could you add some context for why you think it's poor?
Could you explain which antipatterns you're referring to?
Re:What Your Sleep Tracker Gets Wrong About Sleep on Thursday April 10, 2025 @11:07PM (#43650127)
This would be a godsend to if it works in a non-clinical setting!

I always wake up after 3-5 hours of sleep, and I usually can't get back to sleep during the night. According to Fitbit sleep monitoring even in those few hours, I don't get much deep sleep. Needless to say I am very fatigued during the day. If it wasn't for sleep medication I would be a complete wreck.

Actually I think the vibe coding process does make you think about the requirements. When the LLM writes some code, and you run it, you see what's missing. Maybe this only works well for simple systems, not complex ones.

Re:Show HN: Lessons learned from a big OCR project on Tuesday December 17, 2024 @12:15PM (#42443131)
Getting the footnotes right is going to be really tricky. Sometimes I couldn't even read the superscript numbering on the original scans. And that was after zooming in to the max.

Reliably identifying the superscript locations should be enough since they are in the same order as the footnotes.

It's a little early for feature requests... but I would love to see an EPUB edition! It shouldn't be too hard once done with the hard work of getting the data structured structured.

My Dad was a university professor in mathematics. He loved his field! But the math department he worked in was taken over by someone who loved playing politics and maintaining power by playing favorites. My Dad refused to kiss the ring, and paid the price for that in his career advancement. He had tenure so it was never as bad as what happened to Marshal Brain.

Now we have n == 2, this could be a pattern. Of course it's a similar situation outside of academia too.

Re:An Algorithmic Solution to Insomnia on Friday May 31, 2024 @06:19PM (#40540923)
My problem is that I wake up in the middle of the night after 3-4 hours. Vaping one puff of indica cannabis puts me back to sleep until the morning. And even if I don't go back to sleep right away I'm feeling so good that I don't mind.

Apparently it's genetic. My genome has 100% correlation with genetic variants associated with insomnia.

When the battery is full where does the power produced by the panels go?
I'm not an expert; but I don't see solar as being an option for cargo ships.

Using wind power on the other hand seems like a better fit in this case.

Yes and it will take decades to replace the millions of fuel burning fuel machines that exist. I have a 5 year old gasoline car that I don't drive much. From an EROI (Energy Return on Investment) perspective I wouldn't be helping by replacing it with an EV any time soon.

I was interested in the Android positions mentioned above; but I didn't see them on the website. Have they been removed? Or should I apply to the Senior or Staff SW engineer positions?
Do you have a source for this information?

This is what I found "In 2020, France exported a total of nearly 78 terawatt hours of electricity. Meanwhile, electricity imports to France amounted to nearly 35 terawatt hours in total that year."

Re:Why isn't there a universal data format for résumés? on Sunday January 16, 2022 @04:55PM (#29960591)
I don't think it's used very much but there is this one http://xml.coverpages.org/HR-XML-ResumeSpecification200205.h...

This page mentions a few more formats: http://microformats.org/wiki/resume-formats

It seems like the problem isn't a lack of standards, but rather a lack of adoption and/or agreement on which standard to follow

When the vaccines were first tested and approved they reduced the risk of infection by 20 times!

Of course that no longer is true because the virus has mutated under selective pressure.

I hope we'll be better prepared next time. Something like a worldwide simultaneous vaccine campaign, instead of disorganized every country for themselves approach we've seen so far.

Re:Portable replacement for a $60k VO2 Max machine on Saturday January 15, 2022 @05:35PM (#29951111)
I work on a handheld ultrasound device that attached to a phone or a tablet. It is much easier to use than traditional ultrasound machines, because of the attention paid to the UX off the app, and the familiar smartphone UI.

That being said I will haven't learned how to use it in a meaningful way myself. Getting a good image, and then interpreting the 2d video stream requires training!

Making ultrasound easy enough for non specialists to use will require an AI that guides the user and interprets the images. I'm not convinced skipping FDA approval would be a good idea in this case.

I used the triple-foot pedal for about 1.5 years. I now have chronic discomfort in my left foot; the one I used for the foot pedal. Of course it might be a coincidence, or it could be a RSI from using the foot pedal.
Re:Ask HN: Effects of Covid Vaccination on R0? on Friday December 03, 2021 @08:32PM (#29437799)
Yes I agree with you. I wish I could find a study that clearly shows that unvaccinated people are more likely to transmit the disease than vaccinated people.

There are studies, but the ones I have found compare only people are infected. And when you have COVID you're contagious, vaccinated or not. This is then used as a basis for claiming: "See vaccinated are just as, or even more, contagious as unvaccinated!". That's what I'm trying to disprove.

Example of what I have found: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3...

Re:Ask HN: Effects of Covid Vaccination on R0? on Friday December 03, 2021 @08:24PM (#29437759)
The person I'm talking with is young, healthy, and believes he is at very low risk of a serious case of COVID.

For society in general, the crux of his argument comes down to:

"Unvaccinated people are just as contagious as vaccinated, so why should I get vaccinated?"

I'm finding it surprisingly difficult to find unassailable evidence that vaccinated people are less likely to pass the virus on to someone else.

Ask HN: Effects of Covid Vaccination on R0?

I searched for medical studies on how vaccination affects the spread of COVID-19 (aka R0). But it has been surprisingly hard to find good information!I'm having a discussion about vaccination with a family member, and I'd like to have some evidence that I can show them.

Re:Ask HN: How can I continue working as long as possible? on Saturday November 20, 2021 @02:42PM (#29291215)
On general, figuring out a good ergonomic setup makes a huge difference. In particular for eye strain, having "computer glasses", and a large monitor, have solved it for me.

I'm 60, and also a software developer. Are you still working full time as an employee?
Re:Todo apps are meant for robots on Sunday August 01, 2021 @07:27PM (#28031229)
I use a Todo app every day, starting in the morning. Almost all of my tasks are recurring, well defined, and relatively short. E.g. "triage email inbox every day", "vacuum house every week on Saturday", "upper body workout every second day", "renew passport every 10 years".

For me this works well, because: * I don't forget to get things done * I don't have to think about what I need to do, the app shows me a daily list * I get a small feeling of accomplishment for every task I complete (gamificaion), and for finishing all my tasks (daily task inbox zero).

It works for me.

This study of Novamin concludes:

> Review shows that Novamin has significantly less clinical evidence to prove its effectiveness as a remineralization agent in treating both carious and non-carious lesion. Hence, better designed clinical trials should be carried out in the future before definitive recommendations can be made.
