Re:Ask HN: Stay productive while commuting offline on Thursday February 28, 2019 @01:04AM (#19269293)
I would say: don't be productive. Use that time to read books you never took time to, watch shows you didn't either.

In my opinion, being productive is not about squeezing as much as we can in our days, but being in the right mindset and taking breaks.

I don't agree with the tweet. I think that on the contrary, it brings attention to the permissions that are granted.

Way too many people blindly accept those without reading.

Putting a joke there might draw their attention so they actually read what's in it..

Re:Ask HN: Why Is Gmail Spam Filtering .gov? on Friday February 22, 2019 @06:23PM (#19230122)
Gmail filters way more than it is supposed to do. You can have a valid DKIM and DMARC and still be filtered out if your mail server doesn't rank high enough in their list.

And I'd like to specify that I'm talking about inter-personal casual communication - nothing commercial, not link, no attachments.

I have to request a proof of reading to be sure my emails get through with GMail.

Re:Ask HN: What's the Best Non-Apple Web Dev Computer? on Thursday February 21, 2019 @02:09PM (#19219655)
I'm really pleased with the Dell XPS line - and in term of OS I would recommend Fedora or Debian.
I believe that your CLI tools are not set up to use your personal VPN - so they default to your company one and get MITM attacked.
Re:Putsack – Anonymous Paste and Encryption Tool on Tuesday February 19, 2019 @06:42PM (#19204161)
Thank - you - so - much.

I was precisely looking for a better service than pastebin - specifically when it comes to APIs

Does it have a public repo though?

Re:Steamosaic: Generate a mosaic of your steam account on Thursday February 14, 2019 @04:46PM (#19166360)
Hey - it fails:

Cross-Origin Request Blocked: The Same Origin Policy disallows reading the remote resource at https://us-central1-steamosaic.cloudfunctions.net/mosaic. (Reason: CORS header ‘Access-Control-Allow-Origin’ missing).

Re:Pretend Climate Change Is Caused by Aliens on Wednesday February 13, 2019 @07:45PM (#19158669)
I knew it! I KNEW IT!

Aliens are terraforming (or rather exoplanetforming) earth to make it habitable for them!

That would be the best thing that could ever happen.

Refusal of service?

I don't know anything that would make people run to another service faster.

Hey, yes, you should totally tell them you're waiting to hear from another company and will gladly get back to them as soon as possible.

That might even push them to step up their offer.

Re:Show HN: Tail -f Your Cloudflare Logs on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @05:25PM (#19090612)
Nice project! Just wanted to mention: Logflare is free, but CloudFlare workers are not. Thanks for sharing!
Contemplating your paycheck and do what you like on the side - that's my way of coping with contractor work.

But I know it can't be long term though.

Comments are hell - so I made this component that stores them in localStorage - so you can only see your comments. Was for fun.

Is this an ad?
Re:Ask HN: When did you lose control of your inbox? on Saturday January 26, 2019 @12:19PM (#19007197)
Unroll.me is owned by Rakuten, and they clearly state that they extract stats and trends from your transactional and commercial emails.
Re:Ask HN: When did you lose control of your inbox? on Friday January 25, 2019 @07:24PM (#19003870)
Not really - some webmail clients act like they have one but they almost never works.

The other way is when you create an account somewhere, first thing you have to do is to go in their privacy and / or notifications settings. Stop it at the source.

Re:Ask HN: When did you lose control of your inbox? on Friday January 25, 2019 @06:48PM (#19003711)
I didn't.

Or rather I took back control. I have now 2 email addresses - one for humans, one for the rest.

And I systematically unsubscribe from every email I don't want to receive (gosh I miss Europe for that), I delete everything that I have no reason to keep, and I archive anything that needs to be kept.

It demands a lot of effort at the beginning. But now my inbox is useful again.

Re:Ask HN: I love my work. I want to quit on Friday January 25, 2019 @05:51PM (#19003386)
This is / was my issue with work.

I (used to) invest my self a lot in my work. I didn't count the hours, was underpaid, was doing 4 times more than my position described.

And I was promised a lot of things! I was thoroughly thanked by my immediate management. I was promised a raise and a promotion. But ultimately they always expected me to bend when my suggestions didn't fit with their immediate vision.

I left (and did they cried about it, telling me I was wonderful etc.), and I landed way better jobs, way better paid.

I figured that I was the problem, for accepting those conditions. Why would a company want me to work less for more money? When I'm already working so much, for so little.

I stopped doing that. I refused offers because they couldn't offer enough (like expecting a lead dev / senior dev for the pay of a junior), even if I loved their product or company!

So my advice is leave. And don't even look behind.

Re:Show HN: DIY DDNS with Bash and Cloudflare APIs on Wednesday January 23, 2019 @12:19PM (#18980226)
Ohai o/

I needed a Dynamic DNS service for a couple of devices I had in my DMZ, but most free services requires you to confirm the hostname manually regularly, or include some kind of restriction.

I use Cloudflare for some domains, and I dug in their APIs to make my own DDNS.

It should be easily to adapt it to fit other DNS APIs, feel free to contribute!

Re:Ask HN: Would it be nice to know who upvoted you? on Tuesday January 22, 2019 @05:49PM (#18973445)
I see your point.

Let's say that my consumption of HN is not social media-y - I don't care about the people that post, it took me 3 days to see your answer because I was checking for answers on another thread, and my focus on HN is content, not people.

I do understand what you mean. IMO, HN is closer to crowd sourced information than personal branding and personality cults that I see in 'social media' sites.

But there I am, answering to your comment. I am dooooooomed.

Cool, thank you!
Ohai HN.

Out of curiosity one day I started grabbing from my devices / servers logs the login attempts that were made.

From there I made a list of the IPs that tried to log in the most, and the user that was used.

I made a nice map that you can see on the repo - and feel free to suggest a use / improvement - or to contribute with your logs too (just the IPs and users, not your original logs files - see the README).

Cheers.

Re:Ask HN: Would it be nice to know who upvoted you? on Thursday January 17, 2019 @09:53PM (#18936672)
I'm not on social media for a reason, that kind of features is part of the reasons I stay away from them.

So no. If someone really wants to engage with me, they can leave a comment... that I will see or not.

Re:Ask HN: Should Qt be considered in the place of electron? on Wednesday January 16, 2019 @03:05PM (#18924504)
Well, if I can ditch chromium, I'm all for it. Will look into it.
