Re:Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It on Monday October 02, 2023 @11:46AM (#37739641)
I was asked to "find reasons" to get the teams under me back in the office.
A colleague of mine discovered his air monitoring device companion app was uploading to their website along with a map pin on his precise address. He wasn't too happy about that

At my Big Corp (tm) we just let someone go because he offered a service to coach vendors on 1) How to get on our supplier list and 2) our internal criteria for vendor selection. He also charged for the service and as IT Ops head had a great deal of say over how this worked internally.
Re:You can now integrate Google Search on your website on Thursday March 31, 2022 @02:06AM (#30864298)
This.

Lost access to my business on Google infra / services after leaving a positive review on a bakery while on holiday to Paris - for "violating Google Maps policy".

Re:Ask HN: How dangerous is it to trust Google? on Thursday March 31, 2022 @01:37AM (#30864155)
I went on holiday to Paris over two years ago and reviewed a number of places on Google Maps while there. I had a lovely experience and never left a negative review or did anything unusual on Google Maps.

I received an email a day after I got back home from Google saying one of my recent five-star reviews reviews had violated Google Maps policy. My account was disabled and I nearly had a heart attack when I lost access to Google Cloud Platform. I couldn't find a way to find out more or dispute it and ended up moving my business to AWS.

Triple vaxxed and I refuse to work with anyone who is anti-vax or anti-mandate or anti-science.

You shouldn't be allowed to buy food or leave your bedroom until you're fully vaxxed.

At my Big Corp (tm) we've had HCL and TCM send one candidate for interview and drop off different people entirely. HR caught on when HCL started dropping off men when we had specifically selected several women.

A big part of why I felt unwelcome was their unwavering commitment to American political activism. I don't live there. Why do I need to hear about some countries politics in my favorite programming language.
Re:Oracle Cloud is unreachable on Thursday March 11, 2021 @01:42AM (#26421019)
I can second this.

We had a database growing by around 200GB of relevant data per month. While I'm not a fan of Oracle having worked there long ago, that database was unbelievably fast. They moved to MySQL years later and it required a much much bigger tin after being heavily optimized.

Re:Gab has been hacked and 70GB of data leaked on Tuesday March 02, 2021 @12:36AM (#26312205)
As a South African all of this is fascinating. Especially the shift of where the "center" is.

It seemed every American not on the left is called "far right" from where I am sitting.

Half a dozen of my friends have moved to the States and a few have scolded me for my understanding saying that plenty of centrists are labeled far right.

I'm beginning to glaze over the label now. It doesn't hold any sway for me because it is used so flippantly.

Re:How prepared are we for the next giant solar flare? on Friday February 26, 2021 @12:31PM (#26277362)
I have quite the adblocking setup for my network and browser. Every now and then I get a glimpse of what the bulk of humanity has to endure on websites. I can't believe the difference. Those of us who enjoy an ad free Internet experience a completely different Internet lifestyle.

Wouldn't Google censor the effort in it's news feed and search results?

Re:Why Go? on Thursday March 07, 2019 @05:35AM (#19326992)
Not only tiny on disk (startup time, pulling etc) but also tiny memory footprint. I'm comparing to a Java Spring app and Golang is absurdly light on memory.
Re:Client did not pay? on Wednesday February 06, 2019 @01:58AM (#19093273)
As someone who works for a large asset finance company I can tell you that the plan is to ensure a car with missed payments cannot be started.

We do offer payment holidays and finance restructuring as to those that miss a payment.

Quotas have been a disaster in my country. Instead of hiring the best people so that we can compete better we've had to optimize for this variable q and often those seats have been kept empty as we haven't found that special person.
Re:Ask HN: Bias in flagging stories? on Monday August 20, 2018 @07:14AM (#17799038)
It has been flagged again
Agreed.

> U.S. intelligence officers were also able to identify digital links between the covert communications system and the U.S. government itself, according to one former official—links the Chinese agencies almost certainly found as well. These digital links would have made it relatively easy for China to deduce that the covert communications system was being used by the CIA. In fact, some of these links pointed back to parts of the CIA’s own website, according to the former official.

How was this approved? This is such an obvious no-no. Would have expected a completely standalone, ring-fenced platform with absolutely no relationship to the government's known IP addresses and domains?

Re:The everyday sexism that I see in my work on Friday June 22, 2018 @04:13AM (#17372344)
I've had to do the same with suppliers and software vendors. A quick one-on-one with the "tech person" has often been far more informative & accurate than anything I've heard from the execs or senior managers.

Re:Show HN: Servers.lol – Should Your EC2 Be a Lambda? on Thursday December 14, 2017 @04:04PM (#15927027)
Perhaps you could factor in something about cold-start?

I know that in my context, this has been a key issue. Another odd one is that our organization has only certified RHEL and Cent OS running server-side code.

Well, all we need to do is check which cost center paid for the implementation. If it was Sales & Marketing, we have our answer ;)
Re:Ask HN: Huge enterprise customer wants to see our source code on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @03:55PM (#15864899)
It's funny seeing this. I work in one of those big corporates and maybe I can share a little about how they work. From what I've seen this could be completely normal or a huge red flag.

We recently looked at partnering with an analytics company for a credit scoring solution. The idea was to use their SaaS and have a contract in place regarding use, pricing, up-time etc (Corporates will want that). When we kicked off the procurement process internally an army of people got involved. Their was a project manager, a number of lawyers. I believe their were audit and compliance people their too. They ended up creating a project just to figure out what needed to be figured out. Here's where it get's helpful. We couldn't even share what we needed to know with the SaaS team or product owner because that could compromise the investigation. In this case, the corporate's concerns were genuine, numerous and required rigorous answers.

In another case I watched an exec try to figure out how a KYC solution provider has achieved the level of accuracy in identifying ad-hoc documents in the hope of solving the problem with internal resources.

If I were you I would not send them your code. Rather say would not be closed to them asking questions and you answering by showing code as long as it's not the secret-sauce.

Just know that for our scoring problem we actually had to see how the decision was being made because we're subject to a ton of legislation around that.
