Here at Notable, we're building a robotic platform to fight cancer, one patient at a time. Our translational drug discovery platform identifies treatment options for relapsed and refractory cancer patients -- starting with Acute Myeloid Leukemia-- to address the long tail of cancer treatment.

Fullstack engineer

Help build out the stack powering our robotic lab. You'd join as the third engineer and would own the frontend dashboards and related API's.

The day to day work would involve designing web apps with the science team for use in the lab and then building out the frontend code and backend API's. Beyond the core infrastructure, you'd have the freedom to explore new areas where we need help such as machine learning, robotic automation, and data visualization. Experience with Ruby/Python, Angular/Backbone/React, Grunt/Gulp, API design a plus.

Data Scientist

Use machine learning to help us decide which drug combinations to test for a patient. Even with automation, we're only able to test less than 5% of the combination space. You would work with the science team to design the features and then would work with the engineering team to put the model into production. Experience with bioinformatics, machine learning, Python, R, API design, and nosql products a plus.

I'd take this further and add that you should always be doing something wrong in the pursuit of more than just code. As a novice programmer you can spin your wheels learning every best practice without building much of anything. And HN often compounds this problem - look at every 'You're doing it wrong ...' post. Instead, I think you should make something crappy and make the rookie mistakes. Overtime, simply look to improve bit by bit.

I imagine someone will protest this idea, saying that there's already enough crappy software out there, that the world doesn't need any more technical debt. But this fails to realize that technical debt is a good thing in someways- it's a by-product of learning and crashing through boundaries.

In a way, technical debt is analogous to carbon emissions- yes, by itself it's a bad thing. But in the larger scope, carbon emissions are a by-product of industrialization, a process which has vastly improved our quality of life. Technical debt, like carbon emissions, is a sign of progress.

This article came across as offensive. Honestly if a company is actively classifying people as losers, it's not really the type of company I'd like to work at. A better hiring policy might be 'hire amazing people' and then look for the amazing in people. This approach is so negative and off-putting.

Creating a more appealing activity for girls seems like a good step. An even better step might be trying to fix perceptions regarding the engineering centric activities out there for kids (lego mindstorms, fort building, etc).

Right now this solution feels like similar solutions being pursued in computer engineering to fix the gender imbalance- namely creating girls-only coding groups. This is good in some ways, but I feel like it breeds two standards (with the female standard being weaker). For me, the best type of progress is girls working alongside the boys, with both happy and comfortable.

I agree, this entire article is a waste of time. How can you draw any kind of blanket conclusions from such a contrived experiment? At the very least talk to some actual businesses and see what their opinions are.

Excellent critique. I feel that HN often blows by rational ignorance with some of it's advice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rational_ignorance). Sometimes it's best to do it wrong and actually do something, rather than hopping around per someone else's dogma and never actually making anything.

But I think it's also possible that the HN frontpage simply doesn't give a good impression of the average hacker. The average hacker is not welding together the latest js frameworks while tying it all together with node.js and hadoop. Perhaps more articles on "common man" hackers could be beneficial, or at least give some perspective.

My co-founder and I are hopping among different start-up hubs in the US to get a feel for this sort of thing. So far, Boulder has been the most dense (though it's small in size- ~ pop 100,000). And Austin seems to be one of the most active (not as dense, but a larger population overall- so a larger critical tech mass). Austin feels like it poised to be a giant.

Yes, but including a lot of unexperienced investors actually increases the risk of failure. The distraction alone (in time spent managing these investors) might be the death of any startup. Imagine trying to deal with hundreds of mini-vc's all day. Pg's right in the sense that a startup needs just a few focused, knowledgable investors early on.

Something like Kiva might work for a startup, but perhaps more in a donation bootstrap sense. Not as a serious investment.

A better summary is needed. I quit out when the beginning ad-speak didn't wrap up in 2 minutes.

Yeah, providing services can often feel a bit fruitless, mostly because scaling services are a lot harder than scaling a simple product. I'd advise you to at least focus in on a niche/market when providing your services. That way, you'll eventually have domain expertise that you can roll into a scalable product.

I wonder how this shortage will be solved. There's some cool solutions coming out in response to the dev shortage- for example, CodeYear. Perhaps similar resources will emerge for training future designers?

But I'm not sure how effective similar online programs would be. From my experience, teaching/learning design can be a lot more frustrating than teaching/learning code. Perhaps it's because design gets a lot more subjective at the advanced levels.

Looks interesting, congrats on getting a product out. A bit of design advice- stick to 2 font styles on the frontpage. The 4 current styles are too much to process and take away from your message.

Good article to a very common problem. The only thing I'd add- use CSS when possible instead of an image. I often see low resolution shapes as images (like rounded buttons for example) that could easily just have been done in CSS- which look great on any resolution and all modern browsers.

I agree with ig1, a past work record is the best predictor (and I imagine evidence of past success is far more important for any hackernews reader than any paper degree).

Be upfront with what roles you've played. Having to ask for further clarification just makes it seem like you've got something to hide. Good luck!

Honestly, it sounds like you really need to decide what you want- do you want to launch an internet startup or do you want to continue as a professional oral surgeon?

If you choose to take your money and launch your own general internet startup (ie a "Dropbox"), I suggest you quit your MD tomorrow. Treating an start-up as a side project (and a side skill) is a bad idea. After all, your competitors are spending 100% of their time on their competing start-up.

That said, you do have domain expertise in oral surgery- try and leverage that domain expertise. Use your unique blend of skills to your advantage.
