Sounds like they made the right move. Hiring a non-technical for employee #1 doesn't sounds like a smart move, given that the founders should be doing any sales/bizdev at the early stages.

You should give a 25% discount credit for every failed match, which is not usable until they reach 100% discount. Meaning, 4 failed matches gives a free match credit. If a match occurs before 4 consecutive failed matches, then the aggregate discount is cleared.
Re:Ask HN: How to compensate a co-founder who leaves after shipping MVP?
on Monday August 13, 2012 @10:47PM (#4379150)
Give your co-founder (1/48)(50% equity)(# of months working on the mvp). This is basically saying that your co-founders 50% stake vests monthly over 4 years. If they've worked 4 months on the mvp, 4 months worth of equity is released to them. If they leave, the remaining shares go back to the company.
For future reference, you really should have figured out the arrangement with your co-founder prior to working on ur mvp.

Glad to hear! We believe that everybody is deserving of an experience that makes them feel valued and appreciated. No more maintaining the status quo!

Isn't this pretty much what a consulting firm does?

My suggestion would be to break down whatever you are doing into smaller tasks. Instead of thinking, I need to do this...and this...and this...and this...and this...and this in order to complete...change your mindset to "I just need to do this small task to complete". Once you complete the small task, then move on to the next one. Each goal will be smaller, so you should have more frequent completions. Start from there and work your way up
Re:Ask HN: Need advice on quitting a job.

Just to make the conversation a little more interesting, I will play devils advocate here. Maybe the issue here isn't the company, but you. I personally find it hard to believe that you can't find "something better" to do at a startup. There are ALWAYS things to do at startups, and just because it's not within your normal scope of work, it doesn't mean you can't work on it. If you're completing your regular work, and you want to do something more (Ie. coding), and it benefits the company, I hardly doubt founders would be against it. What it sounds like to me, is that you are lacking any initiative and are diddling your thumbs waiting for tasks to be handed to you. If that's the case, you might be better off going to a corporate setting. Another thought that comes to mind, maybe you aren't given coding tasks because you haven't proven you are capable of doing them? If this is the case, then it's an opportunity to prove em wrong. Either way, the experiences you gain at a startup are what YOU make of it. Again, what it comes down to is initiative. Take it!
If you do decide to leave, find a job before you quit. Your negotiating power is much greater with a job in hand.
P.S I know nothing about you, so just take my comments for what it's worth.

I'd go with amusely. It's shorter and I find it easier to say.

My thoughts exactly. Getting no equity, and being in a position where you essentially have the same risk as the founders, doesn't make....much....sense.
