I only see that EmbeddingGemma 2 is Apache 2.

"EmbeddingGemma 2 is made by Google DeepMind and released under Apache 2.0. This is an independent project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Google."

Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @07:21AM (#50069911)
I don't think he is saying the person becomes obsolete, just the stuff you 'learned' on that LLM because the LLM maker decided to change it.
Running an LLM to delete files seems like overkill to me. Couldn't a cron job do the same thing? Or is the clutter just put into random places, which, if true, seems like bad software, which then leads me to consider the output of LLMs in general, which then leads me to wonder why are we doing this?

But, I'm just wondering.

Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:08PM (#50064821)
From the article by Rich Hickey that is a counter point "'AI' is not a tool"

"You are only a software update from everything you've 'learned' being rendered obsolete by the latest algorithm. "

Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:13AM (#50055265)
Better code allows you to write new features with less risk to disrupting your current features.

Software design and architecture is about creating a system that can be built well, run well, and modify well.

If you just throw things together without thought you get an unmaintainable mess.

Not sure why you are referencing this Wikipedia article and I would hate to infer your meaning. Please tell me more.
Re:No Sloptober on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @08:12PM (#49809988)
I disagree. A program/repository is not a big chunk of text. It's more like logic to perform a particular function represented in text which is a symbol of language.

"To think that reducing entropy/complexity in a system is some inherently human capability is both anthropo-centric and full of hubris."

Humans invented LLMs and Agents etc, designed, programmed, etc. etc. Seems they are more an extension of humans -- tools that rely on humans.

An LLM/Agent left to it's self on a code base does cause entropy. I've only ever seen them not cause entropy on the first prompt.

But not as obvious is why you consider it low-effort. Indeed, one must be able to articulate their dissatisfaction in order to propagate consensus and thereby action.
Re:No Sloptober on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @06:01PM (#49808784)
Can you go deeper here? What do you mean you are okay delegating your own gaps? Specifically I am interested in what happens when you can't afford to delegate anymore.
Re:No Sloptober on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:58PM (#49808754)
Same feeling about low effort pro-AI posts. Low effort comments too. Low-effort comments being just reactionary one-liners. What do you mean by "low-effort anti AI posts"? HN front page used to be more diverse topics that were generally interesting. Now it seems like it's "Hey Anthropic just released a new model" "Hey OpenAI just did X with model that is questionable" Or "X did AI X with X-y thing". Low-effort is for real a problem.
Re:No Sloptober on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:33PM (#49808437)
Can you please expound on the different ways "decent engineers are utilising LLMs in a professional capacity"? A case study would be great to read to understand better the value of LLMs and how developers use it effectively. Thanks in advance!!
Re:No Sloptober on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:31PM (#49808410)
Can you expound on why "This is one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever read."? I think a deeper discussion into the capability of agents to decrease entropy would be very valuable.
"For its part, Apple says on its support page that users should "consider those around you where conversations may be private or sensitive." The broader message Apple seems to be sending is: Prepare for a world where everyday devices are always listening in."

Just stop. Who is going to think to take off their watch that they always wear and are now in a co-dependent relationship with? Or put their phone in a faraday cage. Are we suppose to ask the guy at the next table with his apple watch and iphone super max listener: "Excuse me sir, but could you leave so we aren't recorded?"

I went to a city park the other day and the amount of Flock cameras was absolutely mind boggling. Not even a large park. Not pointed at the parking lot but at playgrounds, tennis courts, and walking paths.

Re:Show HN: Voice Age Verification on Tuesday June 16, 2026 @09:37AM (#48555130)
Reliable Age Verification is nearly impossible and your antecdote gives weight to that assertion. Your comment brought my mind to voice actors. They easily change their voices. Deep fakes also come to mind.

So what is a solution? Parents. What about those that don't have parents? Surely they have guardians. Adults who guide the next generation instead of delegating them to technology.

Ok; That's good feedback. Job may not have been the right word. I admit I didn't pass my comment through an LLM, so thank you for helping me improve and push harder. ;)
Re:Please Use AI on Friday May 29, 2026 @11:15AM (#48324194)
It's not about making them be responsible for me or offloading my problems or them making me better.

It's about community. And real people often like to help. If your circle doesn't, find someone who does. Find a community.

I enjoy helping people be better, to reach new heights in their personal lives. It's about relationships.

My thoughts aren't about "abdication of personal responsibility" or "Shifting blame".

It's about humanity and people and community.

Re:Please Use AI on Friday May 29, 2026 @11:10AM (#48324087)
Less about the draft/writing and more about human interaction on all levels. I don't see how AI becoming a mentor or a coach to push me harder is helpful in the long run. I would be missing out on opportunity to learn from real life experience. I'd rather listen to my brother or my coworker or whomever human, pick their brain, riff, dig deeper, understand their perspective from life experiences and actual meaningful thought and moral compass than have AI (take intelligence with a grain of salt) influence me.

> Endless hours of putting soul into your shirt? I mean, good for you, but it sounds like your team wasn’t so stoked about that as you are. So I’m not sure you can blame AI for that one.

I think you may have misread the parent comment.

And currently AI has no creativity nor does it enhance a human's creativity. It simply regurgitates and at best the human user can lie to themselves that they did it. Look at the "rinse and repeat" of animated movies. Humanity has been in a cycle of regurgitation for quite some time and AI is only going to make it worse.

>Take, for example, speeches. I do not let AI write my speeches. But my speeches are better for having been critiqued by AI. But the result is still my speech. My thoughts, my ideas, my words, and my meaning. Just improved with rounds of feedback about where it fell flat, where I was likely to lose people, and so on. Feedback that I had to fix.

> So do not let AI write your speeches. But do use it to push yourself harder.

This used to be the job of our friends, families, and coworkers: To push us harder. I think we are losing something.

Re:New York Passes Tax on the Ultra-Wealthy on Thursday May 28, 2026 @01:22PM (#48312303)
some states have homestead exemptions on property tax where your primary residence gets a discount on property taxes (eg Texas); is this effectively the same thing? or is NYC limited to unoccupied second homes instead of those being rented out?

> "All writing is homogenizing, slowly turning into the same slop. You see the same patterns everywhere, “it’s not x, it’s why”, em-dashes, or why not: “you’re not imagining it, the problem is real”. "

I think it says something about Humans in a way. I've heard it different ways throughout my life: everything is derivitive. And LLMs are riffing on that conformity.

We are taught bland writing in school. Praised for conforming for sounding "just right". Five paragraphs: perfect. Three points: right on.

Consumers devour easy reads. You hit all the "standard" plot points for my favorite genre: I'll buy it!

And so these LLMs are trained on the mass production and produce, well, mass production.
