If you want a file-based cache, yes.

Re:Disassembly Required on Friday December 23, 2016 @11:18PM (#13248563)
if your source code is compiled without symbols, or if your elf executable is missing the section headers, or you've run strip, the disassembler will not give you the function names or the variable names.

Probably because most of the commonly used components are maintained separately.

Re:Limitations of the GET method in HTTP on Tuesday March 03, 2015 @02:07AM (#9136474)
it would also require a long poll, but is definitely useful for certain situations where a synchronous operation would take too long.

Re:100% Unemployment: on keeping busy when the robots take over on Tuesday February 17, 2015 @08:40PM (#9066513)
autonomous vehicles and biomechanical grabbing hands are completely different than engineering software. The aforementioned tasks, while an impressive feat (especially in computer vision), are programmable tasks. To create "robots" that can engineer/create new software without a software engineer is not going to happen in this lifetime.
Re:100% Unemployment: on keeping busy when the robots take over on Tuesday February 17, 2015 @06:40PM (#9065979)
Too much credit given to "robots". I see this coming from Hollywood, not Hacker News.
and how about water, sewage, gas?
as if electricity is the only utility, right?
I can dump my cable company if they piss me off. I can't do that with my utility companies
Re:Dumb Ideas in Computer Security (2005) on Friday January 02, 2015 @07:56PM (#8829462)
I still prefer to go by the Jargon File's definition of "hacker" - "A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and stretching their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary." or as defined by (RFC) 1392, the Internet Users' Glossary - "A person who delights in having an intimate understanding of the internal workings of a system, computers and computer networks in particular."

In which case, hacking IS cool.

Re:The End of Gangs on Wednesday December 31, 2014 @09:54PM (#8821986)
In my opinion, it's simpler. Gang culture is cyclic. It's simply not "cool" to be a gangster nowadays, therefore insecure kids don't aspire to be gangsters. But like all things, in time, it will be "in" again.
