Re:Why The 99% Should Protest Against Y Combinator

I think the bottom line remains this: Cloudant gets to choose with whom they do business. They, and pg, were both proud of the fact that they chose Monsanto - I think this exactly the kind of thing that 'the 99%' are protesting

by the way, the original article (now) opens with "Algorithmic trading, including high frequency trading (HFT)" and not "Algorithmic trading, also known as high frequency trading (HFT)"

Yea, I think you can ask it in a way that's not abrasive - "Do you feel like you have enough interesting work to do?". I think the thing is that that can be a common question, and it lets people know you care about how engaged they are.

Actually I think singleton is the default: http://static.springsource.org/spring/docs/3.0.x/spring-fram...
I didn't know about the other scopes though

Aren't singletons the whole goal of Spring?

I don't think the author is to blame at all. I do stuff like this all the time - I'm working on something, google for it, download and keep on moving. I use google constantly throughout the day, and trust the top result to be authentic. As it turns out, that trust may be unwarranted.

That's the point - you don't learn the whole stack, you let your framework manage it.

Re:Hate Java? You’re fighting the wrong battle.

There a lot of powerful frameworks in Java that make application development fun and easy (e.g. Camel, Spring, Hibernate). Java can replicate many of the popular features of other languages - anonymous functions are duplicated by single-method interfaces and anonymous inner classes. I say use the best tools available, and Java has still got to be one of those.
Re:Help Ron Conway Abolish Stock Option Taxes in SF

I agree completely. We just gave a big tax break to Twitter (and everyone else who happened to be in the area) - I don't want to see SF city hall turn in to a mini D.C. run by business lobbyists looking for deals.
This whole argument that "business is going to leave unless we cut their taxes" strikes me as just false. San Francisco's economy is booming, and there's a lot of talent here because it's a great place to live

I live in San Francisco, and I voted for the recent sit-lie ordinance. I would've have done so had I not recently been working in the civic center area, and come face to face with the dirty reality of homelessness. The sidewalks smell like urine, people are belligerent and drunk or passed out often. I was punched in the face while waiting for a bus outside of work. A lot of the opposition to sit lie used the rallying cry "Sidewalks are for people". I agree; they're for me too. And I don't want a bunch of drunks sleeping on my sidewalks; dirtying them up
