Re:So, you want to make a game engine (2023) on Tuesday July 28, 2026 @12:24PM (#49086292)
I think we have to try these things at least once. My own attempt to write a javascript framework ended with me realising that I needed to put more effort into planning and research, which was a valuable lesson for me.
Re:Using ThinkPad T480 as a mobile phone on Sunday July 26, 2026 @03:36PM (#49061614)
Yes, whoever can shrink this down to the size of something that would fit in your pocket would make a killing. Imagine not only being able to make phone calls, but use productivity software and even browse the internet.
Force yourself to use git with the command line for as long as it takes to not confuse you with day to day operations. Then choose whatever interface you want to make your life easier.
That's crazy! Imagine what The The and The Who would sound like? Not The The and The Who, but the The The and the The Who your comment alludes to. Or would the original ones be called The The The and The The Who?
Eek I bet there are a few people at Instructure who won't be getting much sleep tonight!
Re:Ask HN: How did you learn to code? on Thursday January 01, 2026 @05:37AM (#46452971)
Playing with AMOS basic on the Amiga in the mid 90s, then later with pascal in college. Eventually came back to it with web development as a career.
Re:Is GitHub Down? on Thursday December 11, 2025 @09:37AM (#46231912)
Yeah it is for me
Software developer of 17 years without any form of IT degree, I do have a degree though.
Re:Re: My AI skeptic friends are all nuts on Sunday June 08, 2025 @03:07AM (#44215181)
This is the digital divide, where students from more wealthy backgrounds can afford access to better LLM subscriptions, and are able to achieve more "academically".
Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed reading
Re:Was your degree really worth it? on Thursday April 13, 2023 @11:36AM (#35557082)
I'm very happy I did my degree and think back on my time in university with fond memories. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I was there, every lesson, essay and project, it is because of this I came out with a very high grade.

My lifelong career as a software developer has absolutely nothing to do with the subject of my degree, but it set me up in ways that I would have never learned on my own.

Re:Norway: Landlines will no longer be supported on Thursday December 01, 2022 @02:14AM (#33813285)
Things seem to be changing. We're with BT and would have had to pay a lot extra for a phone line.
Re:Ask HN: What are your “scratch own itch” projects? on Sunday November 13, 2022 @09:49AM (#33583532)
A little startpage/bookmark solution to go on my home server, listing the services that run on it...

Hahaha yes indeed! Although I'm pretty sure they know everything there is to know about me anyway.
Seems broken anyway. I requested it look for my phone number but never received a confirmation code.
Re:Ask HN: Do people not have hobbies anymore? on Wednesday October 26, 2022 @11:28AM (#33345190)
Totally. My wife started baking as a hobby and almost everyone she spoke to said variations of "you could make a packet selling these".

So I made her website and she tried making a business out of it, ruined the hobby for her forever.

Re:I wish my web server were in the corner of my room on Tuesday October 11, 2022 @04:33PM (#33168874)
I have a cron job that updates my domain's records at digitalocean every hour via their API. But in practice my ISP only actually seems to issue a new IP if I restart my router.
Re:What are your most used self-hosted applications? on Wednesday May 04, 2022 @12:17PM (#31262519)
Shameless plug but if you are looking for a homepage to list all the apps you self-host, I made one called Jump that you might get find useful...

Re:I started a paper website business on Tuesday December 14, 2021 @12:39PM (#29554538)
I once made a website called bobswhitetrousers.com, absolutely noone ever visited.
Re:Why time “speeds up” as we get older (2019) on Thursday November 04, 2021 @01:40PM (#29110231)
I always just thought it was down to a unit of time relative to your age. So as a 1 year old a year represent your entire life, so seems really long. As a 40 year old a year is just a fraction of your life, so seems much less significant.
Re:Pink Floyd's Young Lust – explained and demystified on Thursday October 14, 2021 @05:06PM (#28870121)
Just spent over an hour listening to these and I've only scratched the surface. Absolutely fascinating, thanks for sharing!
