Yep, wild monkeys, civet cats and monitor lizards are regulars outside our living room window in a fairly dense wild rainforest.

A point of note - I do believe there a homeless in Singapore. However, I believe what you're referring to is likely workers napping around lunch time. This is very common with a lot of the people who work outside in the day time, under trees, on sidewalks etc.,

Thanks!

Also, we're focused on SMB omni-channel product based businesses, we're not as focused on super-high volume DTC brands -- Skubana is a good option if that's your business profile.

Hey Joe,

We're attempting to solve all the problems you just mentioned - we've definitely still got a lot to learn.

I would love the opp to talk further and understand your business / pain point - see if we can help or point you in the right direction.

Just to clarify - this is not the case in Singapore. A local director is required if the directors do not have work visas, but the companies can be wholly owned by foreigners.
Re:Singapore, where have all your talent gone? on Tuesday November 06, 2012 @12:47AM (#4747380)
Hey Ash, been meaning to write a blog post as someone who moved their startup from NZ to Singapore - it's not quite as dire as you supposed.

Firstly, I would never recommend anyone to get the Entrepass - best thing to do is just to register a business and apply for an EP pass as an employee of said company. Admittedly in this scenario you would need a local director - but services for this shouldn't run over $1000/annum.

The next statement about spending $100,000+ per year, is again - not true if you are on the standard EP pass.

Rents for accomodation are, however as you stated expensive, we're currently paying $5400 SGD / month for a 3 bdroom in a nice condo in central Singapore.

However, for 2800-3500 / month you can find 3-4 bedroom places that are lacking condo facilities but are more than suitable for living.

If you have any additional questions or queries please don't hesitate.

Also, don't take this as a glowing endorsement of SG - there are plenty of downsides to this island nation for tech.

Re:Singapore Still the Best Place for Entrepreneurs on Saturday February 18, 2012 @12:25PM (#3607055)
Ah, you're referring to the $3000 deposit + $3000/year requirement that professional nominated "Directors" require to setup the business. Yes, this can be an issue if you do not have relationships with any locals.

I believe many countries have restrictions on foreigners incorporating without a local director/shareholder?

But yes, it is a little bit annoying. What we ended up doing is getting a mentor/investor to become a nominee director.

Re:Singapore Still the Best Place for Entrepreneurs on Saturday February 18, 2012 @12:23PM (#3607047)
I setup a business in Singapore last week.

We used a professional services firm - they cover all the Gov't requirements regarding minutes, company secretary etc.,

Was SGD$800

Re:Ask HN: Cheap VPS Providers? on Sunday December 12, 2010 @03:22AM (#1996762)
webbynode.com is pretty cheap, and fantastic for deployment etc.,
Have a look at GitY if you haven't its a pretty neat Gitx replacement (in my opinion...)
Re:Ask HN: Non-coding, single founders? on Sunday July 04, 2010 @05:32AM (#1485434)
I think, (being in the echo chamber that is YC) we forget the number of successful businesses that have been created, since time immemorial by people that _cannot_ code.

Whilst I agree that you probably couldn't solve a hugely technical problem without a strong technical team, A _HUGE_ number of recent well known, "startup wins", have been from business model innovations.

I am by no means successful, but I am working on it. I have outsourced some development, and in the development of some ideas, taught myself to be a pretty sufficient programmer, just roll with it.

Your lack of technical ability is just one constraint of many that you will face, constraints are good, they shape your decisions.

And of course the benefit is that getting out their, with your hacked, outsourced, barely-holding together prototype, selling your ass off is going to go _along_ way in impressing those people with complimentary skill-sets that you might want to partner with.

Shit, if your a good entrepreneur, you will work it out as you go, learning, hiring and partnering with whoever you need.

As Mark Suster says, JFDI

And good luck

just a note, if you go to the top level of this directory on which the blog sits there's another site, which may of been the 2 days work. As a 23yr old still interested in where the millions came from...

Re:Ask HN: Review my new learning website: Crunch Course on Sunday January 10, 2010 @07:08PM (#1043938)
One of the first things I would think about is charging.

I am sure there is a definition for it - but the act of paying some money - whether it is incentivised by returning a percentage of the money dependent on commitment/progress etc, or is taken as a running cost, has the effect of increasing dedication/loyalty and filtering out the people who like the idea of learning it but aren't willing to actually learn (or so i hypothesize...)

If you haven't - have a look at Clayton Christensen's "Disrupting Class", "The Online Learning Idea Book" - Patti Shank and "New Designs for Early Education" - by IDEO (its aimed at early childhood but some of the ideas revolving around increasing user involvement are really interesting). They delve into some extremely interesting ideas, not all relevant but theres some gold in them.

And I have not done nearly enough research into it, but I believe an understanding of Game Mechanics and how effective Social Interactions work on web would probably paramount to the effectiveness of this web app (theres a tonne of this info out there - think zynga/gowalla for learning).

Just my 2cents

also a "next" or "random" or "suggested similar movies" button on the video page would be extremely useful also (instead of having to navigate back to the homepage)
