that might be the "Court's job", but that doesn't mean they will be doing their job without extreme personal/political bias that allows them to bend the lens to their liking.

They are 100% reacting to people's wishes, even if CWuestefeld thinks they are not.

> Do you want privacy on your phone?

lol. There is no privacy on your phone if you have Google's spyware on it. So your point is complete bullshit.

> The only solution I can see is buying a burner phone to avoid these situation

Or, you know, stop fucking using google.

Re:Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources on Monday April 25, 2022 @07:43PM (#31162305)
Meh. He's not the only person on Earth pushing for a Mars mission.

> I can bet car manufactured will return to same-old same-old in no time.

I'd bet against you. Not sure if you noticed, but gasoline prices are skyrocketing. This isn't the first time this century and it definitely won't be the last time. EV will happen whether musk autopilots his way into a highway median or not.

> scapegot in one of the political fights and get "cancelled".

Maybe you shouldn't "cancel" your spellcheck.

> He's already said that he'd follow all local laws so it would be interesting to see if he can find the elusive path of maintaining free speech, following the law and not having Twitter being a toxic cesspool used mainly to shout down those not our your "side".

At least in the US, there is no law that says non-government things have to offer "free speech" to customers. Womp womp.

> This is after we had CORPORATE control of twitter (which they apparently applaud)

... they aren't aplauding it. They are offering suggestions now that twitter is under new ownership, since the previous owners were inept. It's likely that musk is equally inept (or worse.)

Re:I'm a scam prevention expert and I got scammed on Thursday March 31, 2022 @05:05PM (#30872197)
As someone why buys a lot of cycling parts online, there are many mom/pop bike shops with web storefronts, that are very reasonably priced and often include "free" shipping. Stop giving bezos your money, you have no excuse.

> I was blown away that Amazon would transfer me to a scammer

You shouldn't be. The amazon store's core business model is allowing scammers to sell garbage to unsuspecting buyers.

Re:Switching to Windows on Thursday February 11, 2021 @11:30AM (#26103512)
All of that 'telemetry' collection isn't free. OS choice definitely matters, some OS vendors will insist on default sevices and 'require' the ability to arbitarily enable more for you as they see fit over time.

You don't own your PC running windows, microsoft does.

The text of the bill hasn't been submitted yet, so we don't know what 'other purposes' is.

So in typical 'hacker' 'news' fashion, this has been upvoted based purely on title alone!

> unpopular opinion - I like daylight savings.

lol. the title is literally about making DST permanent. What's 'unpopular' about that?

Re:Why FSF Endorsing PureOS Matters on Tuesday December 22, 2020 @02:35PM (#25510183)
They mean 'free' as in freedom, not 'free' as in beer. There's a (huge) difference.
They're so focused on privacy, they only tested it on a browser that spews 'telemetry.'
It appears to be another silo for (as the 'owner' put it elsewhere) reducing 'complexity' (i.e. mastadon is too hard because users have to choose an instance). Instead they want you to use their walled garden. It's a bit silly to claim any focus on privacy when you still have to absolutely trust one group of random people on the internet with no option to host it yourself, etc.

I don't feel sorry at all for Microsoft. They have a long history of harassing developers (e.g., [1]. It's nice to see them bear some of that for once.

1. https://www.infoworld.com/article/2676459/microsoft-sues-lin...

The title doesn't mention feelings or thoughts, so I have no idea what you are going on about. OP is correct, this title this title tries to masquerade opinion as fact, and is total misleading clickbait.
Society generally gets more out of research than a bunch of gainfully employed physicists.
Re:How Does Sqlite Work? (2014) on Sunday June 28, 2020 @01:29PM (#23670406)
They didn't say 'all', they said 'many'. So your one example doesn't 'beg to differ' much in the way of OP's point.

> We therefore made the difficult decision to pay some portion of the ransom, approximately $1.14 million, to the individuals behind the malware attack in exchange for a tool to unlock the encrypted data and the return of the data they obtained.

I assume you read that though before you replied, right?

Re:Update on IT Security Incident at UCSF on Saturday June 27, 2020 @01:20AM (#23659693)
It's pretty obvious that the answer is 'no backup'...
> Anger and outrage are valuable, and it's important that we channel them in the right directions.

It's important to channel them in all directions that could have impact. You never know for sure which 'direction' matters to the group you are trying to impart change on.

> If it were that simple,

It is that simple.

> why would we need package managers at all? Sadly, the Linux community as a whole have dedicated themselves to a structure that makes this seemingly simple task remarkably difficult.

Because there's a huge difference between a user downloading/running a binary, and software package management in an OS. The former is not maintainable, your binaries will be out of date soon, etc. But, if you insist on wanting to do this, there's absolutely nothing preventing you from doing it. Have fun.

Break up, and cease to exist.

Just like a cancer! Oh wait...

Re:NPM Is Joining GitHub on Monday March 16, 2020 @04:06PM (#22597007)
title should be "microsoft acquires NPM"
Well, it's a stupid fucking idea, to begin with. If donald wants to throw money at something, he should throw it at the actual problem (implementing a vaccine for the virus, improving the shit health care system in the US, etc). Giving people money that they are too scared to go spend will do nothing, except get support for an election. But hey, donald has no interest in actually governing.
"'hacker' 'news' needs their hourly reminder that people are WFHing"
Good for you. We know the government-sponsored ISP monopolies/duopolies here suck. It's incredibly naive to think that this fact is lost on us.
