Ask HN: How do apps get into Apple App Store pretending something they are not?

Being a bit into the adult industry, I sometimes see some kind of "creative" ways developers/publishers use to push their adult-oriented apps and services into Apple app store for iOS, and this is something that seems to happen quite regularly. For example, just today I saw a commercial on YouTube of an app, which clearly said "1 on 1 chat, have fun, let's do it together, blah blah blah". The ad...

Nice about holding both volume buttons and power one! However, you need to foresee the situation where you can get in trouble, right? If you just walk along the street in a big city, you probably should do this just before you leave your home?
But what if the bad guys "just" ask you not to close your eyes persuasively enough?

Ask HN: How iPhone saves you from being forced to unlock with face ID?

I wonder if there are means to save you from being forced to show your face to iPhone to unlock any of its services if bad guys catch you and tell you to do so?My bank app, messenger apps, photos, browser and many more are Face ID enabled. I know I can turn this off, but I don't see any advise about this case where I can be forced to show my face in front of my iPhone to access my personal...

But, how do random video chats deal with this? I can click agree button even if I am under 18, nothing can stop me, and I don't go through verification process, so in theory the site can be easily abused. I know there is "Report" button usually, but is that the main way of detecting this kind of misuse behaviour for the site operators? What if nobody never clicks "Report" button even if there is illegal action happening?

To broaden the discussion, when I use Telegram or Whatsapp, I don't go through any verification process and again, anyone can show anything to anyone. Whose responsibility and liability is to detect such things and what consequences can be?

Ask HN: How do adult-streaming platforms differ from random video chat ones?

I have an idea of building a random video chat webapp, similar to omegle, chatroulette, coomeet and so on. I assume it can be used for streaming adult content live, the very same way as what webcam sites do, but in a more informal way - a model on one side, a viewer on the other side, just a private p2p video call. An extra layer is bidirectional donations via crypto. Model and viewer can swap...

Ask HN: How to better implement a deposit/withdrawal tracking system?

Assume I am creating a webapp which can receive money from the users to their "accounts" in my system and send them out, something like a super simplified version of a bank. Are there any guides, practices to make it safe and properly? I see multiple ways of doing the same thing. For example, when a user puts in $10, then $3 then $7, then moves out $4, I can use a table in the database called...

Ask HN: Can I make my whole web service completely transparent?

Say, I am building a service which I want to gain natural 100% trust from anyone who uses it or for any reason is skeptical about it.As a parallel example, I as a user can 100% trust, e.g. lodash library to use in my projects. It's open-source, popular, traceable by the large community and there is literally no place for any backdoor, hidden tracking and so on.So, what if I want my service with...

Re:Namecheap extends termination for customers from Russia on Tuesday March 01, 2022 @11:14AM (#30515964)
There is no sign they won't do something like what they did in the future when the situation changes. So probably it's safer to move to a different registrar you trust more.

Once you stop being or showing signs of being "anti-regime" by any means, you are at risk again.

And, using the service for business, do you really want to spend time understanding today's agenda for this or that company giving you this service?

I wanted to try some new service after using one of them for years, just to see how things can work with a different registrar. I registered a domain 2 weeks ago with Namecheap and now I cannot easily transfer it to another registrar because there is a technical limitation when you have to wait for at least 60 days after first registration before you can transfer it.

I tried to transfer and failed so I had to contact Namecheap support to get an advice how to be in the situation of the limited time I have before 22nd of March.

Ask HN: Where is the border between allowed and disallowed in Apple appstore?

I was thinking about building an app for adult p2p video calls with random people similar to chatroulette but with its own unique (as I hope) features.I was absolutely sure the app I'd have built could never be approved in App Store because they don't allow adult-content oriented apps to be published. So, that's fine, I knew it from the start so I started building a webapp optimized for mobile...

Does a set of Redux, React and some other commonly used libraries tend to degrade in performance drastically when a number of actions, amount of data going through rises significantly?

Ask HN: Is using Redux or React making a large app slow?

I know the title can sound clickbaity, but I have a personal practical question born from my observations. As an independent developer I a build frontend applications for my clients. I have a set of tools, one of which is [1] Redux DevTools extension for Chrome. Its window is often open while I am working. What I noticed is some major large webapps keep it enabled in production what makes me think...

Ask HN: What to do with a contract restriction to not work with a competitor?

Being a citizen of Russia I am currently working for a company on Cyprus as a developer. I never wanted to stay and work here for a long period of time, the plan was to work a year or year and a half then take a pause and plan my further activity as I am more into creating my own consulting business or running one of my ideas as a startup. To add to the unwilling to stay long here, now I find...

Last autumn I was involved in working on a similar web app [1] for WorldBank which consumed its data sources.

I think it should be more accurate as they at WorldBank collect the data from multiple sources and process it in a scientifically precise manner. You can enter country you live in, which can make a dramatic difference.

Ask HN: Should I open-source my free iOS app when I publish it in the App Store?

I am working on a free app that I am going to publish on App Store, as my first attempt to get to the iOS apps market. It's going to be a better (in my dreams and hopes) version of an existing app. Put simple, it will be a messaging app.I wonder if it will have more cons or pros, which is surely debatable, if I open-source it and all its new versions while I am working on further improvements....

Ask HN: Where can my IT-related articles be proofread and fact-checked?

I am going to begin writing articles to share my knowledge and demonstrate the expertise on my portfolio site as a frontend developer. I am not a native English speaker so my word can sound boring and dry, probably too formal in some cases or even just simply ugly. More than that, I would be happy to have someone from my domain who can read my articles, edit them, find erroneous facts or even...

Re:Ask HN: Should I go to Sweden for work? on Monday October 21, 2013 @04:28AM (#6584118)
What the guy in charge for money said was something around $4-$5k per month before taxes which seems quite low to me.

Ask HN: Should I go to Sweden for work?

I have been freelancing from home in Moscow, Russia for 4 years now as a frontend developer and as a self-taught UI/UX specialist. There were good and bad times in regard to work/life balance, money, clients and myself. I am not a famous rockstar freelancer, but during recent 2 years I have been earning $7-$10k per month average, making my clients quite happy and being able to support my wife...
