs and the Higgs Field

I got into a discussion of UFOs. The question was how would they be able to change directions and accelerate instantly. He was trying to guess what kind of propulstion they used. This is the reply I sent. The more I think about it it becomes clear that physics is wrongly constructed. The ability to manipulate space-time directly solves a lot of problems. Take, for example, the UFO problem I...
