Re:Does fermion doubling make the universe not a computer? on Wednesday January 31, 2024 @02:47PM (#39208407)
Why argue much about a single level of simulation when you could instead try the majesty of an infinite tower of simulations within simulations. Why would it stop at a single level ? What is the nature of consciousness within a simulated universe ? What is the nature of consciousness within an infinite tower of simulated universes ? Think big, think weird. It's nearly the weekend. Peace.
I find that when I remember, and remember to keep on focusing on a visual metaphor I have for running form and economy the perceived effort doesn't change but suddenly you're going 1 or 2 minutes per mile faster. It's absolutely magic.
Re:Ask HN: Best way to host a website for 500 years? on Saturday October 23, 2021 @06:13AM (#28967105)
In a cave on the far side of the moon. Or, encode the information to be preserved in the DNA of various types of creatures on earth who between them various different number of individuals, lifespan (some very short, some very long) ubiquity across the planet, vulnerability to ecological change. Cockroaches, long living trees, plankton, mosquitoes and dare I say it, humans.
Agreed about Lost in Music. One of my absolute favourite songs anyway, and then Mark E Smith-ified. It's louche and grand, and rakish and whimsical. I saw the Fall 3 times, the first being at a festival when I wandered into a tent at random. His words and performance did something inexplicable to me almost immediately. Was he having a seizure on stage ? Is he ok ? Is he all there ? I don't know but I've got tears running down my cheeks and I have to see the Fall again as soon as possible. And then on stage in small venues, just electric. The combination of again the vocal performance but with the kraut rock / Can guitars. They were tight. A tight band with highly repetitive songs and stream of consciousness, rambling, often incoherent lyrics. I don't know how to analyze it, but "fiercely this". It's a touchstone for any music, for me: looking for that same reaction of "fiercely this".
I want to know who exactly did this, on whose instructions, and why right now.
There's a chap who can sometimes be seen driving/riding his C5 around the cycle paths here in Edinburgh. Big thumbs up.
This song was always way better than the other SAW output IMHO. Great song, endearing performance - it's not just audio of <someone> singing it's this video of cheerful Rick singing and bopping around.
Re:Ask HN: Is there a note taking app you're 100% happy with? on Monday December 28, 2020 @02:00PM (#25562051)
Remnote. Previously Zettlr and Markor. My markdown files with their links imported and worked straight away. That, plus the spaced repetition was perfect for me. Also the export to markdown (which does then work in Zettlr) is good. I like the whizziness, similar to Dynalist.
Re:UK to ban sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030: FT on Sunday November 15, 2020 @02:35PM (#25104042)
Yes it will, because the UK is hosting the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2021 at which a lot of vital decisions will be made or ratified.
Re:Ask HN: How do you find new music? on Saturday November 14, 2020 @03:44AM (#25091071)
The most efficient way for me, without making a job out of it, is to rely on BBC Radio 6 Music. Across the station's output, varying by show of course, there is a baked in flow of curated new music, and music new to me. Depends entirely on your preferences of course. For me in terms of novelty some highlights are shows "the freakzone" and by djs mary-anne hobbs and tom ravenscroft. Frankly, the djs do the heavy lifting and pre filter for you. On the whole I find a much higher hit rate that way than being left to my own devices.

Re:Can Machines Be Given Consciousness? on Sunday January 12, 2020 @04:36AM (#22025383)
Probably yes eventually but we are very much on the smallest of the foothills as yet in our understanding or technology. We don't know what we don't know. Multiple worlds within worlds in terms of the interactions between information structures at the levels of society, individuals, sense organs, macro structure of brains, micro structure of brains, DNA within neurons, quantum effects. This whole colossal system looking in itself, we've only just started. As you can tell this topic gets me going.

..they notice that "overhead, without any fuss, the stars were going out."

This might be the most valuable discussion I've ever seen on the internet. So much great information, people reaching out and connecting.
I'm very sorry. "Begin again" could well be the best advice anyone could ever give or receive.
Please do be physically safe if you do swim. Swim with someone, make it short, and read up on cold shock and "after drop".
To echo what was said above, you are not alone.
I'm in Edinburgh too :) The sky is certainly gloomy today! In case of any interest there's a swimming group through which people organise - "the wild ones" on FB. I'm going along to a swim later today and there was another this morning.
What a great article !
Running with people is even better than running alone if it's an option for you. Communities like "Park Run" and "Good Gymn" and no doubt many others multiply the benefits of simply running.
Yes absolutely - cold showering is great in the same ways. There are plenty people out there who do this every day also. Personally I prefer a cold bath to a cold shower as I like the instant hit of more full immersion, but there's not always time for a bath!
I swim in cold water, every day if possible and ideally before work in the morning. This has been a game changer in terms of reducing anxiety, being much better able to cope with difficulties and frankly, making me into a much happier and healthier version of myself. So much so that if I don't get in the cold water for a day or two then I just feel like .. bleurgh. If you've read "Flowers for Algernon" and recall towards the end where (spoiler alert) the main character has come off the drug that makes him much more intelligent and crucially - he can't remember what it was that had happened to him, just that he had a sense of loss from no longer having some <very very good> - that's what this is like. Can't recommend enough. I also use running for the same purpose, but cold water swimming in just a couple of minutes provides a tremendous dose of <good things.> Also it seems to stop me catching colds.
Re:Ask HN: What is your morning ritual? on Monday November 18, 2019 @04:58AM (#21563069)
A (quick, 60 second) swim in the cold sea. You would not believe how good this makes you feel, both immediately and for longer when done consistently. A rare, genuine game changer.
Fantastic post, comments and further links!

" He announced that he had studied the US constitution in detail, and—no doubt, forensically examining its propositions one at a time and perhaps testing it against thought experiments against wild possible futures in which the president was allowed to get out of control—he had discovered how the US could legally be turned into a dictatorship."
