Re:Noor: Native Alternative to Slack on Wednesday June 21, 2023 @06:39PM (#36425666)
I'm on a federal dev team that is mandated to use Teams, unfortunately, but this looks great.

I think a big barrier to getting anyone to transition from Slack or anything else to Noor would be trust & security. I'd lean more into what you're doing to that end, up front and center. I could only find a blurb at the bottom of the FAQ, after the mention that the avg age of your team is 23.

Good luck! Congrats on launch.

Love it. My 8 y/o is stoked to use up all of daddy's printer paper on designs :)
This is useful thx.

Feature suggestion: add the ability to toggle `white-space: nowrap` on the post titles. I turned it off in devtools & it still looks pretty good. Could maybe use a px or 2 of vertical margin between titles to better delineate, but not necessary. Or, alternatively, add tooltips.

Nice work.

Parallax, maybe, but no wind = no swirling dust or shifting sands, no?
Re:How Nextdoor courts police and public officials on Thursday May 21, 2020 @11:59AM (#23260046)
Yeah, I steer clear of the Crime & Safety section... I'm strictly on there for important neighborhood announcements, etc.

This is from today, https://imgur.com/T9ILkYE

Some are quick to suggest calling the police, either not realizing or not caring that there's potential for things to escalate, & for someone to lose their life.

Re:Ask HN: What landing page do you love? on Sunday January 05, 2020 @04:39PM (#21964322)
Ha. I don't know Ling but I think I'd like to.
That's a simple analysis to an incredibly complex issue. There are many reasons some black fathers aren't around to raise their kids. Some reasons under their control, many not. The cycle continues until underlying circumstances (societal, penal, etc) are addressed.
Re:Facebook Discovers Fake AI-Generated Profiles on Saturday December 21, 2019 @08:58AM (#21851200)
Easy to say, but people will still do it. And those people vote and affect policies that, in turn, affect you and me.
Can sort by Target to see the (sometimes) multiple synonyms for a particular tag.

This has been my experience, too. I take comfort in it (got a 5 and a 3 y/o)
Re:Show HN: Devlids – Gallery of Stickered Laptops on Monday February 25, 2019 @09:21AM (#19245750)
I like it. Assuming you're tagging them manually as they come in. The tagging is super useful for discovering other devs w/similar interests. https://devlids.com/all/tag:ruby I think it should be highlighted (or at least have some indication that there is tagging somewhere on the landing page). Maybe just list the top tags across the top or something, with a tag-specific page listing all of 'em. Nice work
Re:Show HN: Quickly browse the history of any GitHub file on Friday February 08, 2019 @08:10AM (#19113778)
This is super-slick. Suggestion, scroll to the (top) changed line before the change animation to reveal changes in large files that happened out of viewport. Nice work
Re:Working remotely, 4 years in on Monday February 19, 2018 @02:58PM (#16415264)
You’re being dogmatic. Assuming that something works for everyone because it works for you, and if they say it doesn’t, it’s because they “don’t understand,” is wholly closed-minded.
Re:Working remotely, 4 years in on Monday February 19, 2018 @02:42PM (#16415155)
This is the typical response to pair push-back. And I have no interest in convincing anyone why it is not for me. I will interview.
Re:Working remotely, 4 years in on Monday February 19, 2018 @02:21PM (#16415013)
I’d agree except for the I-will-interrupt-the-next-dude (chick) when I’m finished my story to pair part. Make it known that you’re available to pair if needed, but pairing as SOP would have me interviewing.
Re:Carnival scam science, and how to win [video] on Saturday November 04, 2017 @09:16AM (#15624863)
I've always looked at the carnival game $ as the price for enjoying playing the game. The "prize" is inconsequential.
Re:Jschema.js is a framework for modeling data in JavaScript on Saturday November 04, 2017 @09:00AM (#15624809)
They have a "How to Use" in the README. Needs a "Why to Use" too.
Re:Competitive Self-Play on Wednesday October 11, 2017 @08:58PM (#15454866)
Tangentially, I'm so in love with the site design. Shout out to the UI team.
Re:Introducing Atom-IDE on Wednesday September 13, 2017 @09:45AM (#15238150)
Can you elaborate? We're a Ruby via VSCode team. I fear I'm blissfully ignorant of the possibilities.
Re:What it feels like to be in the zone as a programmer on Sunday August 20, 2017 @08:57AM (#15058223)
I'm a Fed engineer and spent a 4 mo. assignment on an integrated team with Pivotal pairing exclusively. It was a long 4 months for me. There was no "zone." I'm not built for pairing.
Re:Young White America Is Haunted by a Crisis of Despair on Wednesday April 19, 2017 @12:49PM (#14149203)
I think they specify 'White' based on this passage:

"While blacks and Hispanics without college degrees are also falling behind economically and socially, middle-age mortality has worsened for whites in particular over the past 20 years—a fact some attribute partly to social context.

“For whites, their reference group is previous generations of whites,” said Shannon Monnat, a Pennsylvania State University professor who studies the opioid epidemic in rural America. “When they look back on their parents and grandparents, it feels like their generation is doing worse.”"

Re:Let's start using DuckDuckGo more often on Friday December 30, 2016 @01:26PM (#13286079)
I'm a ddg fan. You guys should have a big, conspicuous WHY? button on the homepage that links to all this. The 'Learn More' link takes me to what you guys don't do, which is good, but it's light on the why.
