Re:If you can use open source, you can build hardware on Wednesday September 06, 2023 @10:02AM (#37405298)
Eh. As a counter point.

I live in Montana, have a degree in an unrelated field but still work on IOT projects.

I work mostly from home or private office and have never needed to drive for course of work.

Not sure how you exist in Montana without driving.

If you’d like to move into that field, it’s certainly not easy but it is possible.

Ask HN: Tools for Offline Log Analysis

Hi, needing a little help here.I am looking for a tool (paid or free) that will assist with analyzing logs for events that are out of the ordinary. When I google this, I get several tools that are designed for analyzing logs from a server. I am looking for something that I can input a log from an offline application (in this case an IOT device) and the tool will help look for anomalies.Does...

Yup - also you need to know both fields hence why it pays more.

I gave away some broken tools on Craigslist once and had a similar experience. 2 people showed up really happy, one was entitled. Didn’t really scare me off though.

1) that was fun. The explanations next to each parameter are helpful to know what each slider modifies.

2) the way you advertise your app and ask for feedback is welcoming. It feels honest.

Re:Leading someone with more years of experience than my age on Wednesday December 30, 2020 @06:30PM (#25587609)
Leadership is about getting people from point a to point b. Generally to do that you need trust, a good idea of where point a,b are, and what the path between them looks like.

Age is a component of trust, but only a small one and very dependent on the situation.

If you want to be leading someone who has more experience than you, best be sure you have trust and a rock solid understanding of the path you need to be on.

Thanks!

I’me working on an embedded project and would like to setup a CI/CD pipeline. Do you have any recommended resources?

Can personally voice for the Nordic series chips. Their Sdk has allowed for some of the most pleasant coding I have ever done.
Re:American Airlines Is Quietly Bringing Back the 737Max on Tuesday November 10, 2020 @01:15PM (#25049107)
Amen. If we don’t focus on the root cause it will be harder to solve the problem. And understand that we have actually solved it.

(Student Pilot and Mechanical Engineer here)

Wait what? Uart is active low. So it’s not to hard to bump the 12V down to 5V, but what happened with the -12V?
Re:Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads on Tuesday September 29, 2020 @11:10AM (#24628752)
At least in the states. Most airlines I fly have an option for a premium seat that costs more and has more leg room.

I have $300+ in Apple mouse and trackpads connected to my computer but I still find myself using the $30 dell mouse that I got as a backup.
Re:The End of Spectrum Scarcity (2004) on Saturday September 05, 2020 @12:21PM (#24384701)
If there is more capacity available, people will use it.

For instance, I happily stream videos and FaceTime over cellular quite a bit now. Even though I was plenty happy without that capability and don’t really mind when the cell service isn’t good enough for it to work.

Non autopilot cars crash into parked police vehicles too. It’s common enough that officers are trained a prepared for such an event.

Is this maybe a reflection on the inherent safety risk of parking on the side of the road?

The robots are accurate, but the cables are not. Pick and place robots deal with uniformly sized parts that come in nice reels.

Cables and tape are not as uniform and have a tendency to move in random directions.

Re:The Idea of Entropy Has Led Us Astray on Friday July 03, 2020 @10:20AM (#23724283)
Entropy is only kinda about probability.

>How can we talk about the uncertainty of a system that is in a single, well known, predictable state.

The system we are usually talking about is orders of magnitude larger than the uncertainty. Think a liter of gasoline in an engine vs the position of a single atom. While we might not know the trajectory of the atom, we have a pretty good idea how the collective atoms that make up the gasoline will function.

Yeah, I flew between 4 different states last week. Montana, Washington, California & Minnesota. Definitely very regional, even between Orange County and LA for instance.

Some places are full sit down at the bar is acceptable (no masks) vs. getting kicked out of a take-out joint for not wearing a mask (Los Angles).

Yeah.. and most people understand why nuclear weapons are dangerous. Meanwhile the internet silently takes over our attention span and values.
Well, it’s hard to find capable people for grad school. It’s not just a selection to pick some form of the best. To succeed as a grad school you need people that can make discoveries and play the academic game.
Hey, I’m in Bozeman too. We should get lunch sometime.
Re:Apple engineer in need of OSS maintainers on Tuesday April 21, 2020 @11:10AM (#22935580)
You’re on the right track. Find a different job where they respect your projects and move on. You don’t really have much leverage right now as your current place doesn’t have much inventive to change their policy and doesn’t seem to respect your requests.

Ask HN: What are good resources on writing a descriptive blog post?

I am going to be documenting a couple projects in the form of blog posts or online writeup. I'm doing this to practice writing and boost my resume/portfolio a bit.Are there any resources that describe what makes a good technical writeup? Im looking to target the text to a lay person or technologist and don't want it to sound academic.

Hate speech can have harmful physiological effects on those it targets.

2 * 4 = 8 so the last significant digit should be an ‘8’
Advanced microscopes can distinguish individual atoms. This is relatively trivial if you have the correct setup. Search atomic force microscope and HOPG (highly ordered pyrolytic graphene).

This wasn’t the correct setup though to do that. Presumably the reason you can see a single atom is because there is only one present, ie if there was a second one next to it you wouldn’t necessarily be able to see the difference in the photograph.

Global entry included pre check.
Typically the factor of safety is not that high in the aerospace industry.
I sit on my phone all the time, take it in the shower, frequently drop it(on accident). So I guess the price of the phone doesn’t factor too much into how I physically treat it.

Regarding the back pocket, it’s just easier and a matter of personal preference.
