Re:Understanding Email Encryption (2025) on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:40AM (#50336681)
This is an incredibly overconfident statement, given that no one can definitively prove WhatsApp or production consumer builds of Signal actually encrypt anything (note: this is unrelated to Signal builds compiled by users themselves).

With the massive improvements to AI, it'd be pretty trivial to decompile Signal and compare against the source, or have it reverse engineer WhatsApp to see if there's some kind of backdoor.

Been using fastmail since 2013 and before that hosting my own for about 15 years. I feel fastmail does a lot of things right, for example one near and dear to my heart is proper alias handling in the webmail interface. I think my only complaint is that they rolled out IMAP compatible 'notes/memo' for emails, but you can't use it unless you use the grouped conversation thingy which I don't like.

Also I get the vibe that the company treats their employees properly and not like disposable trash.

Though I'd be curious how they're using AI.

How brave of you to defend your CEO's incompetence.

Rex is cool, but I feel gimped because all the cool stuff happens over Tailscale but it doesn't support headscale.

Does `sysctl -w net.mptcp.enabled=0` work?
Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:46AM (#50289971)
But it's not really useful until it has critical mass at say 80 or 90%.

I hope there is a way to reset the toner level/page count detection as that would let me refill the new toners which are chipped.

The independent researcher who published a proof of concept before the release did not.

Just to clarify that no actual PoC was published, just a demonstration video was floating about.

I'm sure we'll make a fuss about this today, but we won't hear about this project again for at least 10 years.
Re:Tangled.org ongoing outage (>= 7 hours) due to AT protocol on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @10:16PM (#50283766)
AT protocol? Likes Hayes compatible AT commands?
When a significant portion of devices are patched (including gui apps on mac), pulling off an MITM without detection is pretty much impossible. That would be usual culprits of telco, ISP, or public wifi. That's what I mean by the window has closed. Anyone attempting is taking significant risk of being detected; at least in my neck of the woods would be illegal to do as well.
Yeah also got to be lucky that the users are using https and not ssh. You're very limited in what you can mitm, you'll be trivially detected by patched devices (though maybe not acted on because nobody is the wiser), but then you'll need to serve objects with common/conflicting hashes -- fixing up that state synchronisation (what you call "correct") to then do nefarious things is not trivial at all. Extremely difficult to pull off successfully for git anyways or to do it in stealth.
Doesn't affect app bundles though, only *nix commands. This'd be detected pretty quickly, at least by the significant portion of patched devices.
The window of opportunity to MITM has passed. If you attempted an MITM from an easy vantage such as telco, ISP, or public wifi you'd be trivially detected as a significant portion of devices are patched, including on these unpatched macs as only the *nix commands are affected and not app bundles.
Not really a big deal, the window to do an MITM has passed.
What happened to the Metaverse?
Re:Ghostty 1.4.0 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:24PM (#50264416)
I don't know about the others as I used Terminal.app on mac since Panther, but Ghostty has been a pretty good upgrade, at first offering 24-bit colour which Terminal.app didn't have at the time of its release. I also like the shell integration such as easy selection of command output. I don't ask much from a terminal as evidenced by using Terminal.app for almost 2 decades, but Ghostty has not once been an issue and is 'invisible' to me.
Re:A 2^O(n) Time Algorithm for 3-SAT on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:45AM (#50261041)
Is it 2^O(n) or 2^o(n)? (Edit: It's the latter according to the site, HN possibly mangled the title.)
Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:30AM (#50259001)
Yeah. I love my 16" almost max specced out, but for travel I wanted something lighter and compact so I got a 13" m5 mba.

Love both.

Can't see the article because of paywall.

Why are jobs on the line in the first place, is this some kind of layoff?

Re:UK to charge universities $1,200 per international student on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:31AM (#50255697)
Nobody wants those jobs because they're illegally paying below award wage and the work conditions are substandard. Domiciled Australians (rightfully) expect fair wage and decent working conditions.
I'm doing law school through an unconventional program called LPAB. You have to complete 20 subjects, each with a 20% assessment and an 80% exam, with only a 3 hr lecture every week and that's it. You don't really get a chance to ask questions and there's no tutorials or handholding.

While the assessment can be gamed, you must overcome the exam which are written and reviewed outside of the university, so the lecturer doesn't know what is on the exam, and the questions and exam papers are never returned.

Doing this I remember my undergrad and masters felt like I was coddled as there was a bunch of fluff grades in doing assignments and just turning up to class. The grade inflation was a farce as well.

There is research on actual Internet censorship, worth following the ARMOR IRTF group.

I'm sorry but the twitter link is the best I could find, hopefully it is viewable without login. I don't know of any workaround sites like nitter/xcancel that is in operation.
Really cool but disappointed that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra_Deep_Space_Communicat... wasn't in my vicinity when it's about a 15 min drive away.

Edit: Looks like it doesn't show up on wikipedia nearby either.
