Sure but at least radiologists do something. What do hospital administrators do? Like a university a hospital has bureaucracy that grows.
Humans are much better at inferring rules from examples than at deducing an example from a concisely stated rule. The official python docs are the latter.

Kinda sounds like you are him. Is this forum better or worse with your product placement tricks?
Re:Preview, the Mac app people forget about on Sunday May 22, 2022 @07:20PM (#31473786)
Unfortunately although Preview is good for these tricks, such as editing a PDF or creating a PDF from multiple inputs, I often find that the official acrobat reader from Adobe will refuse to display the resulting file. That may be Adobe trying old Microsoft “you can’t keep up with my definition of a legal file format” tricks. Nevertheless what you produce cannot be viewed with a significant fraction of PDF readers.

Re:Rejected internal job applicants are twice as likely to quit on Friday September 03, 2021 @07:00PM (#28410393)
That’s a great point. I have seen secretaries take training after hours to get certificates and degrees. When finished they apply locally and perform well, since they already had an idea what the job is. Some employees who have known the person in the old role find it hard to treat the colleague equitably. In that situation sometimes the best way forward is to take the new credential to a place where no one knew you before you got it.

I might add, Apple could kill the market for stolen iPhones (by preventing a phone from working when they get a bona ride police report) but they don’t.
New idea for a t-shirt. “Baltimore: Trump hates it.”
I would add that there are financial technical jobs at T Rowe Price, Legg Mason, Morgan Stanley etc. Not to mention that there are computer security jobs at those places where the stakes are high.
Re:Why we should end the data economy on Friday June 04, 2021 @10:55PM (#27401657)
The basic problem is that people undervalue data about themselves. They don’t imagine the kinds of conclusions that can be made, or the consequences.

It’s been more than a decade, but I was impressed by this research from Allessandro Acquisti that suggested people valued their data only in the pennies.

Re:Done Answering Questions Stack Overflow on Friday February 19, 2021 @02:28PM (#26196976)
I have never enjoyed python’s official documentation. It isn’t easy to find answers. Sometimes the value of an SO answer is that you are sent to exactly the right part of the python docs.
Re:Firefox Was Always Enough on Wednesday December 16, 2020 @09:42PM (#25451757)
Firefox won’t display iCloud.com for me. Of course safari will.

I couldn’t determine why; I have customized perhaps a dozen variables within Firefox so it is hard to know wether iCloud depends on any of them.

An alternative to the total transparency you call for might be that an auditor examines everyone’s compensation, and provides statistics for each job role. Lots of employees prefer not to have their exact compensation revealed. Sometimes you may work well with someone (a lawyer, say) and think him a good team player, until you realize he is making tons more than you and envy becomes a factor. Your attitude might go from positive to negative. Would salary transparency be good in that case?

Re:Make educated wireless router/AP upgrade decisions on Wednesday July 01, 2020 @12:43AM (#23697813)
I also like ddwrt. But I didn’t see it mentioned in the long article, which is mostly about the wireless channel. Can you recommend a recent router (or brand) that supports ddwrt?

Re:Most(ly dead) Influential Programming Languages on Saturday March 28, 2020 @12:52AM (#22709290)
One thing I credit COBOL with is the use of descriptive variable naming. In FORTRAN you see variables named i, j, x etc (just look at Numerical Recipes) but in COBOL you see TOTAL_MONTH_SALES and the like. It is considered good style and “self-documenting” to do that today.
My favorite apple deceptive practice: allowing you to think you have disabled Bluetooth, when all you have disabled is Your Own ability to use it. Merchant partners of apple can use it to finely track you.
