Re:US funding for global internet freedom 'effectively gutted' on Thursday February 19, 2026 @02:50AM (#47071063)
These programs were largely about ensuring that American propaganda can reach people in Iran or similar places. This is no longer considered an issue, and the focus is now on reducing young American’s exposure to alternative geopolitical narratives. This strategy also aligns with the US government’s trend of aggressive privatization; an israeli billionaire will happily pay for the privilege of content moderation on american social media platforms, saving the tax payer money. Win win.

Probably sometime around the early 1800s

Malcolm Harris wrote a book “Palo Alto” about how this culture took root in SV long before it was called Silicon Valley: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/may/10/palo-alto-book...

Re:Global Sumud Flotilla Tracker on Tuesday September 30, 2025 @07:24AM (#45424186)
The Spanish naval ship that is supposed to be escorting the flotilla is not shown in the list on this tracker.

On MarineTraffic it hasn’t updated its position in 6 days: https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:56...

If only somebody would enforce international law
These planes are huge pieces of shit. No country should be spending money buying these from the US / Lockheed Martin.

If it’s critical infrastructure it should be nationalized

Apparently we’re going to bury our heads in the sand and prevent any discussion of the topic!
This is like paying doctors to say only evil foreign cigarettes cause cancer. Buy American!
This is laughable, even with your depiction of the events. The candidate in question (Georgescu) had a very popular platform, and was supported by a large bases or Romanians on the left and right.

He was, however, opposed to further expansion of NATO.

If these ideas are too scary to let general public even consider, then democracies have to step in and censor the media. And that begins by banning TikTok, the largest platform where a narrative like this can bypass the existing power structures.

The US has one of the largest contributions of all time: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655
This was mentioned in "The Brothers" about Allan and John Foster Dulles who directed the CIA to collude with right-wing French officers hoping to overthrow Charles de Gaulle.

That would be Dwight D. Eisenhower and his secretary of state John Foster Dulles.

They could have turned to the second place contestants from their sham primary election which was held this Spring and largely ignored by the media.

haha I think people aren't getting the humour here
This would be relevant if the US were a functioning democracy. But the defence contractors have already seen the trillions to be made in boosting fears of Chinese AI and will, as usual, have 100x more say in policy than the electorate.

Even the employees of Google, Amazon, OpenAI don't realise yet that they are working for military contractors suckling off the teat of the US gov.

Why was the US interfering in Ukraine's elections and oil and gas industry ten years ago? Why was it funding neo-nazi groups in eastern Ukraine?

Russia doesn't want war with Europe, it wants to sell natural gas.
OpenAI has an early lead in the AI battle, and their ChatGPT brand is already a household name synonymous with LLMs for most people. This is the first time there’s been a real threat to Google’s monopoly in a decade.

Never mind they don’t have a profitable business model yet. OpenAI will pay a premium to Apple to keep their lead and remain the dominant brand in this new space in hopes they can someday supplant internet search. OpenAI seems to be at the point where they’ll burn billions in cash trying to join the ranks of the big tech monopolies. If they can reach Google’s status, they’ll be able to change ChatGPT from its “ten blue links” stage into something worse (but monetizable), but only if they can achieve dominant and defensive market share. Nobody seems to know how to pull off this last trick yet.

But in the meantime, a little competition in search (Google) is hugely beneficial to the largest gatekeeper of mobile users (Apple).

>> Texas’ oilfield regulator, the Texas Railroad Commission, has yet to offer…

can anyone explain why the Railroad Commission regulates oilfeilds? is it because there aren’t many railroads in Texas?

Re:macOS Sequoia Preview on Monday June 10, 2024 @03:47PM (#40637917)
Every release is an LTS version, with support for about 8 years.

The current stable release of macOS (10.14 Sonoma) supports all Macs introduced in 2017 and later.

…and like that, it’s flagged and gone. Discussion averted, thanks mods!

Creepy, low-quality and overpriced! The Google hardware trifecta.
